Dulac chat regarding Tomlin

Yup. Steeler fans are spoiled. They expect to go to the playoffs with a HOF QB, one of the best WRs in the league, one of the best OLs and a defense filled with high draft picks. Stupid fans. Only great teams like the Ravens make the playoffs.

How did they miss the playoffs with a NFL-high 8 Pro Bowlers in a Division with Tyrod Taylor/Baker Mayfield, Lamar Jackson's Single Wing, and Jeff Driskell?

Normally, that gets coaches fired.

That's the real story that has been obfuscated by Operation Scapegoat.

Same old, same old. I'm pretty darn tired of it, really.

It was totally the idiot kickers fault. At least that was what CMT was selling.

That and the LB's coaches fault as well..............DEFINATELY NOT the ST coach as he was ranked 27th overall in the NFL and why would that not be good enough............?????

Although all that said, I look for this year to be W-A-Y better in terms of "D" & coaching. Our offense will be above the line as in good quality once again.

Salute the nation

MT when his kicker is money: 13-3
MT when his kicker sucks: 9-6-1 and no playoffs
Obviously.

Looking back on that 13-3, IIR they didn't have a west coast trip and had close road games in Detroit and Indy where they squeaked by against bottom feeders. The MTS loss to the Bears was as far west as they had to go that year.

It was set up for them like no other year with Bortles only putting 10 points on the Bills at home in the WC Round.

That's kind of my point, MT doesn't put teams away. As I recall, in 2017 Boz won 4 games on the last play or in the last minute with a FG. At 13-3 they won a number of close games, at 9-6-1 they lost a number of close games. When they get to the playoffs where everyone is pretty good then MT is usually one-and-done.

What's that old adage in relationships? Something like "when someone tells you who they are, pay attention or believe them?"

Knowing what we all know now, we'd cringe going back in time and hearing "not looking for style points" and "we don't apologize for it" for the very first time.

dont forget the second best HC in the NFL(one that cant be replaced with someone that would do better)

Pretty on point IMO.

Rahn: Hi Gerry, Maybe it's me but I've found that Mike Tomlin's become much more unlikable in recent years, which is a shame. His handling of the superegos on the squad is one thing, but how he bristles (to put it nicely) when asked about such instances and shirks responsibility when he demands it from his players. Never mind that he never admits to making a mistake. What's your take on how he's viewed?
Gerry Dulac: I don't think it's you. Your perception is most adroit.

thad5192: why extend tomlin,5 playoff wins in the last 10 years,a locker run by children ,underachieving as an artform ,no one better is not an answer
Gerry Dulac: There is absolutely no harm in waiting another year and holding him, along with everyone else, accountable for the way the past two seasons have ended. Now is not the time to be handing out raises of at least $2 million a year. Now is the time to have everyone, including the coach, show they can turn this around.

Coach Mike T.: Specifically name one thing I do well as a head coach. I don't develop secondary players, as a former DB coach should be able to do. I don't have good clock or game management skills. I constantly look like a deer in headlights on the sideline. I have been riding Ben's coattails my entire coaching career. What do I do well besides give out good fist and chest bumps?
Gerry Dulac: Sound bites?

Stiller fan: More pressure this season; Ben, Tomlin, Juju, or Bush?
Gerry Dulac: Tomlin

this is encouraging because it shows that Tomlin is clearly on the hot seat. He knows it now. The extension is irrelevant. It doesn't count against salary cap so it's just some cash for the rooneys. If this season goes south, the extension won't save Tomlin.

The Rooneys knew Tomlin was not ready to be a HC when he was hired. That seems obvious because part of him taking the job was that he kept the staff pretty much intact. That the proof the Rooneys knew Tomlin needed some training wheels and with such an experienced staff, he got it.

The problem is that as the training wheels came off and the team was more Tomlin's, it starting coming loose. Let's face it, the team he inherited pretty much ran itself for the first few seasons. Team leaders like Polamalu, Keisel, and Farrior kept the locker room in order.

But as those guys left, the "young money" type guys took over and Tomlin appeared to like that kind of attitude. We see now how he encouraged bad behavior by never correcting it. He even rewarded it by giving special favors like letting AB stay in a B&B during training camp.

The positive is that Tomlin knows he's out of excuses. Maybe this will force him to change and to realize the value of discipline. I mean actual discipline, not press conference promises.

The worst trait of Tomlin is that he never seems to learn from mistakes. If the steelers won, then there were no mistakes. That's Tomlin's attitude. Time and again, Ben would pull off some last minute drive and win a game they should have lost because they played like **** for half the game.

When reporters actually questioned Tomlin on bad decisions, he'd basically shut them down by saying "We won, so it doesn't matter." That's just stupid.

What is important is if Tomlin can finally see his style has not worked and he comes into this season willing and able to make the coaching decisions to make this team better

Tomlin is like tofu and draws his flavor from the essence and potency of the surrounding ingredients. His coaching isn't going to give the dish a distinctive flavor other than seasoning it with sloppiness that the rest of the ingredients must overcome.

That's funny, pretty much. But you get a nugget or two still from some of the old guard, which is still worth logging on in my opinion.

When did we ever have Blackledge?

He is who he is; he's not going to change much.

Rooney II needs to make a change to better the team.

Tomlin is stubborn. He declined help via a timeouts coach and remains terrible like 0 for his last 9 on red flags.

I cringe during his halftime interviews when questioned about sluggish performances and he invariably says, "you know..it's not really about them or anything they're doing, it's about us."

I know. Has Tomlin ever accepted blame? It seems like Ben can. I’ve never seen the head coach do it, and in theory he’s the leader.

Enough “ we “ how about “I “ for once?

Keep or fire Tomlin under these circumstances

The Tomlin debate seems never-ending.

About 1/3 of the poster want him gone and have their reasons. I'm in this camp, and quick reasons as to why are 3-6 in his last nine playoff games. Tomlin had epic collapse after a 7-2-1 start not to make the playoffs. Only three other teams have done this, and two lost their QB for the year. Poor use of time outs. The inability to handle diva players and police social media. A lack of in-game adjustments. A lousy red flag challenge percentage, and sticking with the special team's coach and Chris Boswell.

About 1/3 of the posters defended him at all costs, hopefully not for social reasons. This is 2019; we should be beyond that. They point out that Tomlin has never had a losing season. Neither has Ben. The but super bowl ring won long ago with the former head coaches players and roster in-tact.

Then there are 1/3 of the posters who are in the middle of the road.

Let's assume the following happens. The Steelers do not win the division and miss the playoffs with a 9-7 to 7-9 type of record in 2019. Tomlin's contract expires in 2020. Would you want him back is we missed the playoffs for two seasons in a row, and have gone 3-6 in our last nine playoff attempts?

No poll, reply to which answer under these circumstances you agree with the most.

Choice 1. No extension for Tomlin once the contract expires. Tomlin does not get a new deal. Its the Steeler way of saying you're fired without actually doing it. Hire a new head coach and give him a chance to return to the Super Bowl while Ben is still playing well.

Choice 2. Give Tomlin a 1 year extension if the Steelers fail to make the playoffs for 2 seasons in a row and finish 9-7 to 7-9. Essentially this means he's out if he doesn't make the playoffs and win a playoff game next season.

Choice 3. Extend Tomlin for 3-4 more seasons under these circumstances.

Choice 1 for me.

So what are we looking at time frame?

No not with Tomlin but the day you will be adjusting your posting?
