With the 175th pick of the NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers select… Sutton Smith, EDGE – Northern Illinois. Notes from NFL.com: Undersized, edge-based antagonist for a variety of tackles, quarterbacks and offensive coordinators on his schedule. Smith lacks functional size and struggled in matchups against Senior Bowl tackles so his gaudy college sack total is […]

Alex Kozora made an interesting comparison:

L.J. Fort: 6'0 228, 4.67 40

Sutton Smith: 6'0 233, 4.69 40

And Fort came out of college as an OLB. I'll take that all day.

Looks like he was a monster pass rusher in college. Bulk him up and make amends with Deebo...he is a short ****** too. Later, Dupree.

Lulz K. Dupree will be the starter this year, so some of you might want to soak it in and get past it. Sutton will be a special teams body, and depth... Hopefully more later but let's not get it twisted.

IMO he was drafted to be the special teams hammer and potential situational pass rusher. I'm not sure he can carry more weight because I think he is fully maxed out. For example, ff he did not maintain his strict 5000 calories a day diet he would be a <200lb safety. I like the pick because he is a max effort athletic kid that has roster potential and will do anything to play in the NFL. From the 6th round, what else can you expect?

No **** he wouldn't start this year. That's why I mentioned getting in touch with Deebo...he's a project.

What does deebo have to do with anything?
I think his name keeps popping up since he and Smith are about the same height. There aren't too many more examples of OLB's in our scheme who were around 6-0 tall, I think that's the reason.

He's probably too small to amount to much, but based on the video I've watched, he has really impressive quickness and technique.

He's definitely worth a late pick.

I seriously doubt James Harrison will be helping any Steelers prospects anytime soon. Frankly, I was surprised he was back as one of the honored players at half time of a game last year. I doubt if he will have anything to do with this team or they want anything to do with him. Sometimes I feel like some of you live in this child's fantasy world of Steelerdom. Where every big running back is a Bettis, every short OLB is a Harrison and every White Linebacker is Kevin Greene. And all these old guys are on speed dial to recreate themselves in the body of this young guy. They draft a bunch of people. A coach works with them (and I would say right now those coaches are the weakest they have been in a long time), some of the veterans help out and it is what it is.

After watching tape on him, all I can say is the kid has "IT". As a former coach the more tape you watch of him, the better you like him. He plays with a passion you can't teach. Some like to say he has a high motor. This kid plays hard on every down. He never quits on a play and is always around the ball. If nothing else, he will become a special teams demon the likes of Steve Tasker of Buffalo. I see him stealing one of the last spots on the team just because of his special team abilities.

I am hoping he can be a pass rush specialist this year. Just rotated in for that purpose. Because the team sure could use someone in that capacity. Other than Watt..............

Might be asking a lot, he still has to make the roster first. But yeah....

More or less. Harrison is an outlier for edge rushers and had insane ability to use his leverage. Something that would be awesome to see translated to Sutton.

You said it yourself, he was already back as an honored player and the Steelers more that other teams have their old guard in to help out. And yeah, in a perfect world every new player will fit the mold and match or exceed their predecessor. I don't think it's a coincidence that they drafted a Shazier clone, an AB clone, a Bell (coming out of Mich St) clone, and a Jesse James/Matt Spaeth clone. We have slots in our system that we look to fill.

ya know, the more you watch his highlights, he really does seem to "pop" off the screen. maybe it's just my eyes seeing what i want them to see, but damn, i'm really hoping that this kid brings about some ooo's and ahhh's during camp this summer

Slash it’s worth listing Sutton’s three cone #’s stacked up against LB’s as well.

Oh true, was some notable LBers on that list why I posted it. I will dig to see how he matches up to all LBers....

Good point........
