Day Three - Draft Day Discussion

Here this is from NFL Draft Diamonds Tracker from 2017...He got better https://www.nfldraftdiamonds.com/2018/08/sutton-smith/

Scouting Report

Sutton is a savage coming off the edge or in coverage.

A record breaking All Conference explosive exciting OLB that explodes off the edge with reckless abandon. Can win with speed or his tremendous strength, watched him throw 300 lb OT’s out the way like a sack of small potatoes. . The real deal 14 sacks in 2017 obviously he can get after the QB and hunt down RB’s with undeniable tenacity . Can bullrush or just straight run around OT’s he finds a way to win on the outside with consistency . Attacks like a starving pit bull in a butcher shop. Also has the play recognition to play ILB but his coming off the edge superstar ability is hard not to take advantage of.

Great ball awareness always looking for the big sack or turnover. Lethal with ball in his hand with 2 defensive TD’s runs more like a RB then a LB with the ball in his hands, as a former HS All Pro RB but hits hard like a DE then a LB when he gets home . Athletic and very aggressive closes fast doesn’t miss a tackle. Tackles nice and low chopping guys down he has a pro tackling technique for sure. Anticipation is top of the line combined with his get off makes for a dangerously talented young LB prospect

His first step is up there with the top LB’s in the 2019 class if not all players. That speed can come in handy if asked to cover more at the next level. Attacks the game with the intensity every coach and scout is looking for. Nothing he wouldn’t be able to pick up on whether 43 0r 34 he has the versatility to do either one. Can be a Potential star on ST in the NFL with speed and sure tackling any ST coach would love to have.

Very interested in watching him break even more records his SR campaign as he shows improvement every year. Has Pro Bowl caliber potential and i do not say that about many prospects. .

Sure he is flying under the radar now but as the College season gets going watch Sutton show the Nation why his name is a name to watch . Whatever team is lucky enough to draft him could have a star for the next decade or more.

He can add 5 to 10 pounds he can be a sick DE or stay around 240- 250 and be a force off the edge can play run and pass downs. Can fit in any front but i believe he can really thrive as a 43 sam.

espn said despite his gaudy numbers in college that he struggled against senior bowl tackles.
seems surprising we didn't take him a lot earlier.

Matekevich replacement at the least I think. I like the Sutton Smith pick low risk and could offer something in spot duty

Listening to coach Butler, they're gonna move this kid around, outside, inside, sub packages, etc. Obviously he'll have to cut his chops on ST, but seems like a fire-hydrant, powerful, dynamic linebacker, at about Deebo's height. Watching his tape, he does come screaming around the edge....

Here's how i see this team

OLB - we have 1 guy - Watt. Other than that we have Dupree who has been mediocre and will be a free agent after this year. Aside from that we have nothing. Chick is nothing but a depth guy who can play a few snaps to give guys breathers.

OLB is a huge need IMO. And they have not addressed it at all.

Safety - I'm not sure they have a single quality S on this team and that includes Edmunds. I'm not writing Edmunds off, he may still be good but he certainly didn't show enough last year that makes you think he's absolutely the answer at 1 of the safety spots.

Sean Davis? He's been OK but he's kind of like Dupree.

I see TE as a pretty big need too. MacDonald has a long injury history and if he gets hurt, they're screwed. Gentry is a decent prospect but may take time to develop.

I don't understand pushing off OLB and Safety so late in the draft, That's why the Snell pick bothers me so much. Snell will be a decent player, but he's not special and with the steeler OL, we've seen that guys off the street like Ridley can have success.

There are guys like Mike Weber of Ohio State and Karan Higdon of Michigan still on the board at RB. I'm not huge fans of them but I think either one could do the same job with the steelers as Snell. So could Fitz Touissant.

they could have signed a TE in free agency. Like Maxx from Baltimore. we didn't need to draft a TE at all, IMO.

I know Sutton had a great career in the MAC....

But every game I watched him play....I was not impressed...

Bad timing maybe?

Long shot to make the squad....possible practice squad player in my humble opinion..

Only pick I havnt liked since round 2

this is the first pick i actually can agree with
took a highly productive player(albeit from a small school) in the appropriate round
if he makes it as a special teamer, great. if he gets cut, no biggie.

Sutton only has 30 inch arms. That could be trouble going against OTs. He's a good 6th round prospect and maybe he can play ILB, but he's probably a project.

I'm glad they finally addressed OLB but Sutton is the kind of flawed prospect available this late.

This one I didn't know much about. But they needed OLBer depth. So a late 6th on seeing if he sticks after a productive college career? Seems like no biggie to me...

Interesting notes on Sutton:

The Steelers’ Sutton Smith is tiny for an NFL end, but has the draft’s most monstrous stats
https://www.sbnation.com/2019/3/7/18252428/sutton-smith-scouting-report-niu

In 2018, new Steelers sixth-round draft pick Sutton Smith raised more hell than any other player in college football.

The Northern Illinois defensive end registered 31.5 Havoc Plays — a stat tracked by SB Nation’s Bill Connelly that rolls together sacks, tackles for loss, forced fumbles, pass breakups, and interceptions. That was the most in FBS, college football’s top division, just ahead of career sacks record-holder Jaylon Ferguson and surefire top-10 pick Josh Allen.

The redshirt junior had 15 sacks, 11.5 tackles for loss against the run, four forced fumbles, and a pass breakup, a year after he’d led the country with 14 sacks.

At the combine, Smith said NFL teams had talked to him about potential moves to outside linebacker, strong-side backer, and the JACK, a dual end/backer job.

“What I like about it is it implements pass rush into it, and then it has a little bit of diversity with dropping into coverages and everything like that,” he said. “I like it a lot, actually.”

The NFL’s had plenty of good linebackers with roughly Smith’s 6’0, 233 frame, and his combine three-cone time was faster than any LB in the class, while his shuttle time would’ve been average for a backer. His 40 time was slightly below the linebacker average, but straight-ahead speed isn’t as important as agility for edge-rushers, who need to get around tackles more often than they need to sprint 40 yards.

Ask Smith about the quality of his competition, and he’ll tell you the same thing he told me: to “look at the stats.” Those stats confirm he didn’t just produce against Directional Michigans and Kent State. As a redshirt sophomore, he had five tackles for loss and a sack against Boston College, then 3.5 TFLs and two sacks at Nebraska. In 2018, he had 7.5 TFLs and four sacks across NIU’s games against Iowa, Utah, and Florida State.

“People never thought I’d be able to bull rush people, but yet I can,” he said. “I’m 233 pounds, and I can put a tackle all the way back to the quarterback. The shorter you are and stronger, you [have] a lot more leverage whenever you play.”

This Sutton smith pick is a great pick. One of my favorites.

Any draftnik start a thread about UDFAs the Steelers may look into/want yet? May be room for a Safety or two to make the team this year.

Actually seems like it is close to true.

I like that they added Bush but giving up the 2nd rounder was what i hated. I think it did cost the steelers in this draft. It seems to have caused them to reach for a WR then push TE, OLB and S way down the board.

I love the Justin Layne pick. I think Gentry was a good pick for that round although I would have preferred that take a TE higher. Sutton Smith is a good pick

I hate the Snell pick. RBs Trayveon Johnson and Ty Johnson just went off the board in the 6th and I'd rather have either of them because they have speed.

I guess I'm a jerk for wanting at least 1 RB with speed that can be a factor as a receiver

It's gonna be hard not to root for Sutton Smith. Seems to perfectly encapsulate hard-hitting Steelers football.

How the hell do we not have that in Jay Sam? Having a bruiser is what we have won with. Conner certainly was no slouch catching the ball either.

it was a list of who i thought the steelers might take, not who i liked or wanted

So you didn't like Gary Jennings, Sean Bunting, Juan Thornhill or Ben Banogu as well?

Steelers get DL Buggs....another Bama lineman.

Like the Buggs selection also..

Steeler having a good Saturday...

Sutton is my only concern..

Steelers get DL Buggs....another Bama lineman.

Probably planning on him as a NT... people shied away from himcauseof who he played with.... heis probably a good anchor but won’t have the same impact in the pass rush...

A couple of my draft mags had a third round grade on him
