Some media folks are talking about 1st and 2nd round picks for Frank Clark. If they get anywhere near that, don't you feel that the Steelers have something to explain in terms of their strategy in terms of Bell. It's a pretty similar situation. Big time player with off field baggage who wants a big time contract and both are comparatively young. I don't really mind that Bell and AB are not on this team, but when I think of the lack of compensation I kinda throw up in my mouth. And when I hear about these types of trades I'm like why did they get nothing?

Was no way to trade Bell he never signed his tag. I still think they put the wrong tag on him but it is what it is at this point.... They should get a third for him next year, which would be better than nothing..............

Well, not entirely the whole story. They could have attempted a trade of some sort when it came to an impasse. They didn't appear to try. They could have made a deal where he agreed to sign with the understanding a trade was going to happen afterwards, including the team and details. And how they only ended up with a 3rd and 5th for AB is kind of mindblowing. Even OBJ got a 1st for NY.

No argument there on them being dicks. I don't KNOW what conversations did or did not happen, but reading the tea leaves, it didn't appear that any talks were taking place.
We know one did between Art2 and AB, but all they did was agree to disagree on things for the most part. I truly despise both AB and Bell. I bet we do better without them.
At some point the impass with Bell must have been the same as Clark is. I think they believed they would have him play on the franchise and then sign him the next year. From a direct compensation perspective that was a mistake.

Didn't seem like Bell wanted anything to do with any discussions.
Just read Colbert and Tomlin talking about draft trades. They gave up a 3rd to move up and get Polamalu and a 3rd and a 7th to get Holmes. Don't know why it should cost more than that to move up to 15 if someone falls.

Im just going by the draft value chart.
Using those values, we underpaid for troy by about 200 pts. Of course values back then may have been different because you didn't have the rookie contracts we habe now.
One thing coach mentioned that i do agree with is that the trade value should be considered a rough guide. If a team is super confident their target isn't going to be picked in the next 6 spots, they may take less to move back.

I'm not worried about Frank Clark. However, I think it is a fair comparison of the organizations ability to deal with a problem situation and a disgruntled player. I think you have to rewind the tape sometimes and say did they do a good job in comparison to.

Was watching nfln today and they say that trading up this year might be a little more forgiving as the pool is deep...just not excellent...teams should be willing to take less from teams that want to move up.

I saw the 6th, too, but didn't bother correcting it. That 6th was #200 and something like 11 pts on the trade value chart. Didn't add a lot of value to the trade.

Bell was suppose to come back after training camp but instead just made things up as he went. He all but admitted that in his ridiculous interview in which he felt the need to pile on the Steelers and justify his poor decision to holdout. Besides that, a pass rusher is worth a lot more than a running back with a ton of mileage and a huge contract.
I disagree about his value. At 25 when all this started there was lots there. And ge isn't just a running back. He is a generational all purpose back. In the right hands. In a contenders hands he could easily put you over the top and win a championship.
That was said but an elite RB and one of the best OLines in the NFL can make many of player look a little better. Two players this year we get to witness their progress without having the benefit of both mentioned.

I've said it before. You pair Bell with Brady its almost unstoppable. One of the most instinctive safety valve pass catchers with the best check down qb of all time. I am beyond surprised they wouldn't grab that contract. Or a Mahome, or a Wilson who buys so much time and can create on the fly. The idea that this team will end up netting two 3's and a 5th is simply beyond belief and brutal mismanagement. I really hope they learned a couple things.
1. Don't convert too much money to bonus so that the guy ends up well below market value on an annual salary after he spent what you already gave him.
2. If a guy isn't taking your best offer, you might as well ship him out and get compensation immediately.

Bell is an excellent back, but generational? Not sure about that. There were six running backs who had over 70 receptions last season. When I think of generational guys, I'm thinking of Peterson or Barkley.
He has 8000 all purpose yards in 5 seasons. I'm very comfortable with the term generational and Bell.
