Penn State had their pro day yesterday and they have some good prospect that fit what the steelers are looking for. I’d say they have 3 targets for round 2. A few late round guys and even a couple intriguing undrafted free agent types.
Round 2
Miles Sanders RB - tremendous athlete. Was one of the top RB recruits in the country out of the Pitt area. Ran a 4.49 with 20 reps on bench and 36 in vertical. If anybody watched the drills at the combine, Sanders looked like the most fluid athlete of any RB prospect. He has good hands to be a 3 down back and also kick return experience.
Amani Oruwariye CB - 6’2 and 203 so he’s a big CB. Ran 4.47 with a 36.5 vert. He has good ball skills. He’s a physical CB so he’s not the guy to man cover a slot WR but he is a guy who can run and cover deep on the outside. That’s what the steelers need is an outside CB.
Connor McGovern G/C 6’6 and 311. He’s one of the top rated Guards in the draft and while I don’t see G as a huge need, you never know how a draft will unfold and he would be a great value if still available in RD 2. He can play G or C and played some OT as well. He’s very versatile. If McGovern is the steeler rd 2 pick, it likely means the draft is not falling their way at all and they are grabbing the BPA because other positions of need have been picked clean.
Mid to Late Rounders
Shareef Miller DE/OLB 6’5 and 257. Ran 4.69 with 30 inch vert. He has long arms and was productive. Played DE but did drop in space at times. He did LB drills at the request of several teams and looked good dropping in space. High upside as a pass rusher due to his length. Good mid round prospect.
Nick Scott - Safety 5’11 and 201. Ran 4.43 and 41 inch vert. Very smart player and athletic. High character. Started his career at RB then transitioned to safety. Excellent special teams player. Return experience. Team captain and volunteers with children and disabled in DC area. Was not fulltime starter until senior year due to starting career as a RB.
Still learning position but showed ball skills and tackling ability. His test numbers will have people re-watching film. Played high school in Fairfax VA so Tomlin will love him. I was thinking 6th rounder but those measurables will probably push him higher.
Kevin Givens DE 6’2 and 283. Ran 5.08 with 31 inch vert. He played DT at PSU. He’d project to DE for steelers. He was dirsuptive at times as a gap shooter but undersized for DT. PSU lacked depth there so he had to play it. Late round backup prospect.
DeAndre Thompkins WR 5’11 and 192. Ran 4.33 with 34 inch vert. Pure speed WR with return ability. He’s a one trick pony right now. McSorley lacks top arm strength so Thompkins wasn’t a good fit with him. Could contribute as a vertical threat on a team with a strong arm QB. There’s always room for a guy who runs 4.33 late in the draft.
The Super Sleeper
Johnathan Thomas RB 5’11 and 217. Ran 4.4 with 39.5 inch vert. Obviously a very good athlete. The crazy thing is, most Penn State fans don’t even know who this guy is. He barely played at all stuck behind Saquon and then Miles Sanders. Played mostly special teams. Had a 94 yard kick return vs Indiana last year. Those workout numbers make him a great round 7 flyer or undrafted free agent.
