As a football coach for over 25 years I can never understand why they use a sprinters stance to time players in the 40 yard dash. Why would they not use football stances for each position to get a more accurate time? Most of these players have only practiced a sprinters stance for the combine. I feel this is very deceiving. I want a wide receiver's time from a two point stance he uses in a game. I want a lineman's time, especially the 10 yard split time, from a three point stance, etc. What is your opinion?

I agree, and I'll add more.

If they want to be accurate, they run the 40-yard dash in pads with a helmet.

There are two things to look at. Acceleration and speed for the first 10 yards, and longer-term speed once a player has hit his stride.

I think 40 has some importance for all positions and is very important at DB and WR.

Just another athleticism measure like the bench press, broad jump, and vertical jump. None of them directly mimic a football motion, but they are all done in a standard way for comparison. I'd be surprised if they haven't discussed doing something like having them suit up, but probably just a logistical headache and too many additional variables.

I don't care. I still want Parris Campbell.

I want Parris Campbell too.

He might be there in the second. Doubt the third. Historically we've been spotty in the second but I'd be happy with Campbell for a two. Beats hell out of Will Blackwell, Jeremy Staat, Scott Shields, Alonzo Jackson, Ricardo Colclough, Limas Sweed, Jason Worilds, Mike Adams, and Senquez Golson.

I think the 40 and the sprinter start is just to make sure everything is uniform. That is the most important thing at the combine so you can make apples to apples comparisons to players.

Put on a helmet and pads. One straight sprint from a two point and one cutting/ change of direction.
