I was watching Byron Murphy and wasn’t overly impressed. Gotta be better no?

what did you watch?

I think he is my favorite corner in the draft. He should be able to handle close coverage and off-zone.

I tell you after they work out.

Little disappointed.

Washington CB Byron Murphy #NFLCombine

(40 #1) 4.55u
(40 #2) 4.56u

Greedy ran into a low 4'3 though.

Johnson, Isaiah
Houston
DB 4.40 u

Oruwariye, Amani
Penn St.
DB 4.48 u

Dean, Jamel
Auburn
DB 4.31 u

Baker, Deandre
Georgia

Ya-Sin, Rock
Temple
DB 4.52 u

Dean might be a good developmental sleeper. Has some injury concerns. But as a mid to late rounder could be worth a look...

Dean is one of Supe's guys. Holy crap he's fast.

I saw some website that listed him, Rashan Gary and a 3-4 others as the "athletic freaks" of the draft.
I doubt we take Dean, though.

Murphy looks good in the drills. Greedy was not impressive IMO.

With that speed he better be in the conversation.

"let's take the fast guy at CB"
are you crazy? we can get an undersized, slow, indecisive LB from the PAC-12 conference now!
blank stares all around; phone rings
"hello?"
hey guys - take the kicker. i said we should have drafted Mike Dickson last year and he's ....

"With the 175th pick in the sixth round, the Pittsburgh Steelers select Rick Gamboa, LB, University of Colorado"

thanks, Cooch

1. Baker
2. Murphy
3. Greedy
4. Oruwariye
5. Ya-Sin

Greedy could be the best, but he just isn't consistent enough.

Murphy's 40? He has to have blazing speed and vertical with such a small frame

I like Lonnie Johnson Jr. too. Big, fast, fluid athlete.

Joe Haden ran a 4.57 and he turned out ok.

I was thinking about that after I typed it, and Murphy showed well in the drills. He is still on my want list...

And he will be there around 15-20. I don't think Greedy makes it past pick 15, and teams are going to fall in love with his very good 40 time, where the change of direction and fluidity in a CB's hips for turning-and-running matter more. I don't suggest in any fashion that the 40 time is irrelevant - guy runs a 4.80 he simply cannot play CB in the NFL - but a decent 40 time and good change of direction and ability to track receivers means the guy can play.

CB thoughts. There might not be many players at corner back who turn into #1 corners but you can find some #2 starters.

Baker. 4.52 40. He's a little shorter than ideal and not fast. However, he is feisty with ball skills. Could be the safest pick of the bunch. Likely a top 18-30 type of pick, which means he's a likely player to consider. Stock even

Dean. 4.30 40. WOW. He's tall ( 6'1 " ), jumps well, and very quick in the shuttle. He just moved way up on draft boards. Had a lot of knees injuries in the past. A boom or bust type. Stock up

https://www.nfl.com/prospects/jamel-dean?id=32194445-4111-4360-a36f-715884a085df

Murphy. 4.55 40 which is disappointing. He has short arms and did not do any of the shuttle or cone drills, perhaps hiding his lack of quickness. While his production is excellent, he did it in the Pac 12. Stock down.

Williams. 4.37 forty. WOW, Ultra-productive ball hawk in the SEC with very good height. Might not be good vs the run, or very quick vs slot types but his value to me as a corner on 3rd and long or in a zone is tops in this class. Worth out pick at #20? I think so, he's got a lot you can't coach! Besides our track record for developing corner's is below average.

I'd rank them:

1. Williams. ( likely top 10-20 pick )
2. Baker. ( likey top 18-30 pick
3. Murphy. (Likely top 20-32 ) pick, could slip to round two if he has agility issues.
4. Dean. Day two pick.

Senior bowl comments.

Ya-sin was decent. Good ball skills, extremely competitive. A little grabby. Not that fast. Could be a good #2 starting CB.

Johnson. He was okay in the senior bowl. He has good developmental potential but isn't ready to prime time.

Oruwariye. I think he'll have problems in coverage. I was not impressed with what I saw. Overrated, and I say this wanting to like him.

wouldn't take him before 4/5.

The trouble is Murphy is he doesn't go in round one will likely be gone before we pick in round two.

The Steelers CB strategy if we don't get value in round 1 at CB, might be to pick ILB, WR or DL, and find corner in rounds 2-3, then spend money in free agency at corner. The BPA value at WR in round 1 and 2 for us is MUCH greater than the value for CB in rounds 1 or 2. You could say the same for DL BPA over CB BPA in round two.

With Brown leaving, WR is a need.

Colbert will need to trade the mouthy AB quickly ( He said he doesn't need to play football recently ) and pick WR either in round one or two. I do like the depth at ILB a bit better. I think we can find a guy in rounds 2-4 that's better than what we have. Corner to me is a weak spot in the draft, but like QB, teams will reach based on need.

If I had to pick between Metcalf or Williams for pick #20? Tough call

Get a 1 for AB they can draft a OLBer and CB in 1 and go WR in 2...............

Steelers need an ILB who can stop the run and not be a total disaster on coverage since 2 or 31 teams have learned to pass on 1st down vs. the base 3-4 defense; a significant upgrade at CB to pair with Haden; an edge rusher to take over for Durpee, who looks like Tarzan and plays like Jane; possibly some help at S, depending on how well Terrell Edmunds progresses in 2019; and as you mentioned, WR because of the Brown situation.

The Steelers are just not going to find suitable help at all positions in this draft. They have to make a FA signing. They will have cap room this year, and quite a bit more next even with the signing.

Do it, Steelers. Sign Dee Ford. Pay him the $12-$14 million per. Put him on the left side, Watt on the right, and let them go after the passer. @#$% the dropping into coverage.

Ford is being tagged.
