Dupree

Cleary, Bud has the athleticism. While he doesn't get as many sacks as we are used to from that position, we have gotten more sacks these last couple of years a TEAM. It is not, necessarily, true that getting more sacks from that position gets us more sacks as a team. Maybe that loop that drives all of us crazy creates more room so that others can get to the QB?

Either way, the worst part of his game has been keeping run containment. He sees the carrier and makes a beeline rather than keeping his lane and this lets the RB get around him. I think he got better at that towards the end of last year.

IMO, $9m is too much.$5-$6m is reasonable. The real question is: if you pick up an FA for $6m, do you get better results? Clowney got $7m last year and is a UFA now. He aint gonna go for $6. Maybe he goes for $9, but then you have less money to spend on ILB or CB FA, which, IMLTHO, is far more important. Orakpo got $7.7m to produce .5 sacks

My preference is that they get Bud down to a cap hit of $5m and save the money to spend on FA CB and draft the ILB they need.

Dud is a bum. I wouldn't pay him 3 million. The FI should bring in a rookie.

Well said, Ark

Who is this "FI" person???

9 million for him is idiotic, sucks vs the run, one of the reasons they moved him from left to right, and he has one pass rush move and when it does work, he misses the QB more than anyone I've ever seen. We could find someone for half that to do what he does.
Bud has been here 4 seasons, Watt 2, Watt has the same number of career sacks as Dupree already, has only 12 fewer career tackles, Watt has forced 7 fumble, Dupree 2, Watt has 10 passes defensed, Dupree 6.
We want to give this guy 9 million, and some want to extend him? Why? The guy sucks, just let Olasunkanmi Adeniyi play for 500K and he'll put up the same production.

he has all the athleticism we could ask for in a LB. he was covering TEs a year or two ago, while also rushing the passer.

IMO, when Shazier went down, we should have plugged Durpee in the middle. Size/athleticism to play the middle.

so Ola sucks, now?

Haha good point, let me rephrase that, Ola as a 1st year starter will equal Bud's stats from this past season, and do it for a much lower price.

If he can take as big of step as he took from 2017 to 2018 into this upcoming 2019 season, he will be fine. I know he isn't a star super impact but he also isn't as bad as many here claim him to be. Is he worth the 9+, time will tell but he knows the system, as flawed as it is.

He's no Gildong!

Front Imbecile.

This is the title afforded to CMVLT when he is included on personnel decisions.

It'd be nice if there was some actual proof to this rather than speculation. What did he have 14 sacks in 3 years at Toledo and he is guaranteed to get 6+/year against NFL talent?

Dupree has 20 sacks in 4 seasons, not sure where the 6+ is coming from, Bud has never had more than 6.
5 sacks and 33 tackles, .5 a forced fumble a year for 9 million?????? Hahaha that's ridiculous

you, I assume, have something showing that I think he should be paid $9m/year? or that I said Bud had 6+/year. Presumably, you want better than Bud, which means 6+ sacks/year.

Bud had 5.5 sacks last year and 6 the year before. He had 4 and 4.5 his first 2 years (only played 7 games in 2016?) It doesn't take a lot to consider that 2017 and 2018 are more indicative of the production than his rookie year or a year where he missed part of the season.

if you want "better" you need 6+ sacks from that position. if you want the same, you need 5.5-6 sacks/season.

The Toledo guy had 14 sacks in 3 seasons playing against sub NFL talent. Being generous and ignoring his first year, you get 12.5 in 2 seasons, I think. Was on IR most of last year. 1) what makes you think he can get the same level of production vs. NFL level talent and 2) he can stay healthy?

I'm not saying you think he should be paid that. IMO, better than Bud would be equal stats while being paid 8+ million less, that's my main point.

i'd gladly pay Clowney $1 mil per to get better stats, but that's not the market.
if anyone thinks Clowney's not getting more than $9 mil per season, raise your hand

I often wondered why we didn’t, could be to do with what’s above the neck. The front office covered their bases by declaring his 5th year. There is still a lot of time to pull it if need be. What if he had a break out 15+ sack year last year........... 9.2 wouldn’t touch him. Arthur Moats, not even close.

In general, you are not going to get 6+ sacks a year for less than $5-$6m, unless you get it in the higher draft picks.
we have a bigger gaping hole at ILB and CB that needs to be addressed via the higher draft picks.

It'd be nice if that guy was already on our roster, but we just do not know and we cant take that risk.

No, but in general if you're going to pay a guy 9 million, you need better than 5 sacks and 33 tackles over 16 games.
I'd much rather take my chances with a young player and save 8 million than give 9 million to Dupree.

You are arguing a point im not making. I dont think anyone here thinks we should pay Bud $9m.

Im not arguing, just saying I'll take my chances with Ola, or another cheap FA before I give him 9 million or extend him

Belichek wouldn't pay a slightly above replacement level OLB 9M. I dont know why in the worlids we keep doing it
Belichick wouldn't put himself in a position where he had holes at corner, ILB, probably TE, WR and now OLB. Chickillo will be gone. You cant dump starter and depth.
