Why haven’t they fired Butler yet? Oh no?

Brilliant. He's never lost more than one playoff game in any season.

That's pretty impressive.

Can't stand the team but when you look at Belichicks record in the regular and post season it's unreal. Granted there was some fishy stuff going on but as much as it pains me to say, they have fielded some pretty good teams without the big names other than Marsha. That's the kind of records we should have had the past 15+ years.

Porter wasn't "fired", he wasn't renewed. :wink3:

Dale at DK did an intersting piece this morning talking about how far back this coaching staff goes...Makes me think they will pause long and hard (er, waddle in it) before they fire any of the buddy net.

When I heard Tomlin say that - at least twice - I though, "Huh? Waddle?"

And then I realized he must have meant "wallow."

We don't know how much of the defense is Butler and how much is Tomlin. I suspect that Tomlin has taken over. Butler may be calling most of the plays but it seems Tomlin is calling them in key situations and he's making the calls on personnel and scheme.

The problem with the defense is not playcalling or even scheme. It's that these idiots can't learn. Or they aren't being taught properly. Mistakes are the problem with the defense. The same mistakes over and over. It's not so much DBs getting burned as it is guys left wide open because somebody is in the wrong place or bit on a fake.

Munchak showed the value of a good position coach. Before Munchak arrived we had Pouncey injured because DeCastro dove at his ankle as they both ran different plays. It was chaos. Munchak arrives and almost overnight, the OL goes from garbage to one of the best in the league and that includes coaching up Villanueva from a practice squad guy who had no experience at OT to a better than average starting RT.

Who is the last LB to be developed by the steelers? Watt is good but he kind of came in that way. Dupree still has no pass rush moves and looks like a rookie at times.

Shazier? I actually think Shazier was an underachiever. For all his physical gifts, he should have been a game wrecker. Yeah, he'd make a few plays but he was never a consistent impact guy like Farrior was. He wasn't as good as Keuchly or Bowman

Let's start with good teachers

Think of the staff that Cowher put together over the years. Guys like Capers, Lebeau, Marvin Lewis, Gailey, Mularkey, Whisenhunt, Arians, Haslett, all were in high demand and got head coaching gigs.

Let's get some smart coaches who can break down film and actually teach

Cheating or not, the Pats***** are a well-coached and well-prepared team that makes very few mistakes. Shades' teams regularly lose to inferior opponents and make a lot of mistakes, especially on ST's and defense.

I think this is incorrect as it's implausible that Tomlin doesn't want to point blank win as many football games as possible. He understands he needs a top-notch defense to accomplish that. I think he is at the crossroads in his professional journey, in that he realizes this current collection of coaches, mostly all 'known commodities' from years past, are simply not getting the job done. He also understands, I think, this is a cut-throat business and that his tenure will end soon if he doesn't change things up. Ultimately, he's failed as the HC to get the team to where it wants to go. Say what you want about him, Tomlin's no dummy, and when 7-8 HC's get canned within hours after the season ended, he knows what he's up against. My guess is he's gonna take a bit of time, huddle with Rooney & Colbert and chart out the path forward, as far as coaching - and possibly schematic - changes. We'll see.

Take a bit of time? You'd think the last 8 years would have been enough.

Ron Burgandy, you see this,I see this, almost everybody sees this.
Unfortunately, until Art II sees and acts on this this “fog of mediocrity” will continue.
Chas Noll has to be rolling in his grave.
Every player needs to watch Rocky Bleir’s recent video and understand what they need todoin offseason.
The coaching staff needs a major overhaul.

Art II have a converstion with the Chief!!!

As one poster already said, statistically the defense was improving, particularly in the last half of the year. Again I say I will be surprised if they fire Butler. Internally, they can rationalize this season failure on a bad kicker and some bad luck (Ben hurt in Oakland, Bell). I don’t agree with this, but I can see them NOT moving on from Butler this year. We shall see.

Are you talking about the same 'last half of the year' when, after being 7-2-1, they surrender 4th quarter leads to various teams and ended up missing the playoffs as consequence?

UNTIL you can show me in percentages of the "HONEST ABE WINS" versus the "CHEATING bastertiges wins" I will hold my desire to emulate the ******* ******* ****-head dinks. For me it's

"RED HOT POCKER TIME 24 / 7

Take every game away that has cheating in it, win or lose and see where the AZzhats are?????? 0-gazillions

Winning makes it easier to do things right,.........lose on a 5-game let down and see what that does to a team in how they play ...............

Sorry dude. I can't do that. Probably shouldn't have done the comparison game but I can only say if we had effective coaching for the past 15+ years that our record and trips to the Super Bowl would be much improved. Others have done it with lesser talent. Others have not but I'm ******* tired of watching our team lose to or struggle to beat ****** teams they should absolutely bury.

The defense was abysmal in zone this year... the secondary is pretty much designed fir man coverage and the pressure schemes too... lack of communication and slow reads led to huge gaffs in zone and the late game collapses were often due to bad read react play in zones....

Part of the issue is zone only really works with a few greater playmakers, and we just have guys looking to run with players or make big hits by design.....

TOTALLY agree with what you are saying I just can't use a cheatriot comparison to a more than honest other teams.

YES our coaching has been very subpar. We should have been at least two more wins in the SB. Hell the Green Bay lose was on coaching. We had them beat and it wasn't Spinthenfall's fumble it was the ineptitude of a head coach NOT taking over and call offensive plays against their depleted secondary. HERE a better coach would have won the game. How many seasons of having below .500 teams beat us and it came back to affect playoff birth or seeding???

JMM, like you I too am tired of the same bullshit TOMLIN spews out, Not just in verbal but in action as well.

That line was a bunch of underachieving high draft picks. As you said, basically overnight it became the best offensive line in the league. Meanwhile, we keep investing high picks on defense and they continue to disappoint. I think they took some of the wrong guys in there, but I also think there was enough talent that with the right coaches, they would be performing at a higher level right now.

Has anyone off the Tomlin coaching tree taken a promotion at any point (I don't consider Arians to be in that tree).

He's still under contract. FWIW, they would have to work out some details for his parting gifts.

Right, the Steelers seldom fire anyone. They just wait for the contract to expire. This HURTS the team. Rooney must be the easiest man in the world to work for.

In 15 years, Cowher had EIGHT assistants become an NFL head coach. Tomlin has had ZERO assistants (Bruce Arrians was a Cowher hire) hired to be an NFL headcoach. Speaks volumes about the quality of assistants Shades has had and also speaks profoundly to the low regard the rest of the NFL has for this staff.

how many 3rd and longs did jordy burn William go 2-03 they were like 3rd and 18 and 1 3rd and 20+ and for the mendyu fumble we had a converted h back playing fb who could not block he was washed away and when mendy was surging he had no one to block and was gang blocked by hard hitting LB Hawk clay that caused the fumble, not to mention that piss poor OL kemo blown into bewn on the INtc when he was trying to air it deep to Wallace.

Gotta be honest with you...While THAT WHOLE THREAD IS MUMBLED, I still remember ALL THAT **** he just mumbled. We should have stole that game at the end

You think they would have fired the d coord first before Porter. I’m starting to think they are gonna keep Butler.

Maybe they are waiting to see if Cleveland is going to pass on hiring Gregg Williams as their next Head Coach. Then Colbert/Tomlin will personally Uber drive Williams to the South Side Complex for a sit-down visit and interview for the Def. Coordinator position?

Bruce Arians "retired" on January 21st.
Dick LeBeau "resigned" on January 10th.
Todd Haley announcement on January 17th.

There's time for the Steelers to make a move. The only urgency would be if there is concern another coach would get picked up by one of the new HC hires.

Sounds like Munchack interview with Denver went well. We will need a new OL coach soon.

The position coaches have their year end meetings this past week, the coordinators are this coming week I believe I heard from Bouchette maybe.

They have up an ungodly amount of points against a team with no offense last year in the playoffs. They either blew double digit leads or gave up the game losing drive in the winning moments against the Browns, Raiders, Chargers and Saints. What is their to consider?
