Pittsburgh Steelers 8-5-1 at New Orleans Saints 11-2
Time December 23[SUP]rd[/SUP],4:25PM
Odds: New Orleans gives up 6.5 points
The NFL is such a week to week sport. Yesterday I felt like the playoffs were on the line vs. a team that historically has owned us. A loss would have been devastating.Today, the dragon has been slain, and we have a narrow 1/2 game lead over the Ravens. The initial good news is the Ravens play the LA Chargers next week, and finish up vs the Browns. We play at New Orleans, and finish up vs. the Bengals.
It’s simple, it we win out, we take the division. If we go 1-1 in the final two games, and the Ravens go 1-1 in the final two games, we win the division.
For whatever reason, the Saints are one of the few team since the AFL-NFL merger that have bettered the Steelers. The Saints are 8-7 all-time vs the Steelers. This is puzzling as they were a bad team for decades. Mike Tomlin has never beaten the Saints.
While it was refreshing to see the Steelers double covering a teams primary weapon, and not asking linebackers to cover wide receivers, I have my doubts we can replicate the same type of performance vs. the Saints. Drew Brees is completing 75.7 % of his passes, which is ridiculously good.He has thrown 34 touchdown passes and just 4 interceptions. And he’s a tough guy to sack. When called upon, Kamara and Ingram run theball well, and like other teams should be able to exploit our soft middle. The Saints on average score 34.4 points a game. On defense, the Saints are good vs the run, and rather weak vs the pass though their pass rush is decent.
It will be interesting to see if the Steelers try to control the clock vs. the Saints or get into a shoot out type of game in their backyard.
A win here would convert me into a believer that we can not only make the playoffs, but win a playoff game as back to back wins over the Patriots and Saints are something only a very good team can do in December.
Unfortunately I just don’t see it.We don’t have any DB that can limit Mike Thomas, nor do we have a safety or linebacker that can cover Kamara. Brady if you can get in his face can fold.Brees is still mobile and spreads the ball around well. Put it to you this way, he has thrown 13 touchdown passes to different receivers.
