It's about time...

He should have run through that ball, and caught it. I won't argue that. Switzer, for not being a #3 caught passes and moved chains yesterday. That's what we need from him. Not many are talking about McDonald whiffing on an easy TD either. In order right now we have JuJu, Brown (Listed 2nd because he is doubled every game), McDonald, Conner and even James and Switzer catching passes. Ben and the kid have zero timing and can't have that many reps in practice. A half step in the NFL is everything when it comes to timing on a route. If we take care of the football we'll be alright. We have more than enough offensive weapons even if he doesn't play to get the job done.

Switzer is more of a gadget guy, and it's worked, but he's not going to line up in the slot or outside and do much, that's what we are missing. I think everyone gets on him because he has the physical skills to be pretty good.
It didn't help his case that juju did so well last year

When the only thing that you can remember are his bad plays, it means his other 8 were probably nothing to write home about. Secondly, Neither Brown nor Ward were picked in the second round and expected to be impact players their rookie seasons.

both are or should be hall of fame receiver's and Washington is on pace tie or beat their rookie years. I would not write him off yet

This TEAM is fully capable. For some reason yesterday the overly invinvable attitude got to them. Did they believe the hype generated towards them...........making themselves thinking they didn't have to work quite as hard.......... 4-6 team...............on the road ..................
NEW WEEK new attitude !!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't get the Grimble hate. Kid tried to be a boss and got beat. It happens.

Lesson learned, "don't try to be a boss". Be a team player and score. You are not Vance. You see the guy coming hard from the right and you are that close. Dive for the pylon, or cut back to the right / behind him and get in.

Don't think of WRs as #1, #2, #3. They are position players.

AB is X, and we have the best X in the league.
JuJu is Y (slot), and we have the most dangerous slot threat in the league.
Washington in is the Z.

In 10 games (5 Starts) he has 8 rec (25 targets) 77yds and 1 TD. That is piss ******* poor for a Z receiver. Z receivers are supposed to spread the field, make downfield receptions, and pull bracket coverage away from AB, and extend drives on 3rd down. They usually average around 15-20yds a catch. His average is 7.7. That's slot receiver average for an edge receiver. It is so below the line, he can't even sniff it.

Hunter isn't doing any better. 4 games 10 targets 3 receptions 21yds 0TDs 7.0 average.

Compare it to last year's Z:
Bryant/ 15games 8 starts (84 targets) 50rec 804yds 12.1ave, 3 TDs. This was a down year from Bryant, and I'd be ecstatic if we had similar production this year from Wash.

Here's a look at a productive Z in Bryant's previous years.
2015 11 games 5 starts 92 targets 50rec 755yds 15.3ave 6 TDs
2014 10 game 3 stars 48 targets 26rec 549yds 21.1ave 8 TDs

In 2016 we had a platoon at the Z
Sammie Coates 14 games 5 starts 21rec 435yds 20.7ave 2 TDs
Colbi Hamilton 11 games 8 starts 17rec 234yds 12.8ave 2 TDs

Colbi's the worst Z of the bunch and is still tripling the pace of Washington's productivity.

People rip Sweed at the Z, and really he was only the Z in 4WR sets, but even his numbers are better than Wash:
11 games 0 starts 10 targets 6 rec 64yds 10.7av

Sweed's numbers are comparable, but he had 60% less targets and no game starts.

I don't know what's wrong with Washington, he has the tools to be productive this year. But to realize he is a problem, you have to understand how the Steelers utilize the Z, and recognize the production they expect out of that position.

IMO, this game was lost by Ben.

Grimble's cluster **** was early, so while costly, it was easier to make up since we had a LOT of time left in the game.
The blocked kick - the ****? I thought they couldn't line up over center or leap.
Conner's fumble was absolutely mind-blowing. Seems he fumbles on spectacular plays, but not on hard hits. Weird.
Washington needs to sit. Play Hunter.

Yes, I said Ben cost us the game. The first INT was bad, but like Grimble's fumble, we had time to overcome it.
His last, game-sealing INT was so asininely stupid it made me wonder if he was missing a chromosome. Sure, he and Conner collided in the backfield, and yes, the Denver defense was about to knock the **** out of both of them, but in that instance, he should have thrown the ball away to have one more play.

Still, B-INT-jamin is my QB. We live and die with him.
He'll shake this off.

It shouldn't have even come down to Ben trying to tie the game at the end. If players aren't careless with the ball earlier and make the plays they're suppose to, we probably are up 14 in the 4th qtr and run the clock out. Ben didn't lose this game but he did almost tie and win it again for the team.

P.s. how about the defense make a play for once, no play makers whatsoever.

Great write up Cope and thanks for the analogy with the stat numbers, really puts things into perspective.

Washington is performing more and more like Limas Sweed... I hope he can turn this around...

Ben has rushed through plays that close to the goal line with time running out in the game before (i.e. regular season Pats game last season). Big dummy said after the game, that was as fluky of a pick as he has ever seen. He blamed the INT on the NT getting blocked so well, that he was pushed into the path of the ball. Never mind the CB in front of AB that would have picked also. LOL

Big Dummy is the reason we are 7-3-1 and have multiple rings, maybe the Oline and Connor should've gotten the ball in the endzone the play before

Thank god we don't make decisions for this team. Washington has 8 catches for the season. I believe that is more than Brown or ward had their rookie seasons at this point. Brown ended with 16 catches his rookie year and ward had 15.

Many rookie Steeler Wide Receivers picked between rounds 1 and 4 produced in their rookie years.

Randel El 489 yards as a receiver
Holmes 824 yards as a receiver
Wallace 756 yards as a receiver
Bryant 549 yards as a receiver ( 8 TD's )
Ju-ju 917 yards as a receiver ( 7 TD's )

------------------------------------------------

James Washington, has 25 targets has but 77 yards after ten games

Some rookie WR's had shaky rookie years. Coates and Sweed, funny I liked neither guy. They busted.

I'm not saying Washington will be a bust ( Did not want him in round 2, ILB Baker was my call ), that will take 1-2 more years to determine. I am saying he's a tremendous disappointment as a rookie. Other Steelers rookies blew past him, and so did many of the 2018 rookie peers at WR.

Brown did not get as many chances in his rookie year, though I do recall him stepping up in a playoff game

coach you are hard on Washington but have a hard on for Thomas. would you like to make a bet on who has the better pro career?

for the record I would want it to be a push as I would like both to be hall of famers

James needs a couple catches and a nice game to get rolling.

He was awesome is pre-season. Maybe he just had good chemistry with Landry LOL.

It’s ABOUT TIME to light the fire under this team when we bring both SB 13 and 43 trophies out to the field. It’ll be good to see a lot of old Steelers come relish their historical imprint in front of the nation. A rally I wish to witness.
