This is a submission from our friends over at SteelerNationUK.co.uk By Gordon Dedman “One for the thumb” became the call sign of Steeler Nation in the nineties as their team strived to move on from the seventies. Four Super Bowls in six years in that decade spoilt Steeler Nation. It was an inheritance that demanded […]

I still have not rewatched any part of that game. we should won that game easy. That was the longest off season I can remember. Even the following year when we lost to Dallas in a game we should have won, it didn't hurt as much as That Chargers game

Ugh what a painful loss. With Neil O. this one ranks right up there with the Dallas loss.

I just posted something similar, funny how fans often remember the two games together.

Thanks O'dummy !

That Chargers team was better than anyone cares to give them credit for. They played in a tougher division than us, had a tougher schedule than we did, had a top 5 defense and like the 7th ranked offense. The Chargers were bad for so long I think everyone just thought it was a given we'd win.

I think you're right Coryea and on that given day BOTH teams played and PLAYED hard. That is what made the defeat so miserable.

Salute the nation

Threw a keg across the yard that afternoon. It was as about as gut wrenching as watching the Bucs lose their ticket to the World Series in the bottom of the ninth back in 92.

Welcome to Pittsburgh Sports.. Where ulcers don't just form,,,they're earned.

Alfred freakin’ Pupunu.

The common opinion at the time was that a Steelers/49ers matchup would’ve made for a better game.

That was the year everyone was talking about wanting to see Sanders try and tackle Foster

The worst was Pupunu beat us on 2 3rd and longs. Blitzburg got victimized by an athletic TE.

Where have I heard that before?????

3 more yards, then next year it was ******* Larry Brown in super bowl xxx. That game still bugs me if I think about it much.

Man super bowl XL was a long long time coming.

Chargers were really good that season, but my GAWD Pittsburgh shouldve won that game by 2+ scores!! One of the most bitter pills I've ever had to swallow as a sports (not just football) fan.

So many things I remember from that game.....the first drive for a TD after converting a 4th down mid-drive, Fosters first fumble in over 400 carries in San Diego territory when a reply would have showed his knee down, the Pupunu catch, the 40+ yard TD pass to Martin on a 3rd and long with no safety coverage late in the game and then 3 more yards.....UGH.

That loss was mind boggling and to this day I still can’t believe it. All I remember was we were going up and down the field with ease...I know we had TOP at over 35 minutes. NOD had almost 400 yards. The only thing killing me were all those yards and no points. Plus there were a ton of penalties against Pitt in that game. Maybe a hundred yards called and nothing hardly on SD. Who knows maybe I was pumped from blowing out Cleveland the game before....acid taste still lingers...

The Bucs game, oh God....WE HAD THAT GAME. Chico Lind was money, until the ninth....

I layed on the floor for 30 minutes until the phone rang from a lady friend who did the Braves war chant while doing the Tomahawk Chop....

Better than what?

The Chargers were 18-and-a-half-point underdogs in the Super Bowl that year, still couldn't cover with a late meaningless touchdown, and lost by 23.

Better than anyone wants to admit.
They played in a tougher division than us, the Bengals and Oilers combined for 4 or 5 wins that year.
They had a tougher schedule than us.
Their offense was 5th in scoring and defense was 9th.

I'm not saying we should've lost, but I still have no idea why everyone thought we'd roll them. I remember the week lead up to that game, fans were dismissing the game and talking about going to the Super Bowl

Was there anyone else on that team that you'd want to take care of the final out? Still can't believe he botched that play. :)

That was the last baseball game I ever watched. Between the strike and not getting a real salary cap after. I was done with MLB. Never went back. Don't even care.

Same here. I couldn't go back. Not after watching the owners destroy the league by giving in to the Yankees and Boston. Small market teams have no chance because they don't have the resources to compete. Every once in a blue moon you'll get a Marlin team of yesteryear but it's mostly the big spending teams with scouts that can go everywhere and money to burn.

Bream was out. Spanky LaValliere tagged him on the foot. Sid’s slide leg was elevated and never touched the plate.

Agreed. I'm 58 years old. Most heartbreaking Steelers loss in my life.
