Morgan burnett

Edmunds is the starter. Burnett will get special packages.

I think you're right stillwright and EDMUNDS is deserving so. I think he's advanced as the more playing time goes. Burnett is good depth regardless.

So, what is it that you guys love so much about Edmunds?

The bad angles he takes? The missed tackles? Getting dominated by downfield blocking? Or his poor coverage skills leading to pass interference penalties on third down in the end zone?

All of the above I guess. I just mentioned that he was the starter....because...well he is.

Once he's fully back they will implement the special packages they worked on during the offseason and training camp. The wrinkles on defense haven't been implemented yet.

Ohh, so that's whats' been holding back the unleashing of "HELL".............................

Edmunds is a rookie thrust into a starting role since the vet we added has been hurt all year.

He's not infallable, but I love his athleticism. He can hit hard, he's not afraid to put his head down in the running game to make stops, and he has ball skills to deflect passes and get ints.

I see improvement game to game. He's still making mistakes, but I'm glad to see he's getting better and more comfortable each week.

Burnett , although dealing with injury,, has been really disappointing to me. I really liked him at Gbay and thought he would for sure be the starter. He has got half a season left to prove he can be the player he was at Gbay. I would have jumped on Clinton Dix for what Gbay dumped him for as well, who cares if he is a rental player.

I do think Edmunds has good potential, who was a reach in the 1st round. He has made some obvious rookie mistakes, I dont think we planned on him starting this year.

I'd have to dig for the articles, but the Steelers specifically drafted Edmunds and signed Burnett with the intention of having special defensive packages. You can't show those packages when guys are hurt and not on the field. These special wrinkles will come out with these guys healthy and on the field. I expect to see Edmunds playing some MLB on 3rd downs.

Don’t be fooled, or safeties are still a bend but don’t break unit that gets lit up vs the best QBs. While I see better decision making an less bone headed penalties now that Mitchell and Thomas are gone ( thank god ) , the lack of plays 7 games into the season is alarming.

Davis. 0 interceptions, just 3 passes defended, and 0 sacks.

Edmunds 1 interception ( it was a gift of a throw ) only 2 passes defended, and zero sacks. Tackling at times has been an issue, but he does move well once he’s see’s where the ball is going

Burnett. #42 has had injury issues. 0’s for passes defensed, interceptions, and sacks.

As for our other rookie safety Marcus Allen, I think he’s going to be terrible vs the pass if he ever sees the field.

To put into context Mike Hilton himself has as many PDs and interceptions as the enter safety group and Haden is well ahead of them in passes defensed with 9, and might single handily beat the entire roster of safeties in terms of passes defended.

With a very good pass rush, I’d expect more. The hope is with Edmunds maturing and Burnett now healthy things will get better and it will need to as we play some very good passing teams soon.

And that's all we can hope for.

Now if Burns could stop getting Burnt......

If both are fully healthy in a few weeks I hope it is Burnett starting. I like Edmunds potential but he's still a rookie and I'd rather go with the experienced vet if both are healthy. Edmunds needs to improve his angles but he's a rookie so some of his mistakes are to be expected.

This could have been written about Burns his rookie year. I hope these guys get more, continued coaching. Burns has too much in the skill set to just suck and good bye.

Burns is under contract in 2019 with a cap number of $3,051,677. If the Steelers cut him, they save 1.75 million Its unlikely we can bring in a better player for that amount, so we keep him and hope for the best.

If Burns was a free agent in 2019 ( He's not ) no way would I want the Steelers to give him a 6-9 million dollar contract.

It took a while for Dupree's light blub to go on. Perhaps the same can be said for Burns? We'll see

Either way with Haden getting up there in age, the Steelers need to spend a high draft pick on a Cornerback.

Top seed comments are a vast over reach. I agree Cope. Much like Davis I'd prefer a rookie making mistakes at warp speed then a journeyman who is always a step behind. By the end of the year you have an experienced player with extra athleticism.

Yes....the agenda is pushed.....

Guess what Genius, the Steelers safeties (Davis specifically since you bash him so much) have one of the least pass attempts/completions ratios. Why? Because they are not getting targeted because their coverage is so good. They are in the top 10 in deep pass attempts. With The DL pushing the QB well, and Haden and Hilton playing all-pro ball, Edmunds and Davis are doing what they are supposed to do, bracket in coverage and seal gaps between backers.

The last time they had a blown coverage for long gain was against Balt, with Brown and the wheel route mixing signals for Joe and Sutton.

They were giving up over 300 yards passing early when Joe and Hilton were out. But since they have been healthy, pass defense yards per game has dropped about 75-100 yards per game.

Another thing clueless, Hilton is going to have more opportunities for PDs and tackles, because of the position he plays. He’s in the middle of the field as a “starting” slot corner.

Tackling......proof you don’t watch games. Davis has more solo tackles than Joe or Hilton. Edmunds is only a couple behind Joe. I’m surprised you haven’t started your missed tackles rant.....but we know why it doesn’t support your agenda now.

Marcus Allen...... you opine him being terrible, yet he has played how many snaps to make that suggestion? Zero. This is why your “evaluations” are laughable. No objectivity only proclamations based on what you think is fact.

I hear yaz Hines57 and was just having a little fun. I too Remeber the sub packages talk. I'm curious to see them and if they are still relevant. I want EDMUNDS to develope and by playing. If Burnett and EDMUNDS are near same ability then you don't bring Edmunds off the field. You insert Burnett into those packages. HEARing yaz all the way but still taking time to insert humor.

Good read Cope, thanks for the post. I see EDMUNDS developement as well. It's just as the article says, the game is slowing down as he makes and reacts faster. I'm all for Burnett working his way back and keeping EDMUNDS on the field.

Edmunds is learning and he's made some mistakes, but he's also showing flashes of why they liked him so much. And it's only 7 games in, give the guy some time.

Re: Burnett, seems with he, Hilton & Fort on the field in their dime package, they limited the Cleveland TEs to basically nothing. Yeah, they scored that garbage time TD but that Njoku (sp?) didn't even have a catch IIRC.

What did Polamalu have his rookie year? No Ints, 1 FF, 4 PDs and 2 sacks? And he didn't start a single game. Best known for jumping in front of a pass, I think it was against the rams, went right through is arms, the WR caught it (Holt?) and ran for an easy TD. In that one moment, Coach was right about 'Big Head'.

Edmunds isn't Troy, but he will improve.

Let's start out with STOP with the Excuses. Other safeties are making plenty of plays on the ball Ike. Just 5 Passes defensed for the group. This sucks. Other players by themselves that also play safety have lapped our collection of safeties. Heck some linebackers have done the same. GASP.

For example

John Johnson, 8 passes defended
Kareem Jackson 8 passes defensed

https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/player-stat/defense-pass-defenses

But, but coach, Edwards is just a rookie. Well rookie safeties like Justin Reid ( now you can say he's right, but it’s an agenda ) are tied with all Steeler safeties in terms of defending a pass. Wow.

I guess that yeah but he plays the slot nonsense has been completely destroyed. You don't need to play the slot to make plays on the ball.

Do I really need to tell you that other teams have guys injured too? More excuses!

Oh I watch games dude, check the game day thread. You might see me pointing out that Edwards needs work on tackling. He leads the team with missed tackles. A fact.

Marcus Allen has played how many defensive snaps? Yeah I thought so. I'm telling you now he's too slow with limited ball skills. That is why he is not playing much in the base defense. Ya think?

Come play again, I do enjoy chatting with you,
