I know the trade deadline is Tuesday. So that is a done deal. But what is the drop dead date for him to sign the franchise tender and how does the roster exception work exactly.

Nov 13th is the deadline.

Roster exemption is for a 2 week period of time. Both parties have to agree on the amount to be paid, which in this case is highly unlikely.

I am sure the Steelers won't want to pay him to get in shape.

And really his only option is sign or not sign so they realistically can wait till week 10 then hold him out without pay two weeks so he basically gets 4 games and the postseason to show what he is worth to the rest of the league in limited playing time

I understand what you mean about the exemption 2 weeks. Is there an arbitrator involved. Can the steelers simply say.. We will pay you 50 / day per diem during the exemption weeks" and bell has to accept it?

If he refuses to accept their $50/day per diem (just an example) . Can the steelers say too bad take it or leave it. ?

If bell says that's not enough, what does he lose sitting out even more (besides money)?

I know he needs 6 games played for it to count as a season. I know the 2 games roster exemption do not count toward that, so he needs to sign at least before game 9. Ravens game is game 8. So he has to sign at least after that.

Bell's only option is not to sign.If the Steelers and his agent do not agree on the two week amount.

My understanding is if he signs by Nov.13th he is eligible for free agency. If he doesn't Steelers can tag him using the same amount offered this year if desired.

I do not believe the roster exemption fails into play in that scenario at all.

League min for a player of his experience is fair if all they expect is for him to practice in sweats and the other 4 weeks or so are guaranteed. If they hold that chip, use it. Like I said, I would be preparing him to be a third down back and create some packages where him and Conner line up and he is flexed into slot.

I am still debating that third down back scenario.

Only this time it isn't due to my dislike of the man.

But two factors:

1 I am worried it will disrupt Conner's game flow. He is in a groove, and I don't wish to experiment with that just to force feed Bell in there. Our redzone efficiency is trending up, and I don't want to risk altering that as well.

2 No way will he be really effective early on as he once was. Too long of inactivity, that could also result in stalling drives.

I would play him in relief like Ridley's role, and perhaps garbage time, to see how he performs.

I wouldn’t be shocked, nor mad if they pull it when he finally wants to sign it.

I would. Simply for the fact that he immediately becomes a free agent and you know that if that happens, he's on his way to N.E. as a big "**** You" to the Steelers. Also, **** giving him the ability to be a FA any earlier than they have to. Make him a relief back and only give him a few carries per game unless he's needed. Make it feel like he's sat out a whole ******* year... hopefully he loses his edge

The Steelers apparently told him they will exercise the 2 week exemption and they will not pay him for the 2 weeks. That has been in several articles over the past week or so.
