Coach, don't read this, we know how you hate to be wrong ;)

Here's an article about Davis being the player we need at FS. And honestly he made more plays last game than No Play Mitchell made all last season. Honestly, I'm bent at the coaching staff for not keeping Wilcox in after the Ravens game when he had an INT. Oh well, at least my problems with the coaching staff are actual, instead of loose associations of on field play...

I think they found a natural position for him to best take advantage of his skill set.

His range is his strength, it is a wonder when Mitchell was sucking it up last year they didn't give him a look-see.

When Edmunds settles in it is going to be a pretty speedy secondary.
 
Young, fast, dynamic, and skilled. Could be one of the best secondaries we've had here in a long time. Davis, Edmunds, Burns, Haden (Sutton, will play better guaranteed if he has to play for Haden more so he counts too), Hilton (gotta love this kid, just a baller). That's a dangerous secondary
 
we will find out. it was against the browns in a monsoon. not exactly a huge test

I'll settle for him holding on for an interception. He dropped one that could have won us the game. Cleveland does not have a passing QB, and the weather was pretty bad. Plus our pass rush was all over the browns.

With Watt, and a suddenly awake Dupree + Heyward and Tuitt, playing free safety for the Steelers should be a lot of fun.

Having said that if Davis plays well vs Kanas city, I'll take notice. Until then our 1st round pick and most expensive free agent pick up were safeties.

Yet he still starts with all that 'talent' influx. Burnett is a stop gap vet safety and at $2.4M he hardly made a dent in the cap. That's like 2 weeks of Bell not playing football! Funny how both of those players are SS and they moved our starting SS from last year to FS and immediately are reaping rewards.

i also like how you refer to an extended batting of the ball to prevent a catch, a 'dropped interception' Classic! But I too am excited to see what the D can do on a good field with our pass rush as dominant as it appears to be. If the QB isn't mobile, that team is going to get crushed.

Actually I think our test is vs an accurate QB who can read a defense and throw it quickly, not a mobile one who's limited as a passer.

I'm still not sure about the defense. Cleveland is that bad, but I will say this. We've got a collection of blue chip players in their prime or entering their prime in Heyward, Tuitt, Watt, and Haden on defense, with some good red chip players in Hilton and Burns. Dupree? Maybe he'll be motivated or the light went on. He's in his contract year.

Coverage at ILB and S worries me.

Taylor took Buffalo to the playoffs with no WRs and stats show his avg release after the snap was 2.8 seconds. So when you say limited passer are you comparing him to Mahomes? After one game? Against a defrocked defense?

Burns, red chip? Has a higher side than that. He just needs to learn from Joe on how to keep his cool.

FYI, Bud already had his 5th year picked up. So his “contract year” starts after next year.

Taylor was so good Buffalo benched him and did not want him back. He's not passing for many yards. Who wanted him? Only Cleveland and Taylor knew they were taking a QB #1 overall. Yes, Bud is playing for a new contract.

As for Davis, some say the coaches never used him correctly. Like I said in camp, he's not close to a slot corner...he was abused there. Who was right? Whether or not he can play free safety on a team full of pass rushers remains to be seen.

Based on what I have seen, he's not good in coverage. And in the open field, he takes bad angles to the ball and tends to miss tackles that lead to long runs. I have said I do think he's good on the blitz.

Watt had 4 sacks, 10 tackles and blocked a field goal to preserve a tie, otherwise people would be out with their pitchforks.

Davis? He dropped an interception. Hardly standing out.

You must have missed this game then. He came up to stop the run twice, hard. Plus he had 2 PDs and a QB pressure, so either you missed this game, or you missed the fact that he already outplayed our previous FS in one game for a whole season of work of Mitchell. You continue to downplay a PD on 3rd down that would have been a first down and called it a missed INT when it was an incredible play to end a series that could have won the game.

He also didn't take a bad angle in the Cleveland game, or can your game evaluation find one?

Let’s hold judgement on Buffalo’s coaching decisions.....they haven’t been a measurement of success in regards to QBs....Trade McCarron, start Peterman?

Your contempt for Davis is in full bore. You say “some people” think coaches didn’t use him properly. You mean YOU say that. As you said in camp “he’s not close to a slot corner and abused there...who was right?”

Right? Right about what? Let’s see...Davis is a safety, not a corner, boundary or slot. He was tested at corner in his rookie season because of injuries to the DB squad and had played the position in college.

Idiot statement on your part.

You cherry pick circumstances to fit your point, which isn’t one to begin with. Rather it’s an ill informed opinion because you didn’t like the draft pick. Seems to the masses here, you are poor evaluator on the safety position. You can’t even admit you got Troy wrong.

Cleveland completed 37.5% of its passes, and the pass rush was all over them. They did not run it well, either. The dropped interception counts as PD and would have iced the game. Davis has 8 PD's last year, below average for starting safeties, and like I said we have a good pass rush helping him out.

I'm not saying he played poorly. I'm saying this was Cleveland. Let's see how he does vs. an NFL team that can win games. Then we'll see if he has improved or not.

It would be ironic if he shines at free safety, as many here love to say the "coaches didn't use him properly ".

The way I see it, he's on an excellent defense to shine with a very good pass rush helping him out. Watt, Dupree, and Heyward might have 30 sacks all by themselves.

Cherry pick. Cherry pick Coach.....that’s your new name.

Ben not having 5 TO’s that would have iced the game, Connor not fumbling, that would have iced the game. Missed call on the punt, that would have iced the game.......

The fact he is playing FS, means his opportunity for PDs or picks are higher since he’s the over the top failsafe.

I actually liked him as a press corner coming out of college and never scouted him as a good fit as a box safety.

I think he fits well as free safety. Good speed. Good tackler. I think the coaches didn't trust him as the last line of defense when he was so young, but now that his head has caught up to his physical talents, that's his best spot.

I wasn't the biggest fan of the Edmunds pick (thought it was a reach), but he fits what we like and he fits the modern roll of a strong safety/linebacker hybrid. And I think the coaches knew Mitchell was more of a liability than we all realized and that was a big position of need to upgrade our safety spots and how we use them.

This defense is loaded with high round Steeler draft choices everywhere (Heyward, Tuitt, Hargrove, Watt, Dupree, Burns, Davis, Edmunds) and we stole another 1st round talent getting Haden. There really is no reason for it not to start producing on the field. They have to start doing better, consistently. They have to start making impact plays, generating turnovers and winning a game or two for us when the offense sputters.

I'm starting to think this is the year we see a jump in the defense and the offense is the part that starts to show its age and weaknesses. Hopefully the bad Roethlisberger ran its course last week and if we can play smart, solid offense we can lean on this up-and-coming defense to do more and protect leads and not play like we have to score 30 every week to win.

I'm kind of boomish on the defense when you look at it on paper.
 
I thought Sean Davis looked great out there last week. He seems to have gotten bigger and stronger. Most importantly, he seemed to be in the right place at the right time most of the game. He can really turn into a formidable player for us, arrow is defintitely pointing up with him.

I think they're going to need the offense to carry them most weeks, whether it be scoring 27+ points or converting a lot of 3rd downs, controlling the clock and keeping the ball away from the opponent.

Of the winning teams in weak 1, 3 scored less than 24.

Of the losing teams, only scored 24 or mor.

The defense looks better improved compared to last season.
But it's only week 1. Need to see how consistent the Steelers can be this season
 
A good pass rush will always make the secondary look better. The Steelers led the league in sacks last year, due to scheme, over outstanding individual efforts. This year the effort is there and is reaping dividends, so we don't have to rely on overloads, or corner blitzes to get pressure and sacks, but they can still be sprinkled in for flavor.

Davis missed two tackles that lead to big plays and did not help out our corners. Bad game by #21
