I'm Head Coach of the Steelers

Been there and done that. Got the hat, t shirt and even a whistle. Loved every minute of it except for the PARENTS. This was in a small town. I didn't believe in participation trophies. If Johnny sucked, he didn't play. I finally got bored with the small town politics. We won some, lost a few and I would do it again.

I hear you on the small town politics part.
Which is why I could never get into coaching. They put up with a lot at the pee wee level.
I remember a ghetto chola mom throwing a fit cause her son wasn't a star(this was on my brothers team). Oooh I was ready to smack the painted eyebrows off of her. Lol

Congratulations on the youth coaching and YES you are right in how much GREAT it can be. I have coached multiple different youth sports (adult too) and by far my favorite was U10 as they wanted to learn and participate so bad but yet young enough to listen and NOT mouth back. One of the things I did about the parents (coaching) involvements was at the beginning of the season I set up a 10min meeting with each kids parents private meeting and explained how my system worked in player / team / sortsmanship / etc. I told them it also applies to them and they would be held accountable just as their child in the field of play. This seemed to work VERY well and I had Zero issues.

As for your STEELERS team, I applaud you and am on the BAND WAGON of sending your MLB over for a LOOKsie .

Salute the nation

been there, done that - many football seasons under my belt (and a few other sports too). The best thing you can do is teach the kids fundamentals and make it fun for them. Enjoy.

SteelerSask sucks!
Fire SteelerSask!

Just initiating you as a coach of the Steelers.

Coach em up and keep tabs on those stud defenders...could use some of them around here.
F'k that's awesome. Full laugh came out. Yeah parents are the trap, but I developed a sure fire recipe for those who want the big roles but can't do it. I say, I Don't care who does it. Just as long as it gets done. But we gotta know. So if little Johnny wants to be the running back, that is fine but I have to see how he does. We will run extensive Okie drill and he has to do well against the biggest and the strongest. Shuts it down. I avoid **** like awards and stuff. I know the six to ten who will play post secondary football. Its pretty easy to tell. They don't need a trophy to tell them they are great. They will have HS coaches slobbering on them when they make their High School visits this winter.

That is exactly what I do. Manager posted the contents of meeting on Team Snap. This is what it is, thei is what we do, this is what we expect. Don't like it. Get your money back now.

I disagree. From my own experience, and now watching my son’s high school team, several of the star players from the youth league have either quit playing because they got passed up on the depth chart or have accepted their role as reserves. **** changes drastically. Growth, competiveness, toughness. Sure a few of the youth stars are still stars, but several others had their shine wear off as time wore on.

My oldest is in grade. 11. To some extent I agree. There are always late bloomers and early stars that flame out. But of the guys he played with the ones who are on track for Canadian or small school US scholarships are the ones you would expect.

I will add to this that kids who I thought were future bench warmers turn into studs. I've seen lanky awkward kids grow into those long bodies to become beasts. I've seen short chubby kids hit growth spurts and HS weight programs and turn into absolute studs. This is why I focused on enjoyment of the game (those that love it keep playing) and fundamentals (so if they do grow or fill out, they know how to play).

The only awards I ever gave two plug nickles about were the academic awards we gave out. I coached a lot of kids over a lot of seasons in football and baseball. Only a handful got college offers. I don't know of any who made the pro's at any level (although I know a few who tried and got cut).

Steelersask will only be elite if he wins championship(s)

I am going to have to see more than just playoff appearances from him.

Another thing you learn is that D1 scholarships are just as much, if not more, about size as they are ability. Our starting RB was 5’8” 160 and he got a D2 scholarship, his back-up was as 6’0” 200 and got a D1 scholarship.

The only guy that I played with who ever sniffed the NFL didn’t start until his senior year in High School.

They may be 13 and 14 year olds. But we are the Steelers. And I got a **** load of Swag to wear. We got a stud running back, Middle Linebacker and a killer DE. If you love football and played the game some. Get out and coach youth or HS. It is a blast!!!!!

Do you wear cool shades and have that "deer in the headlights look?"
