Honestly, what are defensive players supposed to do?

I very briefly tuned in to the Rats-Bears game and within two minutes there was a 15 yd personal foul on a play where the defensive player literally hit the player in the ribs. I get it, the Shazier injury was scary for everyone but this new helmet rule is just ludicrous. You watch, every hit that even looks bad there will be laundry flying and fans are going to be even more upset than they were a year ago with the catch rule.

They are going to call anything that is close during the preseason to refine the rules and identify what they want called. What we can't have happen is for the refs to still be unsure what to call once the season gets started. For instance, the two textbook tackles that drew a flag should not be a penalty come Week 1. On a positive note, they already made a correct call on the new Jesse James rule.

It seems they do this every year in pre-season with a new rule. Flag the **** out of it, then back off somewhat when the regular season starts. Hoping that will be the case this year. Penalties are out of control enough as it is.

I hope ratings decline. Just let all 53 players dress, and make the hurt players sit out a game or two. Or fine them a lot of money without flags.

The pre-season is $H^T. The owners make the money, the players get peanuts. The only point of the pre-season is for the rookies and new players. So why not have an all rookie and new to the team game. That to me would be interesting.

they do it is called a preseason game

The NFL has definately peaked out. We have been witnessing the start of the decline and this rule will speed that up. I'm all for safety but this GAME isn't about safety. The injury trauma has escalated as equipment got better. Take away a few things to slow the game down or MAKE the players wear better equipment as it is out there. I truely don't know the fix other than going back to the HARD core football as we all know it and ALL players are educated to the long term effects and signed waiver claims.

Go back to the mid 90's rules and all will be ok.
But sports culture is really just another victim of the current PC culture.

It's not just football. All sports to an extent are suffering some type of watered down effect.
Along with the speed of the game and the constant micro analysis of every shift. Sports are no longer enjoyable for the hardcore fans.

The only hope is maybe the casual fan eventually loses interest and sports market to the die hards that were the backbone of the leagues.

I agree MTC but would like to add that maybe Rugby may be the next ticket. I know this dude that watches it all the time. I've watched a game or few with him and am just starting to get some of the rules and nuances also. I'm not saying it a direct replacement but could do in a pinch. I've been a DIE hard STEELERS first football fan forever. I'm also an athlete and have participated in many a many different sports via playing and coaching. For the first time in my life I am looking / exploring other sports for my main interest other than football. I started STEELERS football in 1968 and it's consumed my growing up years (do we ever grow up) and yet still to this day so I'm here for awhile regardless but even I, as many in my shoes, do have our limits. CherriO Good chap.

The product has nosedived with each season. The rules of engagement make it a shell of its former self. And whatever bs is going on up in fraudboro killed it for me years ago. It is what it is. I'm dreading watching this year with this helmet nonsense. Get your BC and tums stocked up.

Same deal with me. Not the same game I grew up loving. Difficulty looking forward to the season. Every rule change instituted has watered down the game to the point its becoming unwatchable.

Take away the advanced equipment...
Rugby has none.

I'll tune in. But the flag fest is gonna really kill the passion.
If the majority of the teams fail to adapt, I can see the refs allowing some leniency. Unless it's a pretty sketchy controversial call in prime time, then you know the fix is in

I've really gotten into Gaelic games. I love watching Hurling, and Kilkenny wears the same colors, so it was an easy shift for me to root for them. Gaelic Football is also a great action packed game to watch.

I just feel worse for defenders. All of them are starting to put working in their contracts, protecting them if they are ejected and suspended for rules within the game. Defenders have been **** on for the past decade. You can't touch receivers, you can't touch the QB above the neck or below the waist, you can't hit hard. The defenseless receiver hit is bullshit as long as you don't lead with the head, and that killed deep plays, by allowing average QBs to throw their receivers into dangerous coverage. Defense gets the majority of the fines, and make far less than the O skill players. Add this leading with the head rule, and I'll be surprised if defenders can earn a living anymore.

This is going to be the biggest **** show you've ever seen.

Except in Foxboro where all tackles by the home team will be perfectly fine.
