Steelers Sign Bucky Hodges

Anyone that went to camp last year, watched him in preseason games, or read Alex Koroza's camp diary, knew he was a lock. Want to know why he was a lock? He was running with the 1s in practice.

Really, everyone knew the day he was SIGNED he was a lock, big stretch there Myron.

Are you taking this site’s resident jester school of reading comprehension? Cope didn’t say everyone knew the day he was signed. Which was in fact a futures after his season ended. He explained anyone who saw him in camp or read the camp reports knew he was a lock. Hodges hasn’t done anything close to that.

Hey we all pull for the underdog in camp. It’s part of what makes camp intriguing. Unless there are injuries or someone else better becomes available it’s doubtful he makes the PS though.

You are wrong. Hilton was on the practice squad in 2016 and did not show the ability to be a starter. Seems Hodges started his first practice YESTERDAY and caught a TD pass. Plwease show me a SINGLE post from Cope on the day Hilton was signed with the Steelers or his first practice that he or anyone knew Hilton was anything but camp fodder.

Good thing Travis Kelce was such a great player out of college, oh wait, he spent a year on the PS with the Chiefs.

We all remember it, no need for Cope to show you ****.

You have a coach / poppish feel to you. Which makes me think Cope is right, as in pop has returned.

But with hardly any research

Mike Hilton: Hilton was the camp star a year ago,

Hilton was signed in 2016 and was a camp star the FOLLOWING year.

Hodges had an excellent pSPARQ score (138.8) at the 2017 Cobine, 3rd in a great TE class ahead of OJ Howard and Evan Engram and others. Not a stiff and he did well yesterday in his 1st practice.

Anyone who said they knew Hilton was going to be good when he signed and after his 1st practice is a liar. He was great in camp in 2017 but was not a highly regarded pickup or anything of note.

from OTAs last year

As far as sleepers go, Hilton has been the talk of the spring. Rave reviews came from media watching and his teammates, not too dissimilar to Eli Rogers’ story as a rookie. Two years ago, it was Terence Garvin who walked away from OTAs thinking, who is this guy?

Ramon Foster had the same thought. He wound up asking Colbert who that #40 was – Hilton – making play after play.

Hearing that, Hilton couldn’t help but chuckle, crediting good coaching and confidence in his ability for a successful start to the year.

Working behind William Gay in the slot, Hilton jumps in with the 1’s whenever Gay gets the day off. Size pushed him to the slot but Hilton plays like a man a full foot taller. Embracing the details, he’s a hard hitter who supports the run.

Plenty knew about Hilton before the NFL teams did. Your boy was just signed pop I get it, I won't knock Hilton for being on the scene earlier.

And nobody is saying Hodge has no chance.I remember him from the draft being WR - pass catching TE capable. But Steelers want their TE's to be able to block. That is what will make or break him.

Pop-a-MJ keeps changing the argument. Show us proof when he was signed? At the start of camp?

That's not how the process works. You get to see if players can make plays in camp. Hilton made plays all through is only camp and OTAs with the Steelers in 2017. That's how I and many others knew about him, and it wasn't surprising that he was the staring slot corner from watching him play preseason football.

He spent the 16' camp in JAX and a week with your team in NE. Kudos to our staff for picking him up at the end of 16' after Bellicheck was dumb enough to cut him in September. If they hung onto him he could have helped them win another SB with Butler being benched...

If only there was a way for a young player to show his abilities to the coaches and fellow players.....

You are the one changing the argument. Hilton was a nobody and was a camp sensation, no one knew when he was signed he would do jack ****. Hodges is an incredible athlete whose Combine test were at the top of his draft class. He has already started playing well in camp and is a Topmlin favorite. There was talk of the Steelers taking him in the 5th round last year and he was upset we did not take him as he had been on the phone uoth Tomlin earlier. He is a better athlete than any of the Steeler TEs and we shall see if he can show it in camp or on the practice squad.

Here is some enlightenment from the Steelers own website....

“PRO (16-5/0-0): Signed a Reserve/Future contract with the Steelers on January 24, 2017…signed to the Steelers' practice squad on December 13, 2016…released by the New England Patriots on September 13, 2016…signed to the Patriots' practice squad September 6, 2016…released by the Jacksonville Jaguars on August 29, 2016…originally signed with the Jaguars as an undrafted rookie free agent on May 1, 2016.”

Now you will need to read (carefully in your case) that Hilton was cut by Jax and the Cheats. He wasn’t on the roster until after the 2016 season via a futures contract.....

You trying to supplant Coach on this board? For a guy who didn’t even know how to set in a 3 pt. stance at his first pro practice?

This is a really curious signing. Other than the concussion a year ago and suspect blocking, is anything else wrong? Seems like he has a lot of physical tools for two teams to dump him so early.

There's no doubt about his receiving ability. The doubts are his inability to block with technique or even move a blocking sled.

Remember him from the draft, nice pickup in case McDonald is really made of glass

Size great, strength is garbage and IMO camp fodder. Can’t block and has a difficult time getting past NFL Middle LB’rs and Safeties. Great potential but weak minded IMO. However, we shall see since he is in our camp.

He’s a Virginia kid and Tomlin has a soft spot for them, but I don’t think he will supplant any starters without a major injury to one of them.

Someone who grew up in Virginia and have been a Hokie fan for a number of years I’m cheering him on. Came in as a QB and after a year switched to TE/WR. Very athletic and has great hands. His problem was he never really had a good QB. Never had one in Minnesota either. The biggest knock on him is of course he’s never been a very good blocker but not sure if that has more to do with his size coming out of college. But, to his defense he was never really asked to block in college and most of the time would line up as a WR. A lot of really good players jumped around before finally putting it together and being in the right place to grow. Hoping this can be the place for him.
