Is Mason Rudolph’s inconsistent passing a concern for the Steelers future?

One thing that drives me crazy is that these young quarterbacks all too often rely on the safe options in practice. I get that they're playing for a job, but even during 7-on-7 drills, which is pretty easy to hit a receiver or tight end, these QBs are just dumping the ball off the the running back in the flat. There's no risk taking at all.

That's because they can't process the play quickly enough. In a game the QB might have 3 full seconds to take a snap, drop back, set his feet, locate a receiver and throw it before he has to scramble or take a sack. On some plays 4 to 5 seconds to do the same thing.

Young players just don't know where everyone is. The more expired QB's know where they men are, and how to read a defense.

What irks me is the weak armed QB's that can't fit between players in zone ,and lack the velocity and range for deep outs and square in type of throws. Or the inaccurate type of Qb's that force punts on 3rd down. From what I've seen and read, Rudolph is a good 3rd down type of passer.

He plays out the year on the PS and Jones is allowed to explore FA next season.

That's a good point. Dobbs was inactive for all but 1 game (wk 17) so he would be PS eligible if he clears waivers.

It's a risk reward type decision and if designated to practice squad I hope he clears waivers. One thin though and it wouldn't be the first time this happened, injury / IR and yes I know this isn't a good cinerio but it is a viable option down the line if it gets to where we can't carry 4 QBs.

Dobbs won't clear waivers. Way too much upside. We know what we have in Jones. 500 ball, at best. Dobbs and Rudolph have tremendous upside compared to Jones.

Hopefully that translates to being able to beat off defenders like Ben does.

Everyone knows Jones is not long for this roster. However, I and probably they think he gives the Steelers the best three week option. Dobbs is a round 4 prospect with not much quality tape. He would have to be better tgan anotger teams three. There will probably a market for him I agree. Id imagine we will find out. This is why Ben was a little off put by the Rudolph pick. Not for him but the others

The one thing that gets me is for the last 6 or 7 or more seasons that's all QB's have to do against OUR D and they move UP and DOWN the field on us at will....or so it seems. Long drives which then keeps OUR offense off the field while tiring out OUR defense.
 
I just watched a highlight reel but damn he looked promising. I liked his delivery. Quick and direct.
 
I wouldn't worry about Rudolph's performance until he plays in actual preseason games. That will be more telling than any of these practices.
 
Pace is slowing down already and preseason hasn't even begun. I'll take it

And still, the sky isn't falling if he throws INTs. Look at Dobbs, terrible in the first preseason game last year, but improved each game and was a big reason why we won them.
 
If anyone saw laundry jones first two camps they would never ever be worried about a QB looking good in drills again... or preseason.... developmental guys are just that and qbs need to learn pro timing... thats why peyton manning threw a zillion interceptions his first year
 
My biggest concern with him is that he comes from the Big 12, where they basically don’t play defense. Mediocre quarterbacks can put up huge numbers playing in that conference.

Legitimate concern. What will make Rudolph a success is if he figures out how to beat defenses and playing with a high football IQ.

If not by ****** fundamental play then by the new version of football rules. DEFENSE has their hands tied and hearing about last night's helmet enforcement rule................ is about dead. NFL Now Flop League
