Just imagine Lambert,Lloyd and Harrison in that 4-3 defense. Mean Joe,Ernie,LC and White up front. Brings a nice smile just thinking of ambulances they'd have to keep on hand.
Awesome thought...but I don't believe players from that era could compete with the players of today.
Mean Joe was the heaviest Steeler at 275. Don't believe there was a Steeler offensive lineman that was over 260.
Heck, if Adrian Peterson or Earl Campbell played in the 50's and 60's they would crush Jim Browns records....so would Bettis, Walter Payton,..etc.
So would Barry Sanders...while Campbell and Bettis would merely beat off defenders, Sanders would juke those undersized slow white guys out of their jock straps.
It is a easily formula. Nutrition + Supplements of now + named player.
For those players old school players to have access to what they have access now, they would have been bigger, stronger, faster.
Look at Faneca, Mike Adams, or Nick Hardwick, etc.
how much body mass was lost after retirement.
Just give those old school players what these players have now, they would easily be able to compete.

The 70's era mental make up with today's knowledge of training, recovery and supplementation would make for some fun football.
Today's players are bigger, faster stronger no doubt, but it's from advancement in training and supplements.
It seems today's athletes despite the better athletic showing lack that solid mental discipline that the prior era's brought.
Different era. We're more aware about safety etc. So it's nature to approach cautiously.
Where as the Lamberts, Jim Browns etc, played with an almost reckless abandon. Imagine the nfl still playing like that today but with the current athleticism. May be too violent for live tv lol
The OL&DL guys carry 60-100 lbs more bodyfat nowadays. Guts galore. That's the biggest difference. Everyone has to be harder to move with higher mass. The training, nutrition and recovery may be better, but that fat is way way higher.
Faneca cut the fat and some muscle with it. Marathons will do that. Awesome for him!
