Falcons QB Matt Ryan to get $100 million guaranteed

Quarterback Matt Ryan has agreed to a five-year contract extension with the Atlanta Falcons, and sources tell ESPN's Chris Mortensen that the deal will make Ryan the first NFL player to earn $30 million per year.

The deal includes $100 million guaranteed, sources said.

Ryan, who will turn 33 on May 17, was entering the final year of a five-year, $103.75 million extension he signed in July 2013.

Minnesota's Kirk Cousins set the previous record for average annual salary ($28 million), followed by San Francisco's Jimmy Garoppolo ($27.5 million) and Detroit's Matthew Stafford ($27 million).

Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said signing Ryan to an extension was the team's top offseason priority. Owner Arthur Blank told ESPN that Ryan would be "compensated well'' after being named NFL MVP and helping the Falcons to the Super Bowl during the 2016 season.

"Matt is getting what he has earned and we all know the marketplace for a great quarterback," Blank said Thursday. "League revenues are up, club revenues, new stadiums and the players are the heart of the game. They're the ones on the field and they certainly deserve their fair share."

Ryan, the No. 3 pick in the 2008 draft out of Boston College, hasn't missed a start since December 2009.

He owns 20 franchise records and has thrown for more than 4,000 yards in each of the past seven seasons. He reached 40,000 career passing yards in an NFL-record 151 games and holds the league mark with a 64-game streak of 200-plus passing yards.

Ryan has completed 3,630 of 5,593 passes (64.9 percent) for 41,796 yards with 260 touchdowns, 126 interceptions, and a passer rating of 93.4 through 158 career games in 10 seasons. His regular-season record is 95-63. Ryan is 4-6 in the playoffs, with two NFC Championship Games and one Super Bowl appearance.

Blank said that Ryan has been "the model face of the franchise, a great leader and he has embraced our values. He has led us on and off the field."

Not all teams are so lucky.

"You always hope that when you use a high first round draft pick on a quarterback you hope he becomes the next Tom Brady, Peyton Manning or Dan Marino but about 50 percent of the quarterbacks taken high don't pan out," Blank said.

Right tackle Ryan Schrader called Ryan "the best in the league."

"I've looked up to him my whole career," he said. "I envy the player, leader, and warrior he is. He will be here to lead us to a Super Bowl victory in the future, no doubt in my mind.''

Blank said that the Falcons selected Alabama wide receiver Calvin Ridley because "when you have a guy like Matt, you want to build around him."

It just gets more stupid every year.

I agree Sask. Sorry but I just don't see where playing a game deserves that kind of compensation. That would be like me paying $100,000 for a TV so I can enjoy my free time watching sports.

Oops..I better shut up, that may be next. The NFL ticket is already beyond my means.

sure, it might be crazy high numbers, but it's simply where the market is at, it's where we've come to far, as far as advertising dollars, ticket revenue, merchandise sales, and the influence of players' agents are concerned. you're only worth whatever someone else is willing to pay you. millions upon millions of people don't tune in to watch a trash collector pick up people's garbage at 5 am on a Monday morning, hence, he's not making millions of dollars for doing it lol.

It's always what the market will give you and what people are willing to pay. Some parts of country I'd be hard pressed for $30/hr and in others $150-300/hr is a drop in the bucket. I personally think some things are nuts, but it is what it is. Get while the getting is good.

If you have a skill set in high demand like a professional blue chip NFL qb you're in a very small small group.

I just dont like the linkage where this guy gets this dollar figure and now this guy gets this much because he is our version of that player even if he has really done jack ****. Take Carr on Oakland or Cousins. Like **** until you win something to me you are mostly a journeyman.

30 million is about 17% of the cap. It looks like a lot of money but it's equivalent to making about 20 million in 2011

Dude ain't won ****. Madness.

Matty ice got the money now?
Yeesh

You guys should have heard the callers on the local radio sports talk show after M.Ryan signed that deal. 50-50% split on it being too high, He shouldn't have got it because he's not like Brady, or Brees, or Rodgers, What has he done lately, He's no Mike Vick! Plus recently his favored WR Julio Jones is looking for a new contract now. It has been reported that Jones is training now with former NFL WR Terrell Owens and Jones has taken down some photos he had on some social media website. Then you have some fans who thought the Team should have addressed the other players on the Team who's contracts are about to expire after this season too with Ryan's money.

Kind of get what you're saying but he has won some. Won an NFL MVP and if not for one of the worst collapses in Super Bowl history, he'd have a Lombardi.

What do you think our QB is going to want $$$$$ wise??? He sees BIG payday if he can hang on long enough for a new contract.
