Steelers release J.J. Wilcox after picking two safeties in draft
ESPN
4:25 PM ET1 Minute Read
The Pittsburgh Steelers released veteran safety J.J. Wilcox on Monday after selecting two safeties in this weekend's NFL draft.

The Steelers selected Terrell Edmunds in the first round (28th overall) and Marcus Allen in the fifth round (148th overall). The Steelers also signed safeties Morgan Burnett and Nat Berhe in free agency.

Wilcox, 27, was acquired by the Steelers in a trade last year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who had signed him as a free agent. In his only season in Pittsburgh, Wilcox appeared in 12 games (one start) and finished with 12 tackles, one interception and one pass defensed.

He spent his first four seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, playing in 58 games (38 starts) and recording 212 tackles, five interceptions, 15 passes defensed and two forced fumbles.

I thought he played really well in the game where he had the interception.

Wow with a quickness.

The Steelers created $3.125 million in salary cap space with the move.

Landry's gotta be feeling some tension right about now.

As to cut him before they see how Rudolph performs in camp? I would think Dobbs would be the bubble player being low on the totem pole. Landry at-least brings starting experience.

Trading Bryant and cutting Wilcox opens something like 4.1 Million-ish up in cap space after the rule of 51 adds two more minimum salaries. Don't think it's enough to sign all the Rookies but it's getting there.

12 tackles and a pick...ugh. What will they ever do to replace that production.

Dobbs will get an "injury" during preseason and get IR'd.

Landry Jones is as safe as a kitten near its mother. If something happened to Ben that ended his year. ****** season over. But if you need someone 2-4 weeks its Landry Jones.

Before the Rudolph pick sure. We will have to see how quickly Rudolph comes on to know if the season is salvageable if Ben goes down.

Wilcox was never used properly..

Tomlin seems troubled finding effective players for the secondary. When will his experience as a clever db coach shine through?

Landry Jones is not a bad backup QB....hes one of the better backups in the league. Hes better than Bridgewater, Simien, Kessler, Osweiler, AJ McCarron, Chase Daniels etc. Hes gotten us by in Bens absence. Hes at least able to keep us at or just above .500 ball

The way the league designed the rules in favor of the offenses, everybody has a suspect secondary unless you have one lockdown CB and a ballhawk S.

I can't figure out what happened in the Wilcox situation at all. They signed him to a FA contract, started him in a game in which he had an INT and looked pretty good overall. Then for some reason he quickly fell out of favor with the coaching staff and was never seen on the field again. I was wondering what the hell happened to him for the latter half of the season. I thought he was going to be a large part of the secondary after his start, especially with Mitchell's skill level obviously diminishing. Still have no idea what happened there, but it's damn weird.

I agree with supersteeler what the hell happened helooked like he was really going to contribute then nothing.... one of butlers problems seem to be his weird way of handling players.... one minute he’s rotating substitutions next minute playing players till their tongues were hanging out. Not having an adequate substitute for shazier having to bring a guy off the street cost us big time... Spence played horrible down the stretch... and we never really did see the multiple strong safety formations especially against pats double tightend formations... butler should be going down the road not wilcox.

Wilcox was not signed as a free agent. We got him in a trade with the Bucs.

My guess is that they re-sign him to a vet minimum deal. He is good depth.

I wouldn't count on them re-signing Wilcox. Last year they kept, what, 4 Safeties? Davis, Mitchell, Wilcox and Golden. This year, those spots are pretty much all sown up with Davis, Burnett, Edmunds and Allen.

Don’t forget Berne Buckeye. Yeah he’s primarily a ST, but he’s an emergency DB as well. Hopefully Dangerfield finds a way to stay. Always thought he was a good ST and back up safety.

If they sign him after June 1st... they can cut him at no cost. Simple way to protect against injury and he knows the system already.

They could keep five Safeties... they have many times. Edmunds, Burnett, Davis, Berhe and Allen... those five are making the roster. Wilcox would be protection against one of these going down.

They probably offered him a paycut at some point and he declined. There's no way he's coming back before at least attempting to get a job elsewhere(and getting cut).
