The point he is trying to make is that JL is, supposedly, a #1 receiver, but last year had 1 more yard/pass than Bell did as a PT receiver (a down year for both for this stat).

Overall, i think the results suggest that Bell is more important to offensive success than JL. However, regardless of all of that, the Clowns have the space to pay that and we do not. I didnt look at how it was structured, but we could do close and keep the cap hits at $10m-$11m/year, i think, for the first 3 years.
 
The thing is with the salary cap is some teams have so much room and pay crazy and essentially create a false market.

Which is why Bell will get paid .... in 2019 .... And not by the Steelers. Some team with a need/desire for his skills and a lot of cap room will pay him some ridiculous amount of money.

Ehhh.. Edge receiver is a bit of a stretch for Landry:

Jarvis Landry
2017 Yards per Reception: 8.8

Leveon Bell
2017 Yards per Reception: 7.7
 
I can understand why some guys balk at signing because the system does go against them. Namely RBs and TEs who have big receiving stats. The other part is that WRs are generally overpaid. Teams are comfortable throwing huge contracts at almost any WR with decent stats.

Jimmy Graham fought a few years ago to be categorized as a WR for contract. He was right. Why should the stats of a blocking TE factor into what Graham gets paid?

It really isn’t fair that Bell gets lumped in with average RBs that just run and catch the occasional dump off. RBs like that are a dime a dozen and the NFL pays them that way. But there is an elite tier of RBs who do it all, like Bell, Gurley, David Johnson. These guys should have a higher market value.

I don’t get why teams throw so much money at WRs. I’m not talking about guys like AB. He’s a true gamebreaker and deserves big money. I’m talking about giving a possession guy like Jarvis Landry that type of money. Giving a big contract to Randall Cobb, or Kenny Stills. They don’t seem ti have a problem giving big money to any WR with a pulse.

I should rephrase my original statement, I actually meant what you are saying. I meant as a Steelers fan it doesn't bode well regarding Bell's contract situation because he will likely want more money. I agree this works out in Bell's favor.

Can't disagree with this. I think part of it is teams are more comfortable giving WR's big money because they tend to last longer and be a bit more durable than a RB. The main knock on RB's is their top level of production is limited to only a few really good seasons before they become average or injury prone (Arian Foster). There's more risk there. Obviously there are some that last and perform longer than others but those are outliers and yes Bell was healthy last year but he's already missed significant time due to injury during his career and that tends to only get worse the longer you're in the league.

I also think teams overestimate a player's ability and the circumstances that made them great. Jimmy Graham had Drew Brees and a run and gun offense...not a surprise he struggled to put up similar numbers with Seattle yet Seattle paid him like they would get the same production. Or the Dolphins giving Wallace big money...Tannehill clearly isn't Big Ben so again not a surprise that Wallace has been very average since leaving Pittsburgh and not having a top 10 QB throwing him the ball.

I look at Landry though and he hasn't had much of a supporting cast his entire career yet is putting up really good numbers consistently so maybe given a better circumstance, he outperforms his contract. I don't think that will be in Cleveland though.

Landry is going up against other teams #1 or #2 corners.

Bell is going up against LBs DEs and sometimes nickel corners or safeties.

Receiving out of the backfield is not the same position as receiving from the sidelines.

All this talk about bell being a wr is pure non-sense. Bell is a good receiving back. Alot of bells catches are dump offs where he just leaks out and is basically uncovered. Bell is slow, but has a good quick burst. He has some shiftiness, but i would not say he has amazing change of direction. At best he may make an adequate slot receiver, but no chance he would be a number 1 or 2 WR.

That isn't the point. Every team has a WR going up against the #1 or #2 CB. How many of those teams have either their #1 or #2 WR getting 8.8 ypc? Would you be happy with that and give that WR a big contract? CAN he do better? He has, but not by a lot.

In 4 years, he has had two seasons with under 10 ypc. His best is 12.1 in one year and 10.5 in another. Hell, Bell had a year with 10.3 ypc.

So, while not being covered by the #1 or #2 CB, Bell also is catching balls at or near the LoS, meaning he actually has to get those yards rather than the ball traveling through the air for part of those.

All of this leads to the idea that Landry is NOT worth that kind of coin. As nitsuj says, MAYBE if he had a different QB throwing to him, but I dont know if he gets that in Cleveland.

Ward was a huge factor in the run game. The game was different then too.

Landry is a good WR but i don't think he's a gamebreaker. I would not have paid that much for him.

You are glossing over how rare it is for a RB to run WR routes. There are only a few RBs in the game who can do it. It creates a matchup problem for the defense because he will beat LBs and if you put a CB or safety on him then you just weakened your defense against AB and Juju.

There's a reason why Saquon Barkley is rated so high in this draft. It's his receiving skills that set him far above all other backs in this draft.

Just look at the % of the offense Bell is. I'm not saying i would actually pay Bell that much, but he can certainly make the case he deserves more than the RB franchise average.

If it wasn't for Peterson's ridiculous contract the franchise for RBs would be much much lower. He is already making over 6 million more than the next highest RB.

Bell is definitely involved in a high number of offensive plays, but the question is does he really need to be? I feel the Steelers way over use him. Most teams use 2-3 backs pretty consistently and effectively. We could pay 3 decent backs and still not total what Bell is paid. I just feel this team is not good with managing players when it comes to who plays when or where. You will be severely degrading the rest of the team of you pay an RB 2x the market value.
