LeVeon Bell doesnt get it...

I understand why Le’Veon Bell feels frustrated with some fans in Pittsburgh who want the team to pull his franchise tag or simply “run the wheels off of him,” and allow him to leave in 2019.

But he really needs to stay off of social media. Or at least, as Ben Roethlisberger does, hire somebody to do his social media for him.

It would save him a lot of trouble from posting stuff like this:

I get it. Nobody likes to have bad things said or written about them. And social media has made it possible for fans to have direct interactions with players like never before. That works in both a positive and negative direction, as this story by SI.com points out.

Bell got a lot of backlash for that latest tweet. And I get it. It was an ill-thought-out post.

But the flippancy at which some people think an All-Pro running back can be replaced and/or the comments they make about his future are sometimes just as cringeworthy.

• The Steelers are worth hundreds of millions of dollars. And Bell has made $14.5 million in his career, with $12.2 million of that coming last season. Of that $14.5 million, he’s probably pocketed about half of that once taxes, union dues, agent fees and everything else are taken out.

And he plays a position that, for ordinary players, has a shelf life of about three years in the league. He’s 26 and has perhaps four or five more years to do this as a living before he has to get on with his life’s work — which, sorry, won’t be in the music business.

I’ve seen too many players who played in the league for multiple years have health problems from their playing days, trouble walking, brain trauma, etc., to say that any player is being “greedy.” These guys put their bodies on the line on a daily basis. They risk life and limb every time they step onto a football field to entertain us.

Of course he deserves to get paid. And the deal he turned down both last year and this year would make him a very rich man, far richer than any other RB. I don’t see why it’s hard for people to understand that just because you don’t want the Steelers to kill their cap flexibility to match whatever Bell’s names price is means you think it’s “easy to replace him” or think he’s a “villain” or that he doesn’t deserve to be paid after what he puts his body through. None of these things are true. I agree with everything DK said, except that doesn’t mean I think Le’Veon should be able to name his price and destroy the team’s ability to build a team around him.

What if he said $20m? What if he said $30m? What if he said $40m? All of these points about what he’s earned in the past, what he puts his body through, short career for RB, etc. would still hold true - so where do you draw the line as a fan? Surely you have a line where you say “hold on, we can’t build a team if we pay him that” - don’t you? What if he wanted 100% of the salary cap? All those arguments DK (and some of you) made would still hold true. It’s just the Steelers would have 1 player while every other team has 53. So you can’t say you do not have a line, you just don’t know what line is because you like Le’Veon as a player. But here’s the thing - I like Le’Veon as a player too. I want him to be paid and I want him to take care of his family and have a long career and make lots of money too. But there HAS to be a line or else you can’t manage a roster. And I believe $17m (OVER 2x the next guy) is over it.

Has nothing to do with anyone’s personal feelings about Bell or how easy or difficult he is to replace. We won’t replicate Bell with one replacement. We know this. But come on we were the 20th rushing team in the league at less than 4ypc. You don’t think we can come close or better with a committee of younger guys, who combined make way less than $14m (let alone $17m), like both Super Bowl teams have? I mean who was the last SB winning team with a great RB? The Seahawks who were known for the Legion of Boom, who did have a great RB but had also drafted so well in recent years they were lucky enough to have their QB and several key defensive players all on rookie deals. CAP FLEXIBILITY. I mean come on. This love fest some folks have with Bell is understandable and I wish we could keep him at what he wants too, but what does it mean for the rest of the roster?

If you can actually walk me through a scenario where we pay Bell $17m/year without losing key pieces of the roster that we need to win a Super Bowl (or having to force them into a pay cut - hey these other guys have families too, remember?) - then I am 100% on board. Let’s do it. Let’s get a cap guy in there to break it down. I’d love to see

If we sign Bell under the franchise tender, I think the season is over before it starts. Cap constraints will prevent any significant improvement in the defense, which will have to depend on rookies to fill the gaps. What I will never understand is why we didn't use the non-exclusive tag that would have allowed Bell to at least explore how much he was really worth on the open market.

Bell’s cap hit under the tag is already counting. They have the potential veteran starters from the two FA they picked up. They will resign Boz and that will free up more room for cap space. Pitt is routinely always near the cap. Why the surprise that they are?

You'll have to excuse me if I don't fall into the sympathy trap that running backs have short careers, and Bell may only have 4 or 5 years left before moving on with his life's work.

Hello........how about investing just half of what you clear each year to support you in your golden years? And in his case that may be at 30 years of age.

Can't speak for anyone but me, but I would love to have 30 million or so in the bank to carry me through retirement.

Had he just signed the deal last season, he would've helped change the market for RBs, but turning down 6+ million more per season than the next highest RB and then bitching and complaining and asking for 17 so you're paid just as much as another player definitely isn't going to sit well with anyone

The dude is an incredible talent but I feel he is being immature. If you think you can get more play out the tag then test the market next year.

Of course some stupid front office will overpay for him and that drives the price for RB's up even more.

It's a lose lose for everyone even Bell because he'll end up in a Barry Sanders like situation where he never has a chance to win anything.

But hey, maybe he doesn't care about that, sure seems like he only cares about the money.

Will more money insure he picks up third and two or inside the ten yard he will score or catch every pass dropped off to him out of the backfield. He wants guarantees but he gives none in return but try to make the Steelers the bad guys here. He was offered more than any backs , he was taken under the wing in his suspensions by the Steelers he is adored by fans ( which in todays game counts zero I know ) yet he continues to point the finger every where else in his greed.

Lose lose? For everyone? Pitt has offered at least 13.5 even after Bell receiving the tag last year. He will have doubled every RB until Gurley and David Johnson gets their extensions. He goes to another team he isn’t winning anything. With this offense he has the best chance for a championship. Comparing Bell to Sanders isn’t a good example. Barry had NO ONE helping him.

Exactly. Also a few things I think. 1) Like I said before, I don't think he'll play real hard this year. He'll be like Mike Wallace and play at 75% not to get hurt. 2) He played every game last year which means given his injury history, he's due to miss 4 to 8 games again. I don't see the Steelers getting their money's worth out of him either way this year.

He has touched the ball more than anyone else.........his wear on his body due to that fact adds age to his football years.........He does NOT want an acceptable contract that pays way more than anyone else at his position................ He has been injured with leg injuries (they do catch up)......... He won't sign the tag and what advantage does that get him other than not being a team player (and don't give me that TC wear and tear because team coaches can evade that process), Does he have great talent YES, But he can also be replaced with talent that doesn't have that far of drop off................. It is a passing league. He won't sign but uses that as an excuse and in reality that is his way of holding the STEELERS hostage. The STEELERS are doing what they said they would do all along and that is try to sign long term or to get compensation out of him. There is NO villain and I think Bell was getting ahead of the name calling finger pointing. (He's starting to believe his rap music). As long as he is a STEELERS player I'll care but as soon as he isn't then I will give less than the 1/1,834th *****.....

Eh you don't give 100 percent and other teams see it, you are taking potential money out of your pocket. You play not to get hurt you can get hurt or benched. When you are tagged and refusing contracts you are betting on yourself to showcase well. In how much Bell wants, I am sure he won't do anything on the field to jeopardize that.

I hope you are right and that he gives 100% buit it's hard to swallow when he is chosing to NOT show up until the week 1 and combine that with all the who hollers associated with that. It took him till wee 4-6 to be game ready and this year he is a year older. I want him to be so successful we win a championship.

Let’s not forget that fact that Bell hurt his contract when he got caught smoking pot.

He’s good but he’s not great. And his antics have worn thin on a lot of people. He need the NFL a lot more then the NFL needs him.

Except that Bell isn't that bright and it worked for Mike Wallace. Besides, when has Tomlin ever benched someone for not putting out 100%? "We're gonna unleash hell, we're gonna hold people accountable, blah, blah, blah...." then trot the same lineup out there week after week.

And makes how much more than the 6-7 backs you are talking about?

I think most of the starting backs can do better than 4.0 per rush. Well actually over 25 of them did most of whom run behind inferior lines.

Goodness, you really are that dense. Let me first state that this is in no way "sticking up" for Bell; however, I just can't let an opportunity like this slip. How many times are you going to use Bell's one season of 4.0 ypc as his barometer? That's not a career number, Sally. And how many times are you going to ignore me pointing this out to you? It's reasons such as this why your "acumen" is not exactly celebrated 'round these parts.

If I'm Art II, I call LeMeon into my office and spit a little rap:

Yo yo yo, LeVeon!
Here's $14.5 mill for you to chew on!
We want you here for the long haul,
but we aint bending over the team for you, that's all.
Here's my last offer, so you better sign it quick,
cause if you don't, you can eat a dick.

BAM. Peace!

I like the idea of signing him to a non-exclusive tag and let him find out what the market says he's worth. Somebody wants to sign him for what he wants and give us two first rounders (won't happen), hey you go girlfriend.
