NFL institutes 15-yard penalty, possible ejection for lowering head to make hit

This may have corrected Shazier's tackling style if it was the the rule 3 years ago.

I think the whole intent is to stop players on either side of the ball from leading with the crown of their helmet. Almost all head/neck/spine injuries occur due to compression caused by the crown of the helmet making contact with an opposing force. Shazier was notorious for using the crown of his helmet on almost every tackle he made. Teaching players to see what you hit is nothing new and has been taught to pee-wee kids from day 1. Keep your eyes up as either a receiver, ball carrier, defender...etc. RB's can still get their pad height low without leading with the crown of their helmet. Receivers that catch a pass and immediately lower down to lead with their head cause as many bad hits as defenders that are flagged for head hunting. If you make it unilateral there is no issue. Watch old school football before you had full face cage masks and nobody led with their heads and it was as smash mouth football as ever. Someone has to protect the players or litigation and liability will be the end of the game.

This rule will be changed. RB's always put their head down when going into a hole or a pile at the line. They have to. What are they supposed to do - turn around and back in? WTF were they thinking?!?!?!

Yay! More toss sweeps on 4th and 1!!!

Just about 1/2 the plays ought to be 15 yard penalties, so Offensive Game plan won't be important. Jump Ball Joe may be relevant again.

The stupidest league in America just got even stupider. I didn't watch non Steeler games pretty much all season last year. Hell this year I just hope I can finish the season still watching Steeler games. I may not make it if it's a bad as I think it's going to be.

If they wanted to do this, start with just no lowering the head for any defender on any tackle. I'm fine with that rule and then if they wanted to test something else out, wait until these minor leagues start because no one is watching them anyway. Would have been the perfect place to test the other lowering the helmet rules.

Going to be impossible to officiate this rule. Total subjectivity. Chico is right. Instinctive human reaction to lower your head at collision. If anything Id say they could have looked at launching. As bad as I feel for Ryan, that was horrible tackling technique.

P.S. Id be hiring who I thought was the best teachers of safe contact. Whoever adjusts best and gets a gang tackling mentality will have a huge advantage.

Actually it's not. Watch a Rugby or Australian Rules Football game sometime and see that NOBODY lowers their head unless you have a desire to get KO'd. Lowering your head on contact is something that is learned by having a feeling of invincibility behind a helmet and face mask.

The Steelers have a pretty good one in Tom Bradley.

a player will be penalized 15 yards and potentially ejected any time he lowers his head to initiate and make contact with his helmet against an opponent

I figured I'd help you guys out a bit, since it seems no one wants to actually READ what was written. It's not penalizing players for lowering their head, it's for lowering their head to make contact WITH THEIR HELMET. It's just a more broad rule than leading with the crown of your helmet. Basically, don't initiate helmet to helmet contact aka, WRAP THE **** UP!

Well just so you realize it isn't the NFL starting the "minor leagues" you are referring to. I'm pretty sure these "minor leagues" would be happy to tell the NFL to go **** themselves,..........unless of course there is money to be made in doing so.

I want to see just one of you muthafuckas go out in pads and try to hit somebody with your shoulder without lowering your head. Can't be done. If you can do it you should be in the circus freak show.

Also.....could there be a more picture perfect time to have not one but TWO competing football leagues coming into existence. Well perfect for those leagues and horrible for the NFL. If they are smart they will make them both an exact replica of the NFL circa early 2000's. Fans will flock to them when they want to remember what actual football looked like.

Safe contact is based on Rugby Tackling. Ive coached it for the last 5 seasons. Ive been to at least 5 clinics as well. It does work and it is safer but it is predicated on some things that if you watch rugby you also know:
It is difficult to defend every blade. You will get some guys having to stalemate for help as opposed to dropping a guy.
You have to live with wrap and torque or wrap and gator role which produces extra yards.
An NFL running back or wide receiver is a different animal then most rugby players. These guys cut on dimes. If you are not in perfect position it will be hard not to launch and knife which makes up a significant amount of NFL tackles. Pretty hard to have eyes to the sky when you launch and knife.

I dont know Coach Bradley. I watch college guys tackle. Tgey tackle pretty much the same as the NFL. The guys who have taught the clinics Ive been at coach University. The games I go to dont seem to highlight it. It is difficult at high speeds. Honestly the best at it was the Seahawks. Most clinics use their videos to highlight the techniques and you can see it in the games.

Looks like Burfict's career is over...

That right there is truth comedy.............................the fact burfdefect tain't going to be able to tackle................and his career is over because of it, that or being ejected from so many games they'll start shoting him out of a cannon.......

Keep high and group arm tackle. They've already been doing it for a good number of years. Should be an insane amount of yards and big plays. Big scores! Off season conditioning should focus on creating giant arms and grip strength to really tug on those jerseys.....sarcasm.

Another rule to have each officiating crew try to call. If they call all the heads leads at end of seven hour game their will be no players left on the field. The officials can't get straight the rules now and we all seen where the catch rule got the officials. This is just another one going full speed they will call what they think it is.
