Who don't you want in round one?

1 ) Qb Lamar Jackson. Ben is on record saying he wants to play for three more years. 2018 is not the year to pick a QB in round one, 2019, or 2020 would be better. I also think Jackson's mediocre accuracy and passing skills, combined with a thin frame and his playing style means he'll disappoint or get hurt. I do hope Jackson in on the board; he's the perfect trade bait for teams that didn't pick a QB early in round one. I'd trade Pick #28 for a high 2nd and 3rd. Or pick #28 for a mid 2nd, 3rd and 5th.

2 ) ANY Tackle, Guard, Center, Wide Receiver, Tight End or Outside Linebacker. No one we pick will start at OL or WR. While Tight End is intriguing, I like what I saw out of MacDonald late in the year, and James is an adequate backup. Rushing the passer was not our problem last season, so an edge OLB is not a priority in round one. The chance for a P or K in round one is absolutely zero.

The BPA argument works best earlier in round one, by pick #28, many players have close to the same grade at different positions. I am hoping for S, CB, ILB, DT/NT in round one. The defense needs the help and there should be 4-6 targets on the board when we pick.

I did not mention RB, but if the Steelers opt to rescind the tag on Bell, or Bell opts to sign the tag seeking a trade, then this positon is in play.

Even though Ben says he wants to play 3 more years, he might not hold up that long.

Ben was injury free last year. He's not running like he used to, and the OL is very good at protecting him. I think he'll be fine in 2018. 2019-2020 is a better time to pick a QB. If you want a QB in 2018, its Jackson in round one, or maybe Rudolph in round two. I do like Rudolph, but these Big 12 defenses are mostly Swiss cheese and he was hurt for the senior bowl. Big, durable, accurate, smart... I'd be okay with the pick in round two.

Gotta disagree with you on OLB Coach. If a stud pass rusher falls, I seriously consider taking him. Dupree ain't getting it done.

We'll see if the Steelers pick up the 5th year option on Dupree. The top pass rushers will be gone by pick #28, I think. The defense has bigger problems than Dupree. If a top 15 pass rusher falls, I'd say maybe OLB.

ILB, S, DT/NT to me are more of a need than OLB.

I find it highly laughable those who are opposed to taking a QB at 28. Because those same ones will be bitching and blaming that we have no one ready to step in for Ben when he retires. I have no problem taking a QB if they like someone. You cant predict when or if you will have a chance to grab one.

I dont know when the deadline for this is, but I hope it isnt until the end of the year, or close to it, for him to show some more. I think he has what it takes, but needs some better coaching.

With the two key FA we recently signed I now think NT has moved up a little. We still need ILB / S / NT /

If Ben said this was his final season, I wouldn't want to take Jackson. No way they should take a QB in round 1, get someone that will actually play and contribute this season, I don't care about 3-4 years down the road right now.

the thing with OLB is that after Chubb it's pretty much similar talent but not 1st round talent, any of the rest after him could be picked in the 2nd or 3rd easily, that's why I agree it won't be OLB in the 1st, but not because it isn't a position of need.

Who else I don't want? any ILB that isn't Smith, Edmunds, Evans or VE. And even the last two are a bit iffy.
I do want Safety Reid in the 1st and of course DT Vea

I think the FO has like 12 days left to make a decision

I want a player from Bama. Payne, Harrison or Evans. I could live with Van Esche. If tgey went best running back Id be ok. No qb thanks.

Good for you, laugh all the way. This isn't the year for a QB as our first pick. We are to close and have bigger needs and at 28 the cream isn't there.
When we pick in the top 15 following a season removed from our consecutive two SB wins....... then yes, 1st round.

Im not saying it is..i want BPA.. After what theyve done in free agency they can do that. Two super bowl wins huh? Lol you dont believe that. I thought you were firmly in the Tomlin willl never win another super bowl camp. There isnt any ILB or Safety who can be taken at 28 who can replace Shazier fully or start over Burnett unless Tremaine Edmunds Roquan Smith or Derwin James falls. So there is nothing wrong if they they think QB is BPA at 28. No position be off the table. RB should be on the list too.. There are other linebackers in the second or third and safeties too. If they like Jackson or Rudolph like that i say take them if they are the higher rated

I would ratger they suck for a couple years and get a top guy at QB then have a good transition with a lesser player ready. If a guy is there that you would draft at the top, fine. But other than that you are reaching.

Lol we know damn well that wont be acceptable to most around here. Pitch forks would be out in abundance

If they won a SB with all their talent cool shades could stick around for the lean years as they get a new qb. If they fall short good time to transition anyhow.

Haha.

People were flipping out when with a couple of 8-8 seasons. But now theyre pretending they would be OK with being 'Browns-level' awful for a year or two?!?

******* hilarious

Just don't see us taking a QB in Rd 1.....I do see us using the pick for "D"....it has to be.......

Let NO ONE ON THIS SITE forget how we got torched for 45 in our final game...................

But a healthy Tuitt and Hargrave along with better play from whomever is replacing Shazier and better play from the safety position will go along way.. our issues can be fixed with what we have right now IMO. Thats not saying we dont need help the more the merrier. If Burns Davis Watt Hargrave Dupree improve we have a good shot. IF bostic is an improvement over Spence and co trying to replace shazier we are better. A healthy tuitt. Havent even mentioned Sutton and Brian Allen who they are high on.

Sutton showed something. I wonder if he can challenge for a starting job? Maybe.

I do not think Allen is suited for coverage as a corner, but I think he could make a good safety prospect if the Steelers try him there.

Dupree will be moved to the left tackle side, which might help him a bit defend vs. the run as Right Tackles tend to be better run blockers. At the same time, this move could enhance Watt's value in coverage as more passes are to the right side then left. Watt should be able to get more pressures and sacks from the right tackle side as well.

We'll see. I still do not trust the middle of this defense. NT/DT, ILB, and S. I would be happy if the first round pick was spent here, and we go back to these areas in round two, or three. The time to pick a RB might be round two or three. Conner was a good story, but I wonder if the poor guy can stay healthy in the NFL.

Please say NO to Rahsaan Evans. He is hiding his desk regarding running a 40. Also, there is zero chance he stays as clean behind the line as a pro as he he was able to do on an uber recruited Alabama team. Say NO.

I am starting to worry about Evan's 40 time and durability. When does he plan on running a 40? For now, I prefer Vander Esch over Evans.

Tomlin Says Steelers Scouting Of QB Draft Class Again This Year Is ‘Prudent Business Practice’

BY DAVE BRYAN MARCH 26, 2018 AT 01:59 PM

The Louisville pro day will take place on Thursday and it sounds like Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin will be present for it and perhaps even general manager Kevin Colbert as well. Tomlin admitted Monday at the annual league meetings that he’ll be attending that pro day to mainly scout quarterback Lamar Jackson and perhaps even have dinner with the former Heisman Trophy winner.

Tomlin and Colbert also previously attended the Oklahoma State pro day a few weeks ago where they spent a lot of time scouting quarterback Mason Rudolph. On Monday, Tomlin admitted to members of the Pittsburgh media that the Steelers are ramping up their process of scouting quarterbacks ahead of drafts the past couple of years because of the advancing age of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

“It probably goes back beyond two years,” Tomlin said Monday in Orlando, FL, according to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “It’s prudent business practice. When a quarterback is in his 30s, you better know what the market looks like, you better take yourself through the evaluation and stacking process. Whether or not you’re a true player in that market or it’s a dry run, Kevin and I have taken that approach the past couple. At some point it’s going to be real and maybe it’s this year.”

Even though Roethlisberger announced immediately after the 2017 season ended that he would be returning for the 2018 season and that he hopes to play at least three more seasons in total, the Steelers appear to be open to possibly drafting yet another quarterback this year after selecting quarterback Joshua Dobbs in the fourth-round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Should they ultimately wind up drafting one this year, odds are pretty good it would be either Rudolph or Jackson as those are the two most likely to still be on the board come the Steelers 28th overall selection in the first-round.

While in Indianapolis for this year’s scouting combine, Colbert talked about being intrigued with this year’s quarterback draft class that includes not only Rudolph and Jackson, but even higher-ranked prospects Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Baker Mayfield and Josh Allen. On Sunday, Colbert was asked to give his thoughts on how so many good quarterbacks in this year’s draft class change the way the draft process works not only for the Steelers, but the other 31 NFL teams as well.

“Well, it’s an unusual season,” Colbert told Missi Matthews of steelers.com. “I mean, we go back to Ben’s season, when really you had three potential Hall of Famers drafted in Ben, and Eli Manning and Philip Rivers and that was an usual occurrence. It’s a cyclical deal and every so often it presents itself and I’m not saying this year’s group are Hall of Famers, but I do think this year’s group is as deep as it’s been in a long time.

“So, it not only gives you an option, but it also gives other teams options and if your not interested in taking a quarterback, it will help you get a player because other teams will be taking quarterbacks and it may flush some guys down to us that maybe if those quarterbacks weren’t available that we wouldn’t be able to get.”

Will the Steelers ultimately draft another quarterback this year, or is this just them doing more due diligence? It’s hard to say for sure but both Tomlin and Colbert are once again giving the appearance this offseason that they’re open to drafting yet another quarterback this year. We’ll find out for sure in a little more than a month from now and should they ultimately draft another one, at least we won’t be able to say that we weren’t told it would be a possibility.
