After a loss like that and the SB ends ( thank God in a Pats losd) I hybernate from football. Anger subsides and Im able to rewatch and try to objectively watch what went wrong. Obviously the start was terrible. Main thing I could see as it moved on was the play calling binded them into tough choices on fourth down. The toss was ridiculous. The other was an ambitious throw to Juju. It was PI or holding at the least. But a little to difficult of a throw.
There was a 2 series window at 28-21 3rd quarterwhere if they scored I honestly believe they win that game. They ran a screen to MacDonald for a big gain. The team was surging. Then it was a short run, short check down to Bell and Bens arm hit on third. Punt. They got the ball back later on the dwflected punt, 1 more inch and that would have been a block not a deflection. Then it was 4 plays and turnover on the Juju no call. I think that was where the game was lost. Those sequences.
The defense forced third and medium so many times and just couldnt finish on third down. He stood there for 4-5 steamboats. Watt swiping at his throwing arm just missing twice.
Bottom line defense couldnt get it done. Every f'n time the offense turns it over (all season) its a TD. And in the moments when the offense could have seized the game they were not quite.

I recently rewatched also. I almost think as bad as we need a inside backer, we go nose tackle in the 1st. we need to be able to stop the run.

I agree with your observations but sadly I think the game was lost well before they took the field.
I really believe this team was not 100% focused on the team they were about to play, but rather on the next opponent.
That’s been the theme of this team the last 10 years so why should a playoff game against a so called inferior opponent be any different.
I keep always hearing the best talent here and they can beat any team. Then how do you lose to the so called inferior team not once but twice in the same season on your field no less? They actually were getting the hell beat out of them in the playoff game.
No, you can have all the talent a team could ever want, but you must know how to utilize that talent.

And anyone who seriously thought they were inferior was absolutely joking themselves. Their qb and receivers were but they had the exact team (rugged defense and running game) to make life miserable. So long as their qb didnt hurt them. They simplified and capitalized on mistakes. EVERY TIME.

The Steelers are the inferior team from head coach on down. They out played us plain and simple. They out strategized Tomlin. That was the easy part. We need more than a couple defensive players to win in the playoffs. We need a head coach that is up to the challenge.

It was a replay of the first meeting. A physical beat down of the defense. Having Shazier would not have changed the outcome.

From what I saw, the only difference between winning and losing that game was spotting them 6 points on offense.

The turnovers hurt in terms of the margin of defeat. No doubt, but a team cannot allow a Blake Bortles-led offense to come into its stadium and score five touchdowns.

The Bills and Patriots did not really have better overall defensive personnel than the Steelers, yet they both did much better jobs against the Jaguars in their playoff matchups.

It comes down to coaching and the Steelers lack it in many respects.

Vea from Washington will be long off the board. Payne from Alabama is projected early to mid 20s. I dont think they can move up. But if he falls I think they have to seriously consider. A three down NT that owns the A gap makes life easy on the ILBs. Only problem is who plays the passing downs at ILB. Watt? I love his athleticism.

Huh....

Hurt the margin of defeat? You mean by giving them more points than the margin of victory? Yeah. Freaking genius.

I knew Tomlin screwed up the minute he called for the fumble to lead to the TD. And then to call for an INT on our end of the field?!!

It came to me about the time an undisciplined player belittled a locker room door...............

Salute the nation

Even with the turnovers, the Steelers would have won that game with even a slightly better performance from the defense.

After the slow start, the Steelers' offense pretty much had its way with the Jaguars' defense.

Except for the two fourth downs. But that was coaching not the offense that was having its way with the defense

Huh.......what? Thats exactly what they did? Up until midway through the third quarter he was under a hundred yards passing. The Steelers just couldnt force the Jags to make Bortles win the game. They took shots when they got turn overs and hit them. They had a careful game plan with their QB play. For sure.

Agreed, this has been a problem since Hampton retired. As for the game, we were handicapped by distractions and bad coaching as well as a leaky defense.

A team with a great defense and a great running game is a difficult match-up for any team. Beating them requires a pretty straight forward strategy: 1.) Get a quick lead, 2.) Take care of the ball.

The defense blew number one. Once the Jags got the 7-0 lead, they were more than happy to lean on the running game. And while our run defense was pretty good all year (Top 10), the Jags run offense was elite.

But the offense, and particularly Ben, blew number two. I know BB led a herculean effort in the 2nd half- but that does not excuse him from being reckless with the ball during the 1st. By giving Bortles a short field, you limit the opportunities for him to make a mistake.

This was very much a "Team Loss", and both the offense and the defense did not hold up their end of the bargain.

But we scored 42 points

But we didn't plan right for them and were not focused. We should have focused more on stopping the run, forcing Jacksonville to beat us via medium to deep passing. But we didn't. Wasted one of Ben's best playoff games.

A bad home loss, and no need to comment on the boneheaded early onside kick. Tomlin is 3-5 in his last eight playoff games, 3-6 if you include the super bowl loss to the Packers.

Yeah your right the coaches should of focused on the run more. That would of stopped the players from being PHYSICALLY DOMINATED at the line of scrimmage. If the only the coaches had focused more. Yes we wasted one of the best games playoff games of bens career. If only the coaches hadnt insisted he give the ball to the jags twice imagine how much better it would have been..

Even more of a reason to commit the 8th man in the box. Take away their running game, and they are NOT outscoring us. The strategy and game time adjustments here were lacking, Antdrewjosh.
