Ryan Shazier is on the books for $8.7M this year.

As he's not going to play this year is there anything in the CBA that means we don't have to count that figure against the cap? Or is it just bad luck and anyone on IR also counts against the cap?

We've known for several months that he gets completely against the cap. Nothing they can do.

They cant sign him to a 2-year contract and put that in signing bonus to reduce the amount? a few million?

Nope. Because it's his 5th year rookie contract option. It all counts on the current year it was optioned. Its in the CBA. It was posted somewhere on the board that signing Ryan to an extension when he is on IR may be considered a circumvention of the cap and a violation of the CBA. Not to mention open up a brand new can of worms. It's why Dallas and Washington got fined big time.

Ahh..makes sense. Seems to be a pretty big loophole.

I don't think I'd call it a loophole. More of a situation not anticipated when the new Rookie scale was implemented. It penalizes a team due to an injured 1st round player on their rookie contract who was optioned a 5th year. I wouldn't be surprised the new CBA clarifies this scenario and allows more latitude for the teams salary cap since the player isn't considered an active player.

One of the ESPN dudes was actually talking about the Steelers possibly extending Shazier due to his cap hit this year. He said it comes with obvious risks but he sounded like they could reduce his cap hit.

If that is possible, what happens if he retires in a year or two because he can't come back and play? Doesn't that void the remainder of his contract other than the signing bonus that would then hit the remaining years of what the contract would have been.

I'm not a cap guru but we are in cap hell with tagging Bell and Shaziers hit. If they can do something there and even extend Ben now, they should have done it so they can get help at ILB and/or S. The chances of them getting legit starters for this year at both positions has to be at best 50-50.

Don’t know who at ESPN would state that. 5th year options are guaranteed for the option year. That’s why the rookie scale only allows 1st rounders the option. To create an extension it would need to be an active roster player. I don’t recall, or haven’t found record of an extension given to a player already IR’d. KC did mention at the combine they were waiting on the designation for Ryan from the NFL offices. So possibly something is in the works. I thought something happened with Utley for Detroit but that was well before the current FA model.
