The Steelers signed Alejandro Villanueva to a new contract last year on the eve of training camp. Today, he helped the team by moving some money around to save some cap space. Steelers restructuring LT Alejandro Villanueva’s contract. Expected to save close to $4 million in cap space by converting 2018 money to signing bonus. […]

Wonder how much they are under the cap now ?

Heard they were 2.8 million over the cap prior to this, so they definitely have some more restructures to do.

I thought they were some under the cap...

You may be right. I think I heard that wrong, I think they were 2.8 under prior to this. Apologies.

Prior to Villanueva's contract restructure, the Steelers were $2,838,985 million under the salary cap, per Over The Cap. #Steelers

Probably about 5.7 mil under now. Approx 10.7 if you add Mike Mitchell's contract...

Getting very nervous that nothing official has come out about Mitchell being released, as far as I've read??? Only release of note has been Gay.

Unless I missed it?

....I hope I just missed it???

He was informed of his release today by Colbert and Tomlin. He's going to test the market before signing cheap back here.

That's now close to $28 million in restructures this year (that we know of). I believe that's the most ever by the Steelers. Had $25.9 in 2012. https://twitter.com/JFowlerESPN/status/973668760304455681

NO cap guru here so I was wondering if that figure below the cap included BELL's tag money??

I thought that I read somewhere that in order to impose the TAG one had to be cap compliant. Am I right???

Man they are really going all in to win the next few years. all this restructuring is great for us this year but we are going to go back to being in cap hell.

well, we'll be paying a QB in a rookie contract so there's that

We went through some of that not to long ago, we stayed COMPETATIVE but not over the hump COMPETATIVE. Had to play players past their expiration date. HAD worse OL IN TEAM HISTORY....

Yes the tag counts against the cap like any other contract, much like RFA tags that were handed out to Boswell/Chick.

We are cap compliant with Bell's tag, we were $2.8M under. I'll round to $3 since there are varying reports.

$4M from Villa puts us at $7M
$5M from Mitchell puts us at $12M
$1.75M from Gay now we have $13.5M

I was never a big proponent of cutting gay, since if he moved to safety, he was still pretty cost effective at $2.38M. Looks like we're keeping Wilcox over Gay. Wilcox costs $3.8M and would give back $3.125M if he's cut. That would have been a money move.

Still at $13.5M we have $10M to sign who ever we want in FA, and the rest for the rookie pool.

Wilcox hasn't shown anything to own those 3,8M. Rather pair that and Gay's money and find a real upgrade, then you draft a top Safety and you are ready there, Dangerfield could be your 4th S

that leaves 6-7 millions to find a decent ILB and even a burned out WR for depth
