Steelers Negotiating with Bell; Personal Reasons Caused Late Arrival

Sorry I’ll pass. He’s good, but he’s still not a game breaker like a few other RBs. His demands are way too high for a RB with a very short leash.

If they sign Bell long-term his cap hit in 2018 will be much lower. Say he signs a 5 year contract with a 20 million signing bonus.
The bonus hits 4 mil per year. His salary in 2018 might be 4 mil, so 4+ 4 = 8 mil cap hit in 2018.
True, but will he sign a contract with 20 million guaranteed?

completely agree, for 20M he'll rather sign the tag and get 75% of it, just one year commitment and then can sign a big contract and make 40M between 2018 and his new contract, guaranteed

yeah, he can get $12m+ guaranteed this year and whatever someone else would pay him next year. Guaranteed money has to be over $24m, I think. Didn't they offer him $26m-$30m guaranteed last year? I thought this last year's tag, plus this coming years would be $26m, but the tag seems to have actually gone down for next year.

Maybe, seeing that no otehr RB's are getting $12m+ offers will make him rethink his WR money. Although, it appeared he actually was running some WR routes this year rather than being a dump off man.

if they offer him $30m guaranteed, that could be 5 years. $4m/year for the first two years, $7m/year for the next two and $whatever for the last year. A $26m signing bonus gives him $30m next year at a cap hit of less than $10m. A $30m signing bonus gives him $34m next year with $10m cap hit, right?

Is there some minimum of the guaranteed money that has to be as annual comp rather than bonus?

Certain incentives can give him bonuses that aren't salary cap items, right? I think those are things that aren't, necessarily, likely to happen, i.e. $10m bonus if you gain more than 10 yards per game. Something like "lead the league in rushing yards" I'd assume these are standard in a lot of contracts, though.

Some of yinz better get ready. He will be signed to a long term deal. Look for almost an identical deal to AB.

He's not the #1 back in the league though. You HAVE to get that out of your head. He just runs more often than any other back in the league.

Please.

It's not that some of us don't want him here, I'm pretty sure everyone wants him here if you take the money out of it, but we just scored 42 points in a playoff game and lost because our defense is slow and has a huge hole in the middle

We'll know soon hopefully

Le’Veon Bell: Steelers have set February 20 deadline for doing long-term deal

Bell told Jeremy Fowler of ESPN on Thursday that this is precisely what has happened. The deadline set by the team is February 20, and Bell said he’d like to get a deal done by then, too.

“That is definitely the goal,” Bell said.

Bell also said that negotiations can continue if they don’t hit their goal.

The date of February 20 wasn’t randomly selected; that’s when the window opens for applying the franchise tag. For Bell, the tag would result in a one-year guaranteed salary of $14.56 million, a 20-percent raise over his 2017 franchise tender of $12.1 million.

Serious question here, since I don't know the answer. If Shazier cannot come back and were to retire, would we get that cap space back?

Not to my understanding. It's fully guaranteed. Just like in baseball.

I believe you are correct. And, that is what makes signing Bell, as much as many want to, that much more of a bad business decision. We will have to rely on the draft to pick up a starting ILB, a starting FS to replace Mitchell (who must be cut to make room for Bell) and a 2nd ILB for some depth. Then we have to hope everyone else on the D improves from this year and no one gets hurt.

th

Nay, not really. We can still go after free agents....right ?

th

Well OK...maybe a little

signing bell would lower his cap hit as others said, making room for a FA trading, we have a 3 year window, onceBen is gone who cares if he we have cap room for the next two years? we will be rebuilding

Where are you guys getting your numbers? It was reported he wanted 15-17 Million per year, LAST YEAR. What makes you think he takes 1/3 less THIS YEAR?

Yeah exactly, and I don't know if we can afford to franchise him and take a cap hit of 14 million for this year.

Steelers aren't trading him to Cleveland.

Why not Indy then? Save 12-17 million and draft Barkley if possible. . Also, Bell flat out lied to the fans saying he did not flunk a drug test when he knew he did. So take his word with a grain of salt.

Don't stop beating your drum. I'm thinking if you keep at it ......it just might actually happen no matter how improbable it is of ever actually happening.

I thought next year's cap hit was a touch lower than last years. $12m or somesuch
I'm not sure, I thought this past years was 12 million, if we franchise him for this upcoming season, his cap hit jumps to 14.6 million

It's 14.7mil this year.

Huh..that is what I originally thought, but then saw something which said it was less than last year's. I didn't think it could go down. I must have been reading 2017 estimates and didn't notice the date.

Thanks. That changes what you need to give him for Guaranteed money then, but you can, still, get his cap hit well under $14m with a contract.

Yeah that's why I think its either a contract or nothing

you could bump his guaranteed number by $5m and decrease annual by $1m each year and he gets $35m up front with a $10m hit in 2018?

If he doesn't want 180 million as a signing bonus. He IS the greatest football player to ever step on to a field of play and warrants that kind of money.
