How can we be simultaneously so adept at assembling offensive talent, and equally bad

At finding defensive talent?

Seriously, what gives?

I understand not having 50 in there is a nightmare we may never wake up from and one of the worst possible outcomes imaginable. But let’s get real here. This team is absolutely brilliant at finding offensive stars. We are loaded at every position!

And yet somehow we are just as bad at finding defensive players as we are good at finding offensive players. How can this be? Even the guys who are supposed to be our best, Cam and Tuitt, were completely invisible today.

My intuition tells me that it cannot simply one big coincidence. It’s impossible that we just miss year after year in the draft and free agency and just have a collection of **** players over and over again. No.
This is not reality. If it were just a handful of busts here and there, you can blame individuals. But when every single player on your defense is bad, and it’s like this throughout the year, then you have to look at the men who are charged with organizing them, developing them, and strategizing for them.

When did Mean Joe retire. think Joe was a hell of a player scout for the Steelers on the defensive side.

People constantly fail to realize Roethlisverger is among the best to EVER play the game.
He makes EVERYONE look good. When he's out, Landry and Vick did NOT make everyone look good.
But, according to Elfiero, Jones is as good or better.
Me... I wish Roethlisverger would quit. It's too painful watching Tomlin et al. do the clown **** each season.

When this new generation of players came up, he called it quits. It’s a me, me, me player now that he couldn’t deal with.

My sense is we need a complete overhaul of defensive coaches, from top to bottom. That would be a good place to start. Some new voices and fresh ideas are badly needed. Finding an immediate replacement for Mike Mitchell is next up as well as fortifying the LB corps, especially on the inside. This defense wilted in a terrible way last night, it was tough to watch.

But Tomlin was a db coach. Tomlins roots are on the defensive side of the ball.

Exactly why he should be given an opportunity to build a staff from scratch, as opposed to working with a bunch of LeBeau holdovers and ex-Steeler players turned coaches.

Dunno. Been asking myself the same question for a few years. Was just thinking that we had two high draft picks at LB that weren't even offered a second contract (Worilds and J. Jones).

He's not a second year coach that inherited this. This is HIS shitshow! Good God, what will it take for you guys to finally see through Tomlin's bullshit????

Is not the entire defensive coaching staff holdovers from Lebeau's tenure? I'm trying to think of even a single coach Tomlin brought in from the outside these past few years.

How long has Tomlin been head coach? So you're saying he's had NO say in the coaching staff during that time? Who made the decision to promote Butler? For crying out loud, doesn't your argument make Tomlin even WORSE??

So are you saying tomlin had no choice in his defensive coaches ? This was his choice to keep these guys as far as I know.

Who knows how much pressure was applied internally for Tomlin to keep things intact? It is the Steelers way afterall. He did it when he came onboard, kept LeBeau and the whole system in place. And yes, it was Tomlin's decision to not rock the boat and promote Butler and keep the Lebeau staff intact. All I'm saying is it may be time for a more serious upheaval on that side of the ball. And I'm not making excuses for Tomlin either, he owns this shitshow as much as anyone.

I just want to see this defense improve and having Butler, Lake, Olsavksy, Porter et al around is not going to bring about required change. Even legendary John Mitchell may be eyeing retirement, you'd think. He coached up some great Steelers lines, but who knows how efficient he can be from this point forward. So I'm calling for massive changes to the defensive coaching staff. I hope the FO allows Tomlin to do that, if he's so inclined.

I suppose Tomlin could ask Cohwer to start drafting players for him. Best chance he'll get.

This defense had one playmaker, Shazier. The rest of these guys can't make a play to get the ball.

If I were Ben I wouldn't waste my time coming back to that clown-****.

That team will never get to the SB under Tomlin. He's too ****** dumb.

His choice, he chose to keep LeBeau, he chose to appoint Butler as DC, and he chose to put Joey Porter as a LB coach, he has had 10 years to build his defensive staff the way he wanted it to be. His choices have led to where we are. The more we have adopted his Tampa-2 defense the more it goes down hill.

Watt had 7 sacks, was easily our best pass rusher, but he was in coverage 75% of the time this season.

It is football 101, if you know that you do not have cover corners or ball hawking safeties you HAVE to get pressure on the QB and force some mistakes. You give any QB 7 seconds in the pocket and SOMEONE will be open and he will have the time to find them.

I don't think the defense necessarily lacks talent, but they lack the coaching to maximize that talent. I just don't see a unit that does their assignments well, in other words, they aren't disciplined enough to do their specific job. Way too many mistakes out there on a weekly basis. Maybe because it's we watch them the most, but the Steelers also seem like one of the worst tackling teams in the league.
