Why Was Spence Still on the Field Once Matakevich Got Healthy?

Spence was on his couch for two months. Matakevich was good enough to make the Pro Bowl on special teams, and filled in adequately for Shazier until he also was injured against the Bengals.

Spence was too slow and/or out of position for most of the game today.

Why was Matakevich overlooked for a bum who couldn't even play for the Colts this year?

He has a shoulder injury that will need surgery. He can play special teams but taking on blockers over and over was an issue

Oh...didn't know Matakevich wasn't fully healthy. Still...

To be honest Spence inability to make a play changed this game for us. Stand up Fournette on 4th and goal instead of squatting and the whole tone is different

You don’t just replace #50. He was (hopefully one day is) lightening fast. He’s hitting Fournette 2 yards behind the LOS. Steelers need to draft an ILB high and hope he can fly like Shay.

we easily win this game if shazier wasn't in a wheelchair and spence was bagging groceries

This. I'm still in disbelief that he didn't meet him up there. Honestly, more than being surprised by Spence not doing it, I was surprised that #98 wasn't up there to greet him in mid-air. Vince Williams is a streaky player. He has four games in a row where he's all over the field, has 10+ tackles, and a sack, and then he has a game like this where he looks lumbering, and slow, guessing incorrect holes, and brings no physicality. On one of the Bortles runs in the first half that was a big gainer, Bortles sat in the pocket for 5-6 seconds not moving anywhere. Williams was the spy. All of a sudden, Bortles sees a little daylight and steps to his left, and then, and only then, does Williams goes to his left to attack the hole (which rendered him useless in the play), and Bortles goes for 20 yards untouched. Unfortunately, today was one of those games. I like Williams, but he cannot be our #1 backer going into next year. The only thing I can hope to take away from this is that the coaches and organization realizes that we need a change defensively. Last offseason they realized the need to get an impact defensive back, and got one in Haden. Haden was probably one of the top 3 players on that unit this year when healthy. They need to take the same approach again, and load the **** up.

This game showed how slow Vince is and how soft Spence is. Put the two together and you get a ****** Jags offense going up and down the field at will, to the point where we had to onside kick because we weren't stopping anyone.

The game Matakavich was in until he got hurt, he was getting abused too so it's not like there is this massive chasm between he and Spence, skill wise. As much as I like him, from what I saw dirty red is probably destined to be a special teams standout.

Timmons should have been kept around at least as a rotational ILB. Any idiot could see that our depth at ILB was thin even when Shazier was healthy. Matakevich is slow and undersized which isn't a good combination. Both VW and Shazier had histories of getting and injured and missing games.

All the hate on Williams and Spence. What about Heyward and Tuit. Man handled ALL day long. Just a sad effort on their part.

They were total non factors. Jacksonville showed our whole roster what a physical team looks like. Our team likes to think they are physical. They got a big realty check.

Exactly right

Tomlin's defense is all hat no cattle.

***** weak assed team on defense that does nothing but run their mouths and write checks their ***** cant' cash.

Dirty Red needs a shoulder surgery. He probably should have only been playing on special teams

Timmons talked for years that he'd take less to stay in Pittsburgh. When the time came, he took more to go to Miami (then went AWOL). Not much you can do in that situation.

Yeah you're probably right. I just don't remember hearing that the Steelers even gave him an offer.
