they just don't win. I feel if Ben retired either could be had. Both put up good numbers. They just dont win and neither wins big games.

Don't want either. None are better than say, Neil O'Donnell. Actually, he might have been better than them. We are not looking for a decent QB, we are looking for another franchise QB and neither of them fit the bill.

I totally agree. Problem is this team has a lot of pieces in place and is ready to win for tge next three years. If they dont have a qb they are screwed. A rookie takes 2 to 3 years unless you really hit the jackpot

Unless we win it all this year (which we will), Ben will be back next year. I think it's still 50 / 50 if we do win it all this year for his return next year. The wife may say what she wants but also realizes this is what gives her her current t fame and money glory amongst her friends...... She'll give him one more...

With a better O line and this talent at the skill positions, I think they'd figure out a way to win here. Though I'm much higher on Cousins than Smith.

Wouldn't Ben be passing up something like $22m if he decides to retire after this season. I think the wife will allow him to play one more year...

I think win or lose, Ben will be back next year, the only way I don't see him coming back is if he suffered a major injury. I think if he retires after this season he has to pay back part of his signing bonus?

Maybe it's just me, but since the Steelers have went back to their successful version of an offense these past couple of weeks, Ben looks like the Ben of old. Playing with fire, good pocket presence, accurate, just a playmaker. He didn't appear to play with that type of passion for the early part of the season. Again, maybe it was just my imagination, but he just looks like he got his swagger back and took command of the offense.

I definately see that as well. It's like finally Ben see's a chance to win and he is actually playing for something. I think he felt the conservative asshat play calling was a detriment and now he sees that there is a chance of success. Did he have a constructive conversation with coaches / ownership / ball inflators boy(s) ????? Who knows but what ever it is has him hungry and motivated so he'll yea,......let it work !!!!!

I don't think Smith and Cousins are anything alike. I don't see the comparison

Just a few facts. Cousins has thrown for more yards, more TD passes and the Skins scored more points than us in the last 3 years with vastly inferior talent. Cousins is not as good as Ben but Ben has never been great at scoring points and has had great defenses for the vast majority of his time here making it much easier to win. We could do much worse than Cousins

I would definitely take cousins over smith. Cousins did not have any help early last night then the game for out of control. With a better team around him i think cousins would win a lot more

This Steelers team would be at least as good with Cousins as they are with Ben right now. Just my opinion.

I haven't seen enough of Cousins. Smith? A big step back from Ben imho.

Neither have ever been used properly. They would like look good in black and gold. Maybe we should kick the tires.

If I had to choose it would be Cousins who is a more accomplished QB at this level.
Smith IMO is the epitome of what is referred as a game manager. He won’t get you beat with turnovers but he won’t be a guy that can carry you like a Ben has.
As for Ben coming back in 2018, I wish that I had the same confidence as most of you. I’ve felt since last spring that this would be it for him and there are lots of factors. Of course pressure from the wife wanting him to be able to retire in reasonably good health. Then there is the kids that I think he probably feels guilty missing a lot of quality time. Then you factor in 14 years of wear and tear on his body. The mental drain of dealing with practice, game preparations, working with new players, the immaturity of teammates, sacrificing his body.
I don’t know! Money wise, the guy has made more money than he could down in multiple lifetimes so I don’t think paying back bonus money is a factor.
The fact that he’s been entertaining these thoughts the last two seasons tells me he has to really work on pushing himself mentally to get ready to play again.
I’ll tell you one guy that better hope Ben plays another season and that’s Tomlin.

Im not comparing them. Im saying those will be the guys on the market. Cousins for sure and Smith as a minor trade or just released. Cousins is probably better I agree but he just doesnt really win neither.

I would prefer to tank a few seasons and take a risk on a high pick QB over paying Cousins or Smith starting QB money. To be completely honest, I actually like Cousins and I believe that he is a good QB but the price is going to be too high for us to be serious players.

I don't want Alex Smith under any conditions as a starter. I would rather play an entire season or two with Dobbs than watch Alex Smith in a Steeler uniform.

This would only make sense if they trade AB, Bell (if he resigns), and Shazier. 'Tanking a few seasons' pretty much wipes out the rest of AB's and Bell's careers, and the best years of Shazier's career. I'd rather they spend on Cousins, then tank when they take the cap hit hit for it after AB and Bell are gone.

A few games of Landry and yinz would be begging for Cousins.

This makes sense but WOULD have to look very seriously at the cap situation. BELL's cap number would have to be looked at very closely too. I hope they don't pay him his OBSORBANT price tag he is looking for as I think he is done sooner than a lot here think. He is with allready starting his slide.

If Ben were to leave I would take Cousins in a heart beat. He puts up numbers with a cast of back up talent. If you put him on the field with all of our weapons he could do even more. He also has the leadership thing in spades, and not everybody has that. Odds of Ben leaving 22 million on the table are zero, so we have one more year to figure it out.

one guy i think might be an intriguing prospect if he's still around come the 4th or 5th rd, is Logan Woodside out of Toledo. Very well-adjusted kid, very good arm, accurate, has been money for a team in toledo that historically is a joke.

I'd take Cousins at an average starting qb salary. No way would I make him the league's highest paid qb. Paying him that much would put us in the same situation the Rats are in, and we'd have to let some of our weapons go.
