Steelers notebook: Coaching staff says Ben Roethlisberger can forget about QB sneaks
Chris Adamski

A day after Ben Roethlisberger campaigned to run more quarterback sneaks at the goal line or on third- or fourth-and-1, his offensive coordinator played coy about calling the play.

“Maybe we'll have to get it in,” Todd Haley said with a smile.

Why haven't the Steelers to this point?

“Those are kind of general staff decisions,” Haley said. “Some staffs choose not to let people earhole their quarterback in the side of the head. Other staffs take that risk at times. There is risk-reward with everything you do.”

Roethlisberger has 13 carries for minus-9 yards this season, all of which have been either end-of-half kneel downs or scrambles.

They haven't done QB sneaks for years. I've been complaining about it.. Ben is a big guy. Look at Marsha and others. They run it all the time and are very successful. There is NO reason for our coaches not to run QB sneaks. I was pissed when I read that earlier this week. Ben is willing and able but the coaches are saying "no". And we wonder why we are unsuccessful in the redzone. It's the ******* coaches!

You might not like it but their reason is a legit one. And like I said Ben does have a concussion history.

I think all TDX was saying is that if you were to pick the biggest ***** in the league it'd be Brady, so if he can run a QB sneak with regularity, you would think anyone could. When is the last time you've seen a QB get injured on a 1-2 yard QB sneak? It's not like you're asking the guy to take a shotgun snap and Tim Tebow it up the middle as hard as he can...all he literally has to do is fall forward 1 yard and it's an easy conversion. And people wonder why we have such issues with short yardage situations...

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2017/may/17/tom-brady-concussion-gisele-bundchen-nfl

Tom Brady’s wife, Gisele Bundchen, says the New England Patriots quarterback has a history of concussions, including one suffered last season when he took his team to victory in the Super Bowl.

“He had a concussion last year. He has concussions pretty much every ... I mean, we don’t talk about it. He does have concussions,” Bundchen said on CBS’s This Morning on Wednesday. “I don’t really think it’s a healthy thing for a body to go through that kind of aggression all the time. That could not be healthy for you.”

Yes I know it's Gisele talking but would you put it past the Pats to hide it from the rest of the league?

I for one can't seem to remember ever seeing a QB injured as a result of a sneak. If they're trying to keep him completely clean then they may as well put the ixnay on any scrambles too. I've seen far more injured on those.

So they are avoiding the risk to the franchise QB by not having him run the sneak.

Why don't they apply the same logic to punt returns.

Haha where are all the people on here saying Ben is afraid to run those now??? I like the sneak, but I can see the coaches point, hate seeing your QB go head first into the DL.

Ben used to be great at a QB sneak. And with the other defense not expecting it, why not run it?

Did you read the first post. May not like the reason but a reason was given

I wonder if Ben's concussion history plays a part in this decision??

We used to sneak Ben when he was young and before he got in a motorcycle wreck. This makes the most sense to me. He's a huge QB, he should be able to convert a lot of those short down and distance plays just leaning forward

Didnt even consider that part forgot about it

This is kinda typical. We are not going to......... I know exactly what plays they are talking about on those third and fourth downs. And there was a natural A gap bubble on both plays. Pouncey blocks his man left, guard blocks his man right and Ben falls two feet forward. There is a stubborn stupidity to Haley and at times Tomlin where it is we are going to do what we do. Ok we are going to allow a backup safety to throw a pass in a critical situation on fourth down but not let our QB fall forward 2 feet. Todd, I think your ****** play calling puts him in harms way a lot. I wouldn't worry about the QB sneak too much.

e DE shifted down closer to the guard. Too late for Al to adjust his stance. Couldnt reach him.

A FB could help there, and Ramon ended up blocking no one
Even if AL gets the block there's a LB coming untouched behind him

Its been a while, but Ben used to be a run first QB way back when. Its been a while since Ben has consistently run the ball

IF he kept his feet moving he could have.

After looking at this again.. it appears to be a technique thing. He never turns his shoulders to the d lineman and couldnt keep up the shuffle to the right.

Hard to place blame without knowing the players assignment. I mean not much Al can do there, the DL pushes Ramon out of the way and runs through where Ramon was

The gif doesnt show the shift by the DE he was originally shaded more outside then jumped in towards the guard. Al was already set. Couldnt adjust and tighten his split.

If Ben not sneaking means less of a chance of seeing Landry in a meaningful game, I'm all for it.

Thanks for making us one dimensional on short yardage. We're either going to run a slow developing run play, or throw deep...
