Behind the numbers on the interceptions

In the last 2 weeks Ben threw 6 interceptions. 4 of the six were not his fault.

Consider the below:

AB had a pass taken away that counted as a pick. Hey Ref, you suck

Juju fell down on a route and his target got picked. A fluke.

One pass was tipped at the line of scrimmage and got picked. This does not happen often.

During a last minute desperation pass Ben's arm got hit was intercepted, this is on the OL. I think Hubbard was the cause.

So to the crowd that wants Ben dead and buried, he played poorly but at least half of the interceptions were not his fault. I think Brown also had his hands touch a ball that was intercepted but I'm not even counting that one.

Most WR's wouldn't have had a chance at that catch. AB is one of the few that would have been able to make it.

I'm not sold on the "JuJu fell down". He looked purposely tripped/pushed to me.

Every QB has this **** happen to them.

Tripped or fell down. My point was 4 things happened that are not Ben's fault on 4 interceptions.

Especially the one that Telvin Smith returned for a td. Reading bleacher report, they made it sound like Ben threw it right into his breadbasket, but refused to acknowledge that it was not only tipped at the line, but the tip totally changed the footballs trajection. Without the d-lineman getting his hands on it, that pass sails right into Jesse Jame's waiting hands.

I also liked how the refs missed Bryant blatantly getting kicked in the groin by that little ***** Ramsey. Or Campbell taking Ben out below the knee after he got rid the ball. Officiating didn't cost the Steelers this game, but there were some obvious no-calls only for us to get a td called back for a ****** hold.
 
Ben had at least 2 that were his fault yesterday - the very high throw to AB and the one after the Decastro holding to eliminate the TD. I guess you could call that one Decastro's fault as it never would have happened if he didn't hold his guy.

This is an idiotic exercise- How many of his passes SHOULD HAVE been interceptions?

How about the one where Brown has to make an incredible leaping grab due to an high/errant throw? Or the throw in the EZ, where Brown has to literally interfere with CB because Ben was throwing into blanketed coverage?
 
Coach this isn't just a one game INT issue. Ben is 30th in completion percentage. He hasn't been old Ben this year IMO.

The passing lane was open for a second. By the time it was thrown, the DL made a very good play to move over and get a hand on the ball.

Either way, I will say it again, if Flacco had a game like yesterday, not one person here would be explaining it away.

That seemed a very iffy hold IMO. I've seen less called and way worse not called.
 
Yes, Ben is not alone in the blame of interceptions but looking at some film you can see at Steelers depot Ben is focusing in on his pre-snap read and not going through his progressions. And even if that's your read bait the defense a little. Turn your body or head opposite direction at the snap, pump fake, do something. Looks like defenses are also taking a d-lineman and having them spy Ben without rushing just sitting back to knock passes down. Again a quick shoulder pump would negate that.

I think next week implement a few changes like that. Have ben look off the safety pump that direction and have another WR run a double move on the opposite side. Should be open early and often.

My 5 cents:

#1 Conner does his best "Wiff" Johnson imitation, Ben gets hit as he throws. If clean, I think that goes for a big gain. Opinion: That's on the rookie.
#2 Ball is tipped at line. Opinion: Dumb luck and good play by the Jags.
#3 High ball, but only place it could be thrown, INTO TRIPLE COVERAGE! Opinion: That's on Ben. Brown gets dishonorable mention as he cries for the ball all the time and it did hit him in both hands.
#4 JuJu is tripped as/after Ben releases on a timing pattern. Opinion: Dumb luck/an argument can be made that one is on the officials for not throwing a flag.
#5 Ben tries to force the ball after having a TD nullified by penalty. Opinion: That's on Ben. Whole team gets dishonorable mention for letting the game slip into desperation mode.

Conclusion: While Ben certainly can play better, to put ALL he blame on him is just not accurate. If we score TD's instead of FG's we are up 21-7 and running the ball in the second half. **** play calling in the redzone is a bigger concern to me than trying to blame the offensive woes on one player.

I can't speak for everyone but, I think most recognize that the decline might be beginning and It might not be such a bad idea to start QB shopping. This is not a one game fluke you are trying to paint it. If this team is surprised by Ben and left in the lurch with Dobbs and Jones as the only options it's going to get ugly quick.

That a veteran QB is not doing those things is very concerning. He would always pump fake now he just telegraphs everything and seems to not be focused for whatever reason.

You are forgetting the pick against McDonald, who didn't fight to break up the pass, much less catch it or wrest it away. Whose the culprit now? Ben or McDonald? Let me guess, Tomlin's.

While I don't disagree, in a lot of cases, I don't think the line is holding up their end of the bargain on giving him the time to look off the read, or, he is not confident they are going to do so. Some times he has a lot of time. Others, not so much,

Great breakdown Coach. Thanks for that.

After the 24 hour cool off period I think the over reaction to Bens play is probably too harsh. Yes, he sucked Sunday. However, everything that could go right for Jax defense did. Ben has been off. No doubt. He practices only Wednesday and Thursdays now, and did not put a lot into preseason. I think he is just getting up to game speed and timing himself. Not making an excuse. Just trying to look and analyze his play objectively.

I pray he does an about face this Sunday at Arrowhead.

What if Ben, the Million Dollar Man, and the rest of the "O" had played a little more during the preseason? Just a thought.
