Steelers trade for Vance McDonald

https://www.steelernation.com/steelers-aquire-tight-end-vance-mcdonald-49ers/

The Steelers announced today that they have traded their 4th round choice in the 2018 NFL Draft to the San Francisco 49ers for tight end Vance McDonald and their 5th round selection in 2018.

McDonald, 27, was the second round selection of the 49ers in the 2013 NFL Draft. Prior to the 49ers cleaning house in the front office McDonald was signed to a three-year extension that would’ve kept him with the 49ers thru the 2021 season. New GM John Lynch actively tried to trade McDonald during the draft, but was able to reach a deal with anyone.

Drops and injuries have stopped him from reaching his full potential. According to Pro Football focus, his 15.8 percent drop rate over the last four years is the worst among NFL tight ends who have at least 75 catchable targets over that span. He also has missed 16 games including two stints on injured reserve in the last four years.

While injuries and dropped passes have overshadowed his career to date, his athletic ability can’t be denied. He pulled in two receptions of over 65-yards last season which were two of the top five longest receptions for a tight end last year. In college at Rice over three years he amassed over 1500 yards and 15 touchdown receptions.

When Heath Miller retired prior to last season the Steelers attempted to fill his spot with free agent Ladarius Green. That turned into a nightmare and Green was released in May when he couldn’t pass his physical. Jesse James has had an underwhelming training camp even though he was handed the starting position. The fact that he hasn’t been able to progress more has left them with a huge hole in an otherwise explosive offense.

With the addition of McDonald that means that either David Johnson or Xavier Grimble will be expendable. Johnson is primarily used a run blocker and could be replaced in short yards situations by swing tackle Chris Hubbard.

McDonald will wear #89.

89, he even gets Green's number. Ha! Here We Go new guy. You weren't used properly. Your old QB was bent the knee

I'm really excited about this guy. Looks like a fast, physical atheletic guy. Bye bye whiff Johnson!

Walter football draft profile

Vance McDonald, TE, Rice
Height: 6-4. Weight: 267. Arm: 34 1/2. Hand: 10.18.
40 Time: 4.69.
Projected Round (2013): 3-4.
4/23/13: McDonald showed at the Combine that he is a physical specimen and a rare athlete. He had one of the faster 40 times and led all of the tight ends on the bench press (31 reps). McDonald had a good showing at the Senior Bowl, too. He used his quickness and route-running to get open and make plays downfield. McDonald is a unique athlete who could go earlier than expected on draft day.

McDonald caught 36 passes for 458 yards and two touchdowns in 2012. His best season came as a junior when he hauled in 43 receptions for 532 yards and five scores. He made 28 catches for 396 yards and eight touchdowns in 2011. McDonald is a good receiver who needs to work on his blocking ability.

With Comp picks, it was 11 this year. That 5th round spot is where they took Kittle.....we got Dobbs.....

talking about what was given up for him today, not about his draft slot

Steelers acquired TE Vance McDonald and a fifth-round pick from the 49ers in exchange for a fourth-round pick.

The 49ers seemed content to stick with McDonald after attempting to trade him this offseason, but they are essentially giving him away for free. It is a great move for the Steelers, who lacked real weapons at the position. It will take him some time to settle in, but McDonald should push Jesse James for targets at some point this season.

A 4th and a 5th for Vance? He could be our best receiving TE. One thing I like is his yards per catch and speed is better than James ( according to their 40 yard combine times. )4.69 to 4.83

I like the move even though a 4th and 5th is a bit pricy if he doesn't start.

no a exchange our 4th (we draft late) their 5th (they draft early)

I like it! Vance would've easily scored a TD against the Patriots when James got tackled at the goaline. James is a very mediocre TE.

Providing he caught the ball in the first place.

JJ and Grimble haven't exactly been the epitome of sure handed.

Have you seen the QB's this guy has had. Not saying he will be pro bowl but excited to see what will happen once he has someone who can actually play quarterback.

All I know is that I've immediately put in a waiver claim for him in my fantasy league. He's gonna be a beast for us.

me, too...our 4th round pick was 11 spots before the 49ers draft pick in the 5th....

I was thinking we could have the last pick in the 4th and they could pick first in the 5th depending on how this season shakes out?or am I mistaken?

Seems odd on San Fran's part. They just signed him to 5 year contract extension with a 7 mill bonus in December.
They essentially gave up 7 million to move up from the 5th to the 4th round.

Has to do with new GM and his contract. They guy in the video I put up highlighted that.
