Steelers trade for Phillips

I think the Steelers made attempts to address the problem. Sutton and Golson are massaging eachother in the medical room which really hasnt helped. Cockrell needs to play significantly better than he showed against Atlanta. No Mitchell has hurt. I think Gay is going to be kept a year too long like Ike was, which will be a mistake. Hilton might be a bit of a gem in the rough. Maybe Dangerfield. Im not panicking but somewhat concerned.

FACT: Our DL has never been the same since Casey Hampton left - none of the fill-ins have come close. You can't be a dominant 3/4 without a star NT.

We've been chasing gaping holes every since

But run stoppage isnt the issue and I would take Gravedigger over Hampton on a 4 man pass rush any day. Hampton was the best at what he did unquestionably. They just dont do that much anymore.

Run stoppage hasn't been all that great either - I guess what I'm looking at is nobody on our DL warrants a double team like Casey did, just his presence opened holes for others

I think Heyward and Tuitt are damn good. Apparently 10m good. Gravedigger has top flight potential. No point in comparing him to Hampton. But he is more than adequate.
And truthfully by second down Hampton would be out if the game anyhow. The game has changed.

The secondary has not improved and as they stand will hurt us again this year. Bring in anyone can't hurt from what we have seen in two games.

Lol, two in one day. Something tells me they are displeased with their CB depth. Might as well throw some stuff at the wall and hope it sticks.

Golosn might as well reserve an isle seat for the plane trip home.

Im gonna try not to rush to judgement. Replacing of Jarvis Jones and a full season of Dupree will help the back end. But yeah, a little concerning.

at least Watt, Shazier and Dupree are quick enough to cover some

Shazier could be our 2nd or 3rd best coverage person on the team!

From what I've seen, Watt should do well in short zone coverage, and Durpee on short man coverage.

I agree. In the two Ive watched TJ has hit his zone drop and the qb has had to look off and go elsewhere several times. Very good sign. He was no where near the qb against Atl but that is reality. Still had a few good run tackles.

Two more CB scrubs. Sucks that they drafted relatively high at DB the past few years and ended up with a bust in the injured Golson and now with Sutton being injured and seeing no playing time in his first camp. This may be a red shirt year for him because of it. We still have Burns and Davis but we needed more help back there. Let's hope Sutton can show something in the next 2 weeks.

Problem is cockrell started to suck last year as well. It is more than just one preseason game where he has underperformed. Pretty sad when our only hope is another cast off and a guy who can't even get on the field

Is our defence better than last year? I say yes. #glasshalffull

I think it is better than last year but not by much. It's not just the fact is it better it's the fact it could have been WAY better. Our injuries are hard to take but I think the front office over estimated GOLSON's health for this year. I've said earlier pre draft that the one main piece missing is a solid CB. Many here feel this way and there has been oppurtunity to upgrade but for some reason the FO has doodled on that front.

The rush has nothing to do with being able to keep with your man and play the ball. We have neither in the secondary.

Wrong. Have you played the game??? If your pass rush is above average - QB's make bad decisions with less time - that means your coverage does not have to be stellar but at least adequate and it will produce turnovers.

Now, do we have that yet? It is yet to be seen...

Giants had no problem beating the Pats with a superior pass rush!

I think pass rush AND coverage need to be above average.

I think we have most of the pieces in place for this to happen. But eyes have to fall to two CB positions if that will be achieved or not.

A rush can mask some secondar'st problems but then teams will start maxinize protection and abusing a below average secondary. We need guys that can stay in the frame on man to man coverages.

About 5 1/2 seconds. First 31/2 the CB must be like glue because then the rush will force the QB and hopefully into a tighter target range with a little hurry............thus incomplete / intercepted / sacked / complete. POINT is you MUST have a rush that gets there and CBs who can hold till rush gets there............

Word...and it's been like that since leather helmets. Only exception....err maybe not exception, lets say anomaly, Buddy Ryan's "46" Defense, that stacked against the run while putting a helmet on every body at the line and was a blitz threat on every play but that eventually fell to Bill Welch's "West Coast" offense.that dinked and dunked them to death.

The sooner you show a tendency the sooner someone will show you a way to stop it.

How's that song go Love & Marriage.....can't have one without the other. Your coverage better be able to outlast your rush...period.
