Sammie Coates activated off PUP

https://www.steelernation.com/sammie-coates-activated-pup/

The Steelers have activated receiver Sammie Coates from the physically unable to preform list on Wednesday. Coates was placed on the PUP list after having minor offseason knee surgery to repair an injury he suffered while training for the season.

The return of Coates will add another receiver to the already crowded position. He will quickly be thrown into a battle for a roster spot that he seemingly is already behind in. Only two roster spots will remain for Justin Hunter, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Demarcus Ayers, Cobi Hamilton, Marcus Tucker, and Coates.

Coates is expected to play on Sunday when the Steelers open their home preseason schedule with a game against the Falcons

Brown
Bryant
Juju
Rogers

I guess is the thinking of the locked in four?

Right now it looks like Hunter/Coates/Hamilton.

Still think Coates could be a last minute trade, but man a few of these capable receivers are going to be in different uniforms come game day.

Not to be a jerk, but why is Rogers a lock? I'm not saying he doesn't deserve to make the team, but I also don't understand why he's untouchable.

Rogers is in his 2nd year playing and has shown a lot of promise and capability. Ben and the coaches like him. The only knock I have heard on him recently is he is still running wrong routes. If he keeps that up, he may not be a lock. This is his 2nd year playing with 1 year injured so he should know the playbook inside and out.

Rogers is probably safe but i don't think he's a sure thing. He doesn't really offer much after the catch and he got benched last year for being late to meetings or something right?

Rogers better get better at making people miss and breaking tackles. That's the improvement i want to see from him

I guess I'm a bit surprised at Coates coming off of the PUP. I was sure he'd be a while, still.

I hope he gets back to the early season form from last year.

The Steelers rarely in the past traded from a crowded position... maybe times have changed post Dan but the used to cut guys loose so they could find the best fit for themselves

I was thinking why not try Bryant and Coates outside and Brown in the slot?

Might be a lethal trifecta.

Eli is a lock because he's the second best route runner and has the second best hands on the team behind AB.

WowZa>>>>>>.. They are bringing him out early to test him. If his mental isn't where it needs to be, I think they dump him. I for one am glad he is active now and they can analyze him to see what they've got. Unfortunately the player I think this affects the most is AYERS as he is on the edge looking in. ANY word on his whereabouts as to returning to practice???

Salute the nation

If they can get a 6th or 7th rd draft pick for someone, I believe they will trade. Coates might be one of the ones that could get that
return. Particularly if a team ends the preseason with injury issues at the position.

If we're taking 6, they better be:
Brown-Bryant-JuJu-Rogers-Hunter-Ayers

Anything less would be uncivilized

And competition at the position heats up !
That's the funniest damn thing I've read all day.

Coates really adds no competition until he shows his head is back right and he can catch the ball again. He couldn't catch the ball in OTA's.

Instead of talking about Rogers not being a lock, where does Coates fit in at all. He had a no catch attitude, never fought for the ball dropped balls and had a lack luster attitude on special teams more times than not.

I go with Coates over Hunter. I think Hunter will get the yips (again) once the real games start.

I've seen a few years of Coates, I will pass....and not to him. Give me Hunter for a year and lets see how he does.

I would say that no wr outside AB and Bryant are untouchable but Rogers was very good for them last year so if you throw in JUJu those two are close to lead pipe locks. There is just not much that happens in these camps and pre season games to unseat a guy like Rogers. They have up and down days but Rogers has legit game film. He is in.

Excuse my ignorance - What are "yips"?

Pretty sure they are barks caused by very small dogs.

Seriously though, The only 2 locks on this roster are AB and JuJu. Everyone else is not a lock IMHO. Bryant and his troubles could get him dealt. Eli can lose out to JuJu and another slot player if they show more. Don't get me wrong, I think Bryant and Eli will make the team, but I don't think anyone is a lock outside of those first 2.
