TJ Watt named starter

Let us not pretend that all time sack leader is the same as he was, or that he is even what he was last year. Too early to tell.

Watt (or "What" whichever you prefer) isn't too early to tell is Watt has shown more in one training camp, than Jarvis in his entire Steeler career.

So you have two capable players arguably going in opposite directions at this stage of their career.

So you run the wheels off of one and preserve the other for late in games, or later in the season.

You are perhaps prolonging father time, at the same time giving valuable reps to a player that will need to see a lot between now and the post season. or be comfy enough to be a factor year one. When it matters the most.

You don't get that by sitting Watt. And perhaps you don't get a at his best Deebo for overplaying him in this stage of his career.

True that.

Keeping some miles off Deebo and being fresher for the end of the season worked out well last year I thought.

Me too, might as well save him for later just in case. It's not like he will wither away on the bench or loose a step. The old man work out warrior will be jus fine.

I cringe every time Porter speaks to the press. When it comes to 92. It seems like he is jealous that Deebo is still playing and he is not. I can't wait to read what Harrisson has to say.

I already said months ago that Bud's low end this year is 10 sacks. That is assuming he is healthy and they don't drop him in coverage nearly as much as they did at the end of last year. And, close to 15 sacks would not surprise me. I can easily see another 10+ sacks coming from Watt/Deebo. Again, this will also depend on how we use these guys. If we just rush 2 or 3 guys like we did way too often last year, we won't get any pressure. And, if we only have 2 DL in the game and rush 1 or 2 LB's, then their sack numbers will be less. I still do not buy not needing 3 DL in the game at pretty much all times. Sub-package football has not worked. Any team that sees us do it, just hands the ball off and their RB goes for 10+ almost every time as we are way undersized.

It seemed to me that the LB sack total was down because they were dropped back in coverage more because the DB's weren't very good (plus Jarvis' negative sack total). If the younger crowd of DB's steps up then the LB's can rush more.

Any chance Harrison comes in for Williams on occasion? Would like to see teams dealing with Watt, Dupree and Harrison at the same time.

Correction, Peezy is still playing from the sidelines. He made a great play in the Bengals game to draw the personal foul. :orange:

I have no issue with this or with what Porter said. We all know our 39 year old linebacker should not be our primary ROLB.

The Steelers break conventional wisdom and announce a rookie starter in Training camp??

Hmm Haw?

jones had 40-45% of the D snap counts over the last two seasons (45% last year 40% prior year). I don't know anyone who doesn't already think current Watt is better than year 4 Jones. This should lead us to think that Watt will get more snaps than that and, probably, drop Deebo to under 50%.

I like this idea, but I think Watt would be better served inside and Harrison at his natural ROLB spot. I'd be all for Harrison, Watt, Shazier, and Dupree being on the field at the same time.

Watt must be excelling day in and day out, impressing coaches on the practice field, in the film room, his understanding of the schemes and plays, along with his showing against the Giants last week.

For them to make a move this early, for them to have such confidence in a rookie, it has to be a culmination of a whole lot of things. Which really should have us excited for the kid.

I think he has so much respect for Deebo and for the game itself, it won't go to his head. He seems like an even-keeled, hard working kid. This should motivate both him and Deebo to bring out their best.

And I love the idea Deebo will view this as yet another slight, yet another chip on his shoulder, yet another reason for him to prove the world wrong when he does get on the field. I was shocked to see how effective he was at certain points of the season last year. I figured he was pretty much washed up. He is an amazing player and person, truly one of the great ones to wear a Steelers jersey.

What took Tomlin so long.

I was thinking something along these lines. Get rid of that crap 2 DL stuff on 3rd and long. I would think Harrison would be a better fit for inside because of his strength and he is still probably quicker than a lot of guards. I would put watt or dupree and harrison side by side in some situations. You cant double both guys.

I don't get it.

WIlliams is presumably the starting ILB. about 12 years or so younger than Deebo.

Personally I don't feel Watt is already better than Williams. Especially inside.

I guess I should have clarified. I did not mean Harrison at MLB (he is too slow and would be wasting his pass rush talent). I meant inside on the line as a RE or LE. In 3rd and long or passing downs I was thinking Watt and Dupree on the outside then Harrison and Heyward or Tuit inside. Shazier would be MLB then whatever mixture of CBs and Ss you want. You could also throw in Hargrave or the other DE for a stacked line and still have 3 CBs and 2 Ss. I would not do this all the time, but I would think it would be hard to block 3 good rushers. Mix it up see what happens.

hmmmm

DE Heyward NT Hargave DE Harrison DE Tuitt

OLB -Dupree ILB Shazier OLB -Watt

CB Burns SS Davis CB Cockrell

- - - - - - - -FS Mitchell--------

Peezy better learn as a coach to keep his mouth closed a bit more. Its third week of camp and not even the second pre season game and he is annointing a rookie starter and saying Harrison will theoretically play very little. Just ****** coach Joey. Leave the talking to the HC

Nothing wrong having Harrison to come in for a player to take a breather, Harrison can stay strong for the complete year. Someone gets banged up Harrison can still play.

He's just jealous that Harrison is still playing.
