PITTSBURGH (93-7 THE FAN) — I don’t have any scientific data and I haven’t consulted Quinnipiac, but it sure feels like Mike Tomlin has a higher approval rating outside western Pennsylvania than he does in these parts.

I don’t get that.

Never will.

Or, maybe for some reason, we are just tougher on our own than we probably should be. Who knows?

Nonetheless, I will make this firm, steadfast statement: Mike Tomlin is the second-best coach in the National Football League right now behind Bill Belichick. Yep, there you have it. He is the man after the man.

If that is something that you raise an eyebrow over or go so far as to vehemently disagree with, I ask you this: Who do you want over Tomlin?

Yeah, that’s your litmus test – who would you take over Tomlin, a man who has won a Super Bowl, been to another, has a 103-57 regular season record, has never had a losing season and is coming off a three-season stretch where the Steelers won 11, 10 and 11 games?

Really this isn’t a study in finding Tomlin’s warts because, believe me, I can pick them out as well. The guy has been deficient at times with his clock management, he loses far too many games to bad teams, some say his buddy-buddy-relationship with players is a bit too close, he can’t beat the New England Patriots in a meaningful game and on and on.

Then there is the whole “he only won with Bill Cowher’s players” narrative which is blown out of the water to me because, you know, Bill Cowher didn’t win at the end of his career with Bill Cowher’s players.

There is the whole thing about Tomlin only succeeding because he gets to coach standout quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. To that I say show me a truly great coach in NFL history who didn’t have a great quarterback.

Anyhow, I get it. I understand it. Tomlin has shortcomings. Then again, which coach doesn’t?

Which gets us back to the fundamental point: Who would you rather have coaching your team not named Bill Belichick? I say no one currently employed by an NFL franchise.

I could maybe listen to a case for Greenfield’s Mike McCarthy who coaches the Green Bay Packers. But, what’s he done since winning a Super Bowl and remind me again how much better his defense has ever gotten.

You want to tell me about Andy Reid? No. Sorry.

Pete Carroll? People want to really mention Pete Carroll? If he was such a brilliant football mind perhaps in one of the biggest moments of his career he would have handed the football to his most potent short-yardage guy at the damn 1 yard line instead of putting it in the air.

And Sean Payton, John Harbaugh or Bruce Arians? No, not better than Mike Tomlin. They just are not.

So as the Steelers as set to get going in a couple of weeks, there will be people who are ready to pounce on Tomlin, people in Pittsburgh ready to pick at all his ugly lumps.

For me — and I wasn’t always the biggest Mike Tomlin fan — I have warmed to really understand how good of a football coach he is. I have come to understand there’s just one guy — Belichick — currently doing it in the NFL who is better.

I don’t get that.

1 His teams play down to bottom feeders.
2 Has to get over the cheatriot hump.

Fans of losing teams like him as his team (our team) wins and continues to win.

But Steelers fans want championships, and none to show for it recently.

I am not as hard on him as I used to be, but want improvement in 1 and 2.

Is he a top 2 coach? possibly... maybe

I question his clutch time decision making and X and O ability.

And desire a top 1 coach.

But that is something plenty of fans desire in and out of Pittsburgh.

Tomlin regularly loses to bad teams, every year. He easily is out strategized by other coaches (Belichick, Del Rio). You can't win the AFC championship that way.

2014 should of ended any discussion; but we lost in the playoffs to the Ravens at home in the WC game. That stung.

That allowed the no playoff wins in in 4 years talk to fester.

2015 & 2016 is when his rebuilt teams proved their mettle and should have erased any and all doubt.

Well Billiecheat beats everyone, but he's no ******* genius. Ernie Adams (happens to be my great uncles name) is. And whatever Intel gathering bs they do is. They are the NSA of the NFL. Make no mistake about it. Hard to beat teams that know ALL of your stuff.

I'd be happy beating the crap out if bad teams and beating the pats***** with overwhelming firepower regardless of what horseshit they're pulling.

Sad but true. Realistically, who's as good or better? Mike McCarthy and maybe Sean Payton who was suspended for a year. That's all I got. Problem is the best coach is in the same conference and keeps us out of Super Bowls.

Well, I would rather miss the Super Bowl than to get there and get beaten like a drum in the Super Bowl.

Hmmm. I just noticed that when the filter spells SB backwards, the word bowl is misspelled. The filter makes it "lowB" when it should be "lwoB"

Instead of starting a new thread i will plsce this here. Clock management

The Expansive Mike Tomlin

Mike Tomlin must've been in a good mood following Tuesday's practice. Perhaps it was the idyllic weather conditions in Latrobe, but the coach was rather expansive with the media. So let's lean on him for the practice report and save the storytelling for tomorrow's Morning After.

Time Management

Ben Roethlisberger probably won't play more than one series in the preseason opener -- if that -- but he received a majority of the reps Tuesday afternoon. He was the first-team quarterback for the late two-minute drill, and after a big gain to the opponent's 25-yard line with a bullet to Antonio Brown in the middle of the field, Roethlisberger rushed to the line and spiked the ball -- with 1:11 left.
It was a waste of a down, always has been in my opinion, but we've become accustomed to watching it. Hard to argue with Roethlisberger's late-game instincts and success but this has always bugged me a bit.
He and Tomlin talked, as if setting up the next series of plays, and on second down Roethlisberger hit Xavier Grimble with a 19-yard pass for a first-and-goal at the 6. And, with 1:06 remaining, the Steelers used their last timeout.
Again, way too much time left to call a timeout. I can understand if new players are in the game and you need a re-set to make sure you score from the six. But too many times the Steelers score and give the other team the ball with too much time left. At least reach for perfection -- score with no time left for the opposition -- in practice.
Tomlin and Roethlisberger talked again, and we assumed they were discussing the next series. After an incompletion, Roethlisberger pumped a fastball through a tight window to Brown for the score.
The second team, led by Joshua Dobbs, also scored a touchdown on a pass to Canaan Severin with no time left. The offense lost precious time on the previous play when Mike Hilton tackling Terrell Watson inbounds on a flare in the flat.
After practice, Tomlin was asked by Jim Colony to assess the management of the two-minute drill with Roethlisberger.
"I liked it," Tomlin said. "There were some things to discuss. More than anything we try to put ourselves in some scenarios where we have some good, meaty discussions. You see he and I gather after the sequence to talk about 'burn a timeout' or 'kill the clock' and those type things. More than anything it's about getting enough of those scenarios in where we can have meaty discussions and learn, not only for him but obviously for guys who aren't participating, particularly young quarterbacks like Bart (Houston)."
That's the first time I've seen such a drill, in which Tomlin basically stopped play to discuss philosophy with Roethlisberger. Could that turn around the pair's performances in such situations? We'll see.

I should just grab the popcorn set back and wait.

Dave Shula...

Mic Drop!

or maybe Tomlin sucks.

I think most have soften their stance with this, as winning playoff games can sway opinions in a different direction.

Now it is more of taking that final step to get back to the SB.

Ben always burns downs, it drives me nuts. Clocks the ball when he doesn't have to. TOs with too much time on the clock. Ben is as much or more so to blame than Tomlin here. Ben gets to run the 2min offense, and he's never been perfect at time management. That ravens game, we were lucky AB broke the plane, otherwise Tomlin would have been blamed for Ben's mistake of throwing short of the end zone, under 10 sec.

Conversely though, Ben is also one of the best 4th qtr comeback QBs to ever play in the NFL, so you have to take the good with the bad.

I agree, I can't think of anyone else in the league besides Darth Hoodie. Neither can his detractors. Long on criticism, short on better options. He must not be that bad if you can't come up with any that would be better.

McCarthy has the best QB in the league, one of the best in history. How much more than Tomlin has he done?

May be a good coach but three things stand out , clock management, does not have team ready to play teams less than the Steelers and oh how I hate that look he gets when thing are going downhill. He does not know how to coach during the game when it comes to making a change

I'm proud to say I'm a big Mike Tomlin supporter and have been for years. He represents everything to me the Steelers have stood for over the decades. Hard work, resiliency, perseverance. The notion not one man is bigger than the team. The singular focus of playing for a Lombardi each and every year. Sure he's made some bonehead in-game decisions, which coach hasn't? More than anything, he gets the players to buy into what he's selling year in and year out. This team plays for each other, and has for years. I also love the fact he's surrounded himself with capable, experienced assistants. He seems to delegate responsibilities well and doesn't micro-manage. And finally, the rapport he has with Colbert and the Rooneys speaks for itself. You never see any finger pointing or lack of accountability with this team. Since I hate Belichik to no end, that makes Tomlin the #1 coach in the league for me. There's nobody out there I'd rather have coaching the team.

Buddy Ryan!

partnered with

Kevin Gilbride!

The perfect 1-2 punch!

(Now that Ryan has passed, Gilbride will have to go all "Fight Club" The first rule of game planning. We don't Talk about how the game plans are developed. The 2nd rule of game planning. We don't talk about how the game plans are developed.)

Jim Mora!

"Holdout? Holdout? Don't even talk to me about a holdout. We're just trying to get a few players through a ******* practice and you want to talk to me about a holdout? HOLDOUT?"

Hes a great coach when comes to teaching the x's o's. Its his in game decisions (or lack of) and clock management that are lacking.

Tomlin is a very good coach, and at the moment it's hard to argue with #2. His teams have been Tebow'd too many times for my liking and his in game adjustments leave a lot to be desired, but we could do a lot worse.

McCarthy has the best QB in the league, one of the best in history. How much more than Tomlin has he done?

He probably loses less games to teams with sub-.500 records.
