Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger returned from his scheduled day off, and the Pittsburgh Steelers were in pads for the second afternoon in a row at Saint Vincent College on Monday.

Roethlisberger appeared to be shaking the rust off a bit early in practice, as he misfired on a few passes in the wide receiver-vs.-defensive backs drill. The period once again showcased the matchup of training camp so far with wide receiver Antonio Brown going up against cornerback Artie Burns. Brown got the best of Burns twice for touchdowns.

The defensive backs have been quite physical with the wide receivers throughout camp so far, leading wide receiver Cobi Hamilton to at one point pull a yellow towel out and toss it on the field in frustration after he felt that cornerback Greg Ducre interfered with him on a pass during WRs-vs.DBs.

Speaking of the defense, they looked fast during 11-on-11 and broke through the line twice to stop rushing attempts that led to loss of yards for the offense.

Monday's practice featured a new drill that pitted the tight ends against the linebackers in a run-game scenario.

"Guys are just working," said head coach Mike Tomlin. "It's a good atmosphere. It's a competitive environment. It's a learning-and-teaching environment. It's been largely positive."

Injuries Mount
Quarterback Landry Jones (abdominal strain), defensive tackle Stephon Tuitt (ankle) and linebacker Ryan Shazier (heat related illness) all exited practice on Monday, according to Tomlin.

Tight end Xavier Grimble (heat related illness) missed practice on Sunday but returned on Monday. Rookie wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster (ankle) continues to work his way back since suffering an injury last Friday. He took a part in a few drills on Monday but was not a full participant.

Rookie running back James Conner (shoulder) was being evaluated on Monday and missed practice. Cornerback Senquez Golson (soft tissue injury) was also out of action after being carted off the field on Sunday.

"No update on when they'll return," said Tomlin of Connor and Golson.

Bryant Close To Return?
Wide receiver Martavis Bryant was out on one of the fields at Saint Vincent catching passes on Monday but is still awaiting reinstatement from the NFL.

"None. No development," said Tomlin when asked about Bryant's status following practice.

Next Up
The Steelers will have the day off tomorrow before returning to the practice fields at Saint Vincent on Wednesday (Aug. 2). Practice is slated to begin at 2:55 p.m. ET. Campus opens at noon ET.

"We're encouraging guys to do the things that allow them to remain out here and continue to work," said Tomlin. "The off day probably comes at the appropriate time. We've gotten a lot out of these guys the last few days. The effort has been extraordinary, but that's to be expected when you're doing what we're trying to do here, which is to develop into a world championship-caliber group."

GREAT read and thanks for posting #81.

Salute the nation

read somewhere that Hamilton was 0 for 5 in the DB/WR drills...not a good showing in drills slanted toward the WR......

Who plays rb with Bell and Conner out?

Who plays rb with Bell and Conner out?

Steelers are asking that very same question, funny you should ask.

If Conner's injury keeps him out for any time, Fitz looks to still be our No. 2. I was hoping to upgrade from him but Davis apparently hasn't looked very good so far, especially with blocking.

So why are we as a team so hellbent against bringing back Deangelo?

Steelers Training Camp Statistical Recap: First Four Practices

BY ALEX KOZORA AUGUST 2, 2017 AT 08:30 AM

With the off day Tuesday, continued to comb through my notes and compile the data we have to recap the Pittsburgh Steelers’ first four days of work. We have a couple stats to offer. Quarterbacks completion, attempts, touchdowns, and picks. Running backs carries. And wide receiver targets, catches, touchdowns, and drops.

As always, they’re not numbers and can’t always provide proper contexts. This data includes the first two non-padded practices but I broke them up separately with the padded ones when I compiled the data. As we go through camp, I may drop those first two practices since they’re glorified OTAs.

Quarterbacks

Josh Dobbs: 25/45 (55.6%) 2 TDs 1 INT
Ben Roethlisberger: 26/39 (66.7%), 4 TDs 0 INTs
Landry Jones: 22/36 (61.1%) 4 TDs 1 INT
Bart Houston: 10/16 (62.5%) o TDs 0 INTs

Running Backs Carries

Knile Davis: 23
James Conner: 12
Fitzgerald Toussaint: 10
Trey Williams: 10
Brandon Brown-Dukes: 9
Terrell Watson: 7
Justin Hunter: 1

Wide Receiver Catches/Targets/Touchdowns

Justin Hunter: 9/16 (56.3%) 4 TDs
Antonio Brown: 7/16 (43.8%) 0 TDs
Cobi Hamilton: 5/12 (41.7%) 1 TD
Jesse James: 7/11 (63.6%)
Eli Rogers: 5/10 (50%)
Marcus Tucker: 8/9 (88.9%)
Demarcus Ayers: 6/8 (75%) 1 TD
Fitzgerald Toussaint: 4/7 (57.1%)
Phazahn Odom: 2/7 (28.6%)
Canaan Severin: 3/6 (50%)
Darrius Heyward-Bey: 2/6 (33%)
Xavier Grimble: 2/4 (50%) 1 TD
David Johnson: 4/4 (100%) 1 TD
Roosevelt Nix: 3/4 (75%)
Knile Davis: 4/4 (100%)
Terrell Watson: 4/4 (100%)
James Conner: 3/4 (75%) 1 TD
Scott Orndoff: 3/3 (100%) 1 TD
Trey Williams: 1/2 (50%)
Brandon Brown-Dukes: 1/2 (50%)
JuJu Smith-Schuster: 0/1 (0%)

Drops

Jesse James: 2
Antonio Brown: 1
Darrius Heyward-Bey: 1
Roosevelt Nix: 1

Interceptions

L.J. Fort: 1
Bud Dupree: 1

Final Thoughts

– Josh Dobbs had a strong day Monday, going 12/16 (two incompletions were drops) but his low completion percentage shows some of the problems he had the first two days of camp.

– Life of a 4th string quarterback. Bart Houston with 20 fewer attempts than the next closest QB.

– Steelers getting a long look at what they have in Knile Davis, who has 11 more carries than the next closest back. Though to be fair, James Conner would’ve closed that margin had he practiced Monday.

– Justin Hunter has caught a touchdown on 44.4% of his receptions. Not a huge surprise, I said repeatedly he would have a good camp but still, impressive.

– Antonio Brown’s catch percentage is shockingly low. Compare his 43.8 to what he did all last camp, 74.6%. You can credit a lot of that to Artie Burns’ improved coverage. No touchdowns either. Had 16 of those last camp.

– Jesse James with two drops. Gotta clean that up and be the reliable target for Ben Roethlisberger.

– Marcus Tucker sporting a healthy catch percentage. Best of any wide receiver.

Gotta be said, Ayers with 75% catch ratio. Not too bad. There's some scoring in there too... Wonder who was throwing to him and under what circumstances (padded / non padded) those plays were made. It's only 8 plays and 6 catches. He needs more work. But still. I do like the kid. It's just - how do you keep them all?

And SF,

and Bell will be back in two weeks.
Are we sure? He can always hold out. And he hasn't exactly demonstrated that he's a team-first kind of guy. He hasn't even communicated with folks. That's the worst of it. At least he could say something about protecting himself from injury. As injury prone as he is we certainly don't want him getting hurt in the pre-season.

The hope was that Davis or Conner would be more than capable as the No. 2 and even No. 3 back. That would leave no need for DW and they could get rid of Fitz who really hasn't shown anything.

Bell is working out in Miami, so when he will be back is a unknown. Buttttttttttt knowing he needs some reps in before the season. I can see him back midway into preseason. I strongly don't feel he will hold out. Not like he can get a long term contract now..........
