Report: Steelers' Villanueva may skip training camp
Arun Srinivasan Jul 18, 2017 1:11 PM
Pittsburgh Steelers offensive tackle Alejandro Villanueva may elect to skip training camp as he's yet to sign his exclusive rights free-agent tender, according to the Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Villanueva received the tender from the Steelers, which would pay him $615,000 for the upcoming season.

Since Villanueva has yet to sign the tender, he's not required to attend training camp. Villanueva signed a waiver, protecting him against injury, which allowed him to attend organized team activities (OTAs) and voluntary workouts.

"After taking orders my whole life, now I'm working with a really good agent," Villanueva told the Post-Gazette in June. "I'll do whatever he tells me to do."

Villanueva's agent, Jason Bernstein, did not comment on the story when contacted by the Post-Gazette.

Under terms of the tender, Villanueva would rank 109th in salary for offensive tackles this season, a figure that doesn't come close to matching his on-field value. In any event, Villanueva is under team control through the 2017 season and is a restricted free agent in 2018.

Geez, that's actually offensive. pun NOT intended.

. The Steelers have extended Villanueva the $615,000 exclusive-rights tender, but Villanueva thinks a starting left tackle is worth more than that and hasn’t signed.

I have to agree with him, and if he sits out some preseason games, less chance of people falling on his knees/ankles and losing him for the season

If the reports of $12M+ a year was offered to LB are somewhat accurate and the FO is dickering over a couple hundred thousand to a model player on and off the field on the OL has me scratching my head. Got to keep the players in the trenches happy and secure.

I bet Villanueva wasn't gonna get an offer until the Bell situation hadn't ended. So now is that we might see movement in that front

Seems like there could be a compromise.

Give him a raise but he won't get what he could get on the open market and especially if Hawkins stays healthy and continues to impress like he did last year before he got injured.

Mrs. Burgundy just dropped big coin on a Villanueva jersey and will not be happy about this.

Given how players train now, I couldn't care less if they skip training camp, they'll be ready to go. I've heard a lot about Hawkins being the next left tackle and people seemed to have the guy penciled in. Maybe he'll be good, but he hasn't taken an NFL snap. Villanueva is a proven commodity and has earned a pay raise. I don't think he's a break-the-bank tackle, but deserves more than than his current contract calls for. Signing him to a new deal would be the right thing to do at this point, IMO.

The better get Big Al paid. He deserves to get paid

to me a guy who signs a waiver just to be in camp, isn't going to hold out

he just doesn't seem the hold out type of guy.

6,5m per year, come on colbert just make it happen

From what I know he can't even report to camp unless a deal is worked out or he signs his exclusive rights free agent tag. He had to sign waivers just to participate in mini camp and OTAs. I think that ends now. He's pretty much in a bad spot. If he holds out he will never get out of control by the Steelers unless they would withdraw their offer.

Up his pay. 4 years 4.8mill per, with 8mill guaranteed. He will bite.

Salute the nation

I agree that he deserves to get paid. I love the story and he is extremely solid. A total theft. Hed be minimum 2nd rounder in hindsight. That said, many military men are students of history. He better read his Steelers history. This team does not respond well to hold outs.
