Secondary

there will be 4-5 starters and a few backups

They will lead the league in passes defended because the opposition will always be playing from behind.

I think about 10 yards off the LOS on 3rd and 1 until I see otherwise.

Obviously our above the neck preparation and below the neck physicality at this juncture should lead to winning football if you will and we will take an all hands on deck approach back at the lab known as training camp with our players of pedigree, if you will, obviously.

They should be better than last year. As rookies, Burns and Davis did pretty damn well and now they get another off season. **** is not a bad #2.

While the end result was not ideal, the D was in the top 10 in a lot of defensive categories. I think one of those was sacks and we replaced Matthews and Jones with people who should be better, which will make our secondary better.

That is so last season. Couldn't resist. I think they have to use a 4-4-4 defence.

I hope so last season we were shaky but I still got faith in them

So shaky they go do went to the AFC Championship.

NO last year was defined about one team standing in the way.

This year with a little long term injury free luck they can push that team out of the way.

If we can get pressure on the QB our secondary will be a lot better this year. We also need to determine who we are and play to our strengths.

What this defense really needs to do is get interceptions. They can give up some yards and points. The front seven needs to get pressure and the back end needs to get picks. When this team wins the turnover battle they dominate.

So how do you guys think our secondary go do this season

A bit better. Burns and Davis should be better in year #2, and hopefully, Sutton can play the slot. If not it will be a declining William Gay and slot defense will remain an issue.

The pass rush should be a little better too.

One thing is for certain, the soft zone crap isn't working vs the better QBs. The Coaches needs to change their philosophy, in particular, Kevin Butler and Mike Tomlin.

correct, you can't play zone only nor man only. With so many young players it takes time, even cockrell is young so with added experience this D can play both man/cover or a mix of both (which would be ideal) like the D did when Taylor took care of his man on an island giving Polamalu freedom to do his thing while the other safety helped covered the other WR + TE

And ultimately you need pressure up front. If you can go man with pressure getting home followed by disguised zone you can beat Brady. If you dont get home quickly he will kill you on the crosser and the quick hook and slides all day.

last few years the steelers have been subpar at both pass rush and coverage. They have the same problem in both areas. Good players but no impact players. They get some rush but nothing offenses have to worry about. Nobody has to be doubled so RBs are free to pick up a blitzer.

Same in the secondary. The coverage is OK but a good Qb can pick them apart.

This year they may finally have impact players. Dupree has flashed and Watt has great upside. Same with Burns and Davis and now they add Sutton and possibly Golson. They have LBs that can win one on one battles and DBs that can play man. They haven't had that in years.

If you combine that with what should be an explosive offense, this defense should be good enough for a Super Bowl run.

But let's get real. The real question is, can this defense slow the Pats enough so the Steeler offense can win the game? For the first time in years, they answer could be Yes.

The steelers problem vas the Pats is that they have always relied upon pass rush to stop the pass. The Pats have built an offense that is almost immune to pass rush. Yes, you do have to pressur Brady but the teams that beat him have also been able to play tight coverage to take away those quick throws and make Brady hold the ball.

People think Brady is perfect but the fact is that when he feels pressure, his stats go down just like everybody else. In some cases, even moreson because he's not very mobile. The trick is that Brady is so quick with his reads that you can't get pressure unless his hot reads are covered.

Steelers may finally have the athletes in the secondary to so that.

Agreed. The teams that do well like Seattle
They cover, win battles up front. You cant play zone that is obvious. The blitzes have to be well timed. Atlanta played near perfect in the SB in the first half. I still think they caught on to something in the third quarter. Suddenly they couldnt stop them.

It's called ERNIE and previous taped and synchronized to sideline signal study. Combine that with additional helmet speaker time and anything stolen from opponent locker room.

Is Golson gonna play this year? He didn't tear his ACL tying his shoes, did he?
