For weeks now, Walter and I have had the Steelers taking Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer in the first round of our 2017 NFL Mock Drafts. Weeks ago, sources told us that the Steelers were high on Kizer.

In the final days before the draft, WalterFootball.com has learned from team sources that Steelers have been asking around to other teams, trying to gauge where Kizer could be drafted and who could be interested in taking him. Pittsburgh has to start planning for the retirement of Ben Roethlisberger and it sounds as though Kizer is viewed as their developmental starter in waiting while Roethlisberger finishes out his career.

There are scouts around the league who feel that Kizer has the best skill set and most athletic upside of any quarterback in the 2017 NFL Draft. He had an inconsistent junior season, as he completed 59 percent of his passes for 2,925 yards with 26 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He also ran for seven touchdowns. His completion percentage was thrown off by playing a game in the midst of Hurricane Matthew and his receivers consistently dropping well-thrown passes. Kizer played better as a sophomore when he had more talent around him like a top-25 wide receiver in Will Fuller), a top-10 pick at left tackle in Ronnie Stanley, a second-round center in Nick Martin, and a third-round running back in C.J. Prosise. In 2015, Kizer completed 63 percent of his passes for 2,884 yards with 21 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He picked up 520 yards with 10 scores on the ground.

The Steelers have tried to be discrete with their vetting of Kizer with offensive coordinator Todd Haley at the Notre Dame pro day rather than a big contingent of general manager, head coach, and other top executives. However, teams have told WalterFootball.com that Pittsburgh has revealed some nerves about Kizer not getting to their pick as they've asked around the league where he might go and what teams are interested in taking him.

Kizer (6-4, 233) is almost identical in size to Roethlisberger (6-4, 240) with both possessing a strong arm to go with mobility and athleticism in a big body. The Steelers could develop Kizer behind Roethlisberger for a year or two before turning the reigns over. Roethlisberger started talking about retirement at the end of the 2016 season, so Pittsburgh wants to be proactive about securing the future of the most important position on the team. They want to hit the ground running with their new quarterback and not miss out on prime years of great offensive weapons like Le'Veon Bell and Antonio Brown, who could lead Pittsburgh to the Super Bowl. After falling short in the AFC Championship Game last year, the Steelers have a talented roster without a lot of starting positions open for competition. Thus, they can afford to use a first-round pick on a quarterback of the future similar to how Green Bay selected Aaron Rodgers during the final years of Brett Favre's Packer career. In speaking to league sources, it sounds like Kizer is the player that Steelers are targeting in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Sounds tantalizing 2 or 3 years from now to have a transition into a "developed" quarterback.
Biggest issue is we are ready to win now with the QB and talent we have. These rookies could help reach that goal this year or next.
Also doesn't even account for the fact Kizer might be a bust anyway.

No thanks anyone who believes verbally that they will be the greatest without taking a snap is doomed. Guarentee

I think the only way we draft a 1st round QB in the next 2-3 years is if something tragic happens and Ben misses 10+ games. We just never suck enough to be in the top half of the draft. Almost a curse to never be worse than 8-8.

If we traded down and Kizer was there at our second rd 2 pick (#30), then yeah, maybe.

I personally think all the interest in QB's is smoke screen to trade down with someone and pick up an extra pick or two.

I might move Kizer up high on the Steelers board if he's available in round 2 (pick #62).

I have always hated Mahomes tape and don't want anything to do with him. I pray he is selected way before we ever pick just to get my mind at rest.

That means the only QB I would take at pick #30 is Trubinsky
The only QB's I would take at #62 are Watson and Kizer
That's it.
I would possibly take Davis or Kaaya or Peterson with our late 4th round selection but to me they are no better/worse than what we have with Landry Jones. You just get a cheaper option for 2 years and maybe roll the roulette wheel again to hit a jackpot (but to me it is unlikely).

I would literally boycott the season if they WASTED their first round pick on a player destined to be a 2-3 year back up player. He will contributed NOTHING to Ben's final years.

I want one of the top 3 tight ends.

We do not need to draft a QB in this QB-weak class, get one next year.

Just what I want, a borderline first-round quarterback who doesn't elevate the talent around him at 1.30 in a draft rich with defensive talent. Hope this is just a smokescreen.

Ain't no smokescreens at #30. I said in another thread, the Steelers really like at least on of the QBs, don't be surprised if they draft one.

Colbert's comments yesterday were telling (or chilling, depending on your vantage point) that all great teams have a transition in place at QB. He cited Montana > Steve Young and Farve > Rogers. He said teams that don't ensure their next-gen QB is in firmly in place face years of losing trying to get back to the top. I don't know if it's Kizer, I don't even know if it's this year, but my sense is Colbert is keenly aware he needs to have a plan in place in the near future regarding finding someone for Ben to hand the baton off to.

I haven't watched much QB tape this year, I guess this is a good time as ever. ;)

Well he runs a helluva better then Ben does.

I don't think GB had a transition plan "in place". Rodgers fell further than anyone thought he would and they decided "**** yeah".

No to Kizer.

No,no, please do not draft Kizer or Watson in the first or even the second round.
I don't thing either of these guys is the answer unless you want Tomlin fired in a few years. They won't win with either.
The QB I like is Davis Webb out of Cal. Big, strong, strong arm, intelligent and a film room junkie. The kid loves the game first and for most. Take him the second round and let him learn behind Ben for a couple seasons. That way you take your defensive guy in round one.
I hope the **** Tomlin doesn't **** this up.

unless they know something about Ben that is not public knowledge, pass

I'd still say no... I don't care if Ben announced his retirement tomorrow...I STILL don't want any of these QB's in the 1st round. No...freaking...way...

...none of them are legit 1st round material.

He seems to be full of himself. He said he's Tom Brady's brain in Cam Newton's body and then got mad when people wrote articles pointing out how conceited that sounds. WHen you read his full quote, it's even worse. He thinks he's going to be the greatest ever.

Confidence is great but it bothers me that he lost so many games. Sure they lost some guys to the NFL but he still had more talent that his opponent in most games and came up short too often.

His Brady/Newton quote reminds me of this scene
