Exactly one year after drug ban, Martavis Bryant awaits reinstatement
Martavis Bryant is now eligible to return from his one-year suspension, but the league office has yet to reinstate him.
Bryant applied for reinstatement on January 28, and the league has 60 days from that point to render a decision, meaning Bryant should know his future by the end of March at the latest. Bryant still has not met with Roger Goodell -- a requirement prior to reinstatement -- however, so it is likely the NFL plans to use most if not all of those 60 days. All accounts suggest Bryant has done what he needs to do to get back in the league, but his availability cannot be taken for granted until he is officially reinstated.
Bryant's suspension pushed his rookie contract one year back, through the end of the 2018 season. If he is reinstated, he'll make $690,000 in 2017. The contract is not an issue unless he puts up a big year in 2017 -- if he does, the Steelers would have to decide whether to give him a big extension given his suspension history.
By most accounts, Bryant has been in a good place mentally and chemically. That should be enough for reinstatement. After that, it's up to him. There's little doubt Bryant could come back in the spring, perform well in offseason workouts and training camp, and earn his spot back.
