Dear Santa:

Steelers have some money this year for the first time in what seems like a decade. 2 positions on defense need to be addressed so please, please bring in one of:

CB Stephon Gilmore or OLB Melvin Ingram

Both are young and fill a serious need. Both become the best at the position immediately.

Please make this happen and then address the other position in round 1 the draft.

If they want to be a serious contender they almost have to, can't expect Harrison to be able to play 16 games at his age, and he's a huge liability in coverage, and we can't expect 3 rookies to start and contribute again.

They have far less money than people think and I believe they would rather bring Timmons back than sign a free agent.
We have a lot of players that need long-term deals as well, Bell, Brown, Tuit, Villanueva, Cockrell, etc...

Those 3 rookies are now 3 second year players. And we should get a full season out of Bud Dupree.

Agreed, but who plays opposite Burns? Gay and Cockrell are slow and would have trouble staying with NEs quick WR's. If Dupree is our only legit pass rusher, they double and chip him.
Not many years left with Ben, if there are guys in free agency that can fill those holes, they need to spend some cash and get them, it's not their style, but it should be now.

If they choose to spend the money on Timmons, who clearly has lost a step and is on the downside of his career, versus a player entering his prime who can fill an immediate need then the GM should be fired.

You don't manage a team on sentimental value. Best example of that is New England - and look at their results. They don't hold onto players for a season or two too long. They don't put up with player antics. They trade some of their better players at the end of a contract to free up cap space to replace them with cheaper and younger. And they win.

With Heyward back, it will make it tougher to stop our LBs.

You know he is not saying spend $10m+/year on Timmons, right? Fact is we do not have another ILB on the roster who is as good as the lost-a-step Timmons. Williams has shown to be a good back up and should get better, but he ain't there yet. Ditch Timmons and you have another depth issue.

Sure, if Timmons will come back at a reasonable number. I'm saying you don't keep Timmons at the same salary cap level he received this year. If you can keep him at a greatly reduced rate then keeping Timmons doesn't prevent you from signing an impact free agent. If Timmons wants $8-10 mill again this year then you have to let him walk.

Don't care who take as long as we fill a couple holes.
Ingram/Gilmore are a pipe dream. Now, they could be had if we restructured some deals.
We just don't operate that way.

IRT to Timmons; the guy played fantastic this year and I want him back. He is only what -30?
However, I don't spend > 4mil per season on him.

This is what I feel happens in Free Agency.

Steelers Franchise Bell. 12 Million
Steeler Ink Debo to a 1.5 million dollar deal
Steelers Ink Timmons 3 year 12 million dollar deal (4 million in cap room)
Steelers Ink Landry Jones (yes I know I don't want it either but I think they do) 2 year 4 million dollar deal (2 mill cap room)
Steelers ink Ricardo Matthews 1 year 600k deal
Steelers RFA Cockrell at the 1.3 level

After draft picks that leaves them with 11-12 million to fill a few holes.

I think if left untagged the Steelers would go after Nick Perry from the packers. He's a rotational OLB/DE whom fits the 34 system. He's going on 28 so still have 3-4 good years but 2 prime years. I feel he isn't worth a tag and I am not sure the Pack pony up what he wants and lets him test free agency. He's probably a 5 year 50 million dollar pay day kinda guy but we could swing that especially if we don't keep Bell tagged and ink him long term. But I don't think Bell gets what he wants so the Steelers just tag him for the season.

Next "splash" is a cheaper one and I feel a guy like Bradley McDougald from Tampa fits our system. Plays the run, has a little ball skills, does a good job getting his hand up and breaking up the pass. And is 26 and best football is ahead of him. I think he's a 5 year 25 million kind of signing.

And the last not so big splash would be Terrelle Pryor... Yep I said it. He probably is out with the Browns with their youth movement and I feel Pryor wants to WIN and he's not going to do that with the Browns and didn't with the Raiders. He's 6-4 233 and still runs in the 4.5 range. He is coming off a thousand yard season with RG3, Kody Kessler and I even think Luke Bryan was throwing him passes at one point. (haha not serious) I feel for a 5 year 20 million dollar deal he'd ink with us and would finally give us a true #2 and size guy opposite Brown.

Love Timmons, and he played great, but he is a spot we need to upgrade, he is bad in coverage, plays great when he's attacking and playing down hill, but this is a passing league now.

They need a pass rusher first before a CB. I'd like a big physical CB. But the aging of Harrison. The mediocrity of Moats and Jones. They need another Dupree

Timmons has both Vince Williams and Matakevich behind him. Vince is great against the run and decent against the pass. Besides, Shazier is pretty good against the pass himself

Pryor will get a Big payday, no way he signs for 4M avg, more like the double of that.

Same goes for Perry, 10M avg would be a hometown kind of discount. He's one of the few young proven, available OLB/De. He's getting a bit more than that, you can count on the jags or another bottom capper to make it happen

Pryor will be 28 next year and is still unproven. 4 million a year for a guy who probably has never made more than 2 million a year is a nice chunk of money. Not saying someone might offer him more but it's just as likely someone offers him less.

Perry had a monster year... in his contract year. Giving 10 million a season for a guy who prior to this year never had more than 3 sacks and still is not an every down player as he had 603 snaps and by comparison James Harrison had 587 is a risky prospect. I feel his lack of snaps, one year wonder, and the fact he is behind Ingram, Jones, and Pierre-Paul in this class of pass rushers. Anything can happen I mean Ingram and Paul could both ink long term deals and Jones could be tagged and then Perry would be the top free agent out there. But this is all speculative so I decided to go with whom I thought would fit and whom would be reasonably priced.

I agree...I wouldn't sign Bell long-term at this point. Franchise him this season until you can him a full slate of games and comfortable he's clean. I'm not sold on Timmons. Love him and would keep him but nothing over $4M. I would actually cut Ladarius Green....you get a $2.6M in cap savings with pre 1 June cut and save $5M post 1 June. Don't gamble with concussions, he's just a hit away from retirement and you can't just put him on the field once he hits protocol.

Over the Cap has the Steelers with $35M of space but Bell and Timmons alone will eat half of that amount.....rookie pool, Exclusive Rights FA Villanueva, Finney and Boswell deserve money so yeah, 11-12M to get a name or two here.

Well we have three options:
1-we hope Brady gets hurt
2-we hope Denver gets a competent QB and they beat NE.
3-we try to build our team to beat NE.

The Browns have what $95M of cap room next season....they better sign him. They have no one else worth big money. If you're a FA that's just looking for a payday and easy money...go to Cleveland. I wouldn't be surprised if Jarvis Jones or Timmons end up a Brown.

we'll sign Bell and Brown to deals this off-season and all this extra money will be cut in half.

They apparently have already opened talks with Brown, so my guess is they intend to sign him this offseason.

There really isn't a whole lot at OLB or CB in free agency. My guess is the Steelers might try to sign a couple still productive
older type veterans for depth, who want a shot at a ring.

Bouchette said they are interested in signing Brown, but if his price is to high, they'll look to move him.

A new deal for Brown wouldn't affect this coming seasons cap. He already has a big cap hit and the structure would be increasing through the length of the contract

options 1 and 2 are our best bets
by the time we try to build a team to be able to beat the pats, ben will be retired
