There is no disputing his talent. But he's very much the same look at me type of guy, with off the field issues, and a history of not being there when we need him in the playoffs.

Bell has not been " paid " yet, but once he does will he become a Brown like distraction?

Using the franchise tag for 2017 for a running back costs about $12 million per year, not including a signing bonus.

As a free agent, the Steelers can not trade him. They will sign him, but for how long of a deal?

My fear is that we do sign him long term and Tomlin runs him lame in a couple years. Running backs don't normally last but so many carries, that's why other teams use multiple backs in rotation instead of getting all their productive use rolled into a couple seasons.

It would be stupid to give him a long term deal, with his suspension and weed past, and he's yet to start and finish an entire season.

tag him. force him to sign a team friendly deal based on injury and failed drug testes. tag him again next year if he doesnt take the deal

Option 1 is not really an option. We can tag him, and then we can work on a long term deal. There is no "one year franchise tag deal with incentives and a sign on bonus". The franchise tag is a set determined pay at the average of the top 5 at his position. There is no option for incentives or sign on bonus.

I'd tag him. The Steelers have all the leverage.

What ever you do you DON'T sign him to long term. 2 or 3 years MAX. Failed drug test Claus & injury relief of some kind. PAY him a good number with recouperable money if he fails drug testing any time.

PS some sort of deduction if he keeps his "RAP" career intact
Salute the nation

The best all around running back in the NFL you keep him as long as you can.

And therein lies the problem. We are not sure how long his body will hold up, or if he'll get suspended again.

We are not sure how he will act and behave once he get's paid.

That's why I say 1 year franchise tag.

Franchise tag and see if he can put in a full 16 game season. If he can put in a full 16 game season and he stays out of trouble then he gets paid. If he can't then you go to the draft and find a new RB. I would hope RB is a position of emphasis this draft anyways with Williams hitting 34 and being as fragile as he is. Toussaint is not someone I want on my roster.

Tag him and negotiate 4 or 5 year contract. Contract will have to have stipulations that protect Steelers
from further suspensions and injury. Backs that run fro 1500 yards and catch 80 passes aren't replaceable.

He is very very young for wear out to happen... that cliff is in the 29 to 30 year range. he turns 25 in a few days. a 5 year contract is perfect... load it with an annual contract bonus for not being suspended.

The counterpoint is he's also very young to have two season-ending knee injuries and two suspensions.

Just so everyone has context, Coach was leading the charge on the "our offense doesn't lose anything with DeAngelo Williams instead of Bell" bandwagon.

Deangello is done... legs way too old now

HUH? Did you watch him start the season for us? He's not done, He's a great #2, who can start and do well, but not a long term solution.

I would sign him to a long term incentive driven deal. If he gets suspended or injured then he doesn't hit the incentives. I get that it will have to be good enough for him to actually sign it, but the other alternative for him is to be franchised for the next 2 years.

We can tag him two years in row if need be. Tag him this year, see if he stays healthy and out of trouble. If he has more issues we can tag him a second year and look for his replacement then.
