Coach Gildong, Coach Tomlin, Coach Porter

if these stories are true then it is no wonder why this team lacks leadership in key situations. Being anti-social is one thing, but Tomlin not stepping in when Poter is being disruptive and that bullshit with smoking cigars is inexcusable.

Maybe the problem is that we have some young money coaches.

The buck starts and stops with the head coach, very simple really.

FWIW, my CWNC sources saying that the criticism of Porter is accurate/fair, but that Tomlin has never been an issue.

Final take on Tomlin/Porter. My sources say Tomlin=totally normal, Porter=acted like a JA, often. Trust my sources. "Contest" that if u wish

Was gonna say, the article made the afternoon show on 93.7.

Ah. P*ts chugger and Steeler hater. If true it is sad for professionals to behave this way, but he closes the article bashing the Steelers loss to the Cheatriots as a snub. The whole point of his story was, "I am a suck dick for the P*ts and want to write a story to bash the Steelers". He can, like all the others, go and suck it.

I like how some poster(s) always says "if true" . You or I weren't there and neither you or I can use our own personal testimonial. Many whom have been there (watching ball games) have stated what was written about both coaches. Even if this was only about Peezy then why didn't CMT step in and quiet the matter. Regardless usually it isn't as bad as it sounds but also not as good as it sounds either. LET's just pick the middle of the story, would that make the behavior acceptable??? HELL NO. It would still make that behavior unacceptable.

For one thing, outside of the Steelers property, HEAD COACH MICHAEL VINCENT LOMBARDI TOMLIN has no authority over Porter. None. I would say, unless there was physical violence it would be incorrect for anyone other than team officials or the league officials to do anything. When I have seen parents behave like ******** and other parents try to step in to 'help' the league officials, it only escalates the problem.

However, once back on the Steeler property, I would expect Tomlin to explain to Porter that, regardless of where he is or when it is, he is a representative of the team, should know better and stop behaving like an *******. If not, you will be fired. This discussion may or may not have occurred.

We don't have a timeline on when these things occurred to see if there was some change in Porter's behavior.

My local sources tell me no. Also that Gildong was fired for 1) acting like a ******* himself and 2) for his inability to control Porter.

Maybe not authority but he should have influence. If my boss walked into a bar where i was drinking, i'd sure watch my behavior. I bet most would. It says a lot to me that Porter has no problem acting a fool in front of his boss. It says that he thinks his boss will not have a problem with it.

Does anybody think Joey would act a fool if Dan or Art Rooney happened to be there to catch a game at their alma mater? I doubt it. And if he did, i bet it would have been the last time.

the greater point here is that part of the steelers problem is that they have too many guys who aren't serious. They are selfish and ruled by emotion. I do think that in the last few drafts, the steelers seem to have gone back to looking for charcter guys. Guys who don't just want to play, but want to win.

I think Shazier, Heyward, and Tuitt fit that mold.

one of the only good things at the end of pats loss was the shot of Artie Burns sitting, alone, angry, on the bench and he slammed his helmet in the ground. I loved that. It showed me a guy who is pissed he lost. A guy who thinks they should have won. We need more of tyat and less posing after routine plays.

I agree with this. I also think you get this with the offensive line and from a guy like Timmons.

This was my thinking too. If it is true, it really is horrible and further validates what people think of professional athletes. However, the timing of this coming out is curiously peculiar. When, exactly, did all this stuff take place? Why was there seemingly no mention of it until now? I'm not saying that there's no way that it's not true, nor am I going to defend anyone's actions, but these last two weeks have been nothing but "pile on the Steelers and everyone involved."

High school football here ends in early November unless you're in the playoffs.

Timmons doesn't seem to be vocal and that's another issue. The guys i mentioned Shazier, Heyward, Tuitt, and probably a few others may be dedicated to winning and want a more professional attitude but they don't seem to be vocal. Loudmouths like Mitchell seem to have more sway in the locker room.

Once guys like HInes and Bettis and Ryan Clark left, there has been a void. Ben never had to be a leader until recently. He had those guys as leaders. I don't think he knows how. He has this passive aggressive thing going on so he may make a cryptic statement to the press but not actually address the problem directly.

I was watching a bunch of the 30 minute Super Bowl highlight shows that ran all weekend. One thing that stood out to me was how far the quality of football in general has fallen off in the NFL. They showed the Raiders vs Vikes and focused on how the Raiders ran right at hall of famers Carl Eller and Jim Marshall. They had Art Shell and Gene Upshaw and a good FB so they ran straight at the Vikes strength and beat their *****.

Today, the modern OC would not even attempt such a thing. Actually scheming to block somebody? That's just crazy. No, you have to come up with a way to fool the defense every play.

That was a running theme in the earlier SB games. The focus was perfect execution with good schemes mixed in there as well. Larry Csonka is gettintg the ball. **** You defense. Try to Stop it.

The other thing that stood out was Steeler related with the game vs the Seahawks. It was obvious how tight knit that team was. Ben was a rookie, but he had Maddox and Batch right there reassuring him after his INT. Hines was there. Bettis was there encouraging Parker.

The offense was struggling and Cowher called for a reverse which got a first down and got the offense moving for the first time. Later it was Cowher who called for a gadget and they unleashed the Randle El TD pass to Ward.

You could feel the whole team, players and coaches were involved and on the same page.

This steeler team seems more segmented. A bunch of cliques.

The team is on cruise control. Somebody needs to take the wheel.

I think Heyward has a voice in the locker room, or at least it seems that way with how he talks to the media. However, you are right on about the others. Tuitt just seems to be waiting until it is his time to step up as a vocal leader and your description of Ben being "passive aggressive" is absolutely perfect. Then again, what matter is it if your leaders are speaking up in the locker room if their teammates (especially star teammates) aren't paying the least bit of attention.

I don't need my boss to be there to not act a fool...but, to state the obvious, neither of us is Porter. Seems to me, Porter has an issue that Tomlin may have had some influence in, but I will go back to what I said. "When other people have tried to step in to "help", it never has." As a former teammate, I would have expected Gildong to have plenty of influence and that, clearly, did not affect Porter's actions.

Again, I would expect that Tomlin spoke with Porter afterwards where his words would actually carry weight and within the confines of the employee-employer relationship. Do you not give a guy a second chance or just fire him on the spot? People bitched at me because I refused to watch while fuckhead was on the team. That behavior deserves a second chance, but yelling at officials doesn't? We don't know what, if anything, that Tomlin said behind closed doors. Nor do I see anything in the story about a timeline about behavior changing somewhere along the line. Maybe it did, maybe it didn't. Someone says that "according to his sources..."

Since the article also included Tomlin in some of the poor behavior and we have another report saying he never was, which do you believe? If the article was wrong on that, maybe it was shaded a bit elsewhere too?

"I'm not about to try and quench Joey's competitive fire. That's one of his emblematic characteristics, and one of the things that make him so valuable to this team as a leader of men.", Tomlin said.

Tomlin was asked how Porter's attitude translates to success on the field.

"Probably the best testimony is the play of the young linebackers. He's got them playing, in certain moments, almost as good as grandpa Harrison. Plus, it's contagious across the whole defense, whether it's Mitchell making intimidating hits in the open field, and almost making the tackle, to Ross making the extra effort to secure the face mask. I let Todd know that we need more of that on the offensive side of the ball. I mean, we love it when our players celebrate a first down, but wouldn't it be great if our O linemen started dropping the mic after a successful block? Obviously we have work to do, and Joey is key to that effort."

You can take a person out of Newport News but you can't take Newport News out of the person.

Tomlin's always been sketchy. Results count and I'm not the moral table pounding kind of fan, but I know Joey Porter is a terrible human being. Not sure about Tomlin but my guess is he's not quite what I consider upstanding either. Average character at best.

Not really all that surprising. Tomlin seems to be more like one of the guys than a coach. However you would think the rooneys would be aware of these incidents since one is on the board. I can't picture them being too fond of stuff like this. Either way Porter should be gone. As for tomlin i would like to hear him actually discuss some X's and O's because I really question his actual coaching ability. I do not think the talent we have is living up to results on the field and that starts with coaching.

This interview with Deebo always stuck in my mind, though the comments are quick.

I can't help but wonder if this would have come out sooner if white people weren't so reluctant about being the ones to complain about the misbehaving black men at an otherwise all white event.

When you compare what we have to the clowns in Cincinnati, I'd cry too....

Marvin Lewis has always put his job and protecting his relationship as a yes-man to Mike Brown over his players. You NEVER hear stories about how much the players love Marvin unless they are criminals and he's the only coach that gave him a shot, which is a Mike Brown decision anyway. That organization flat out lies and uses players like meat.

For the most part, I respect how the Steelers handle players. I didn't like how Faneca ended (particularly in comparison that off-season to Aaron Smith and Joey Porter), but for the most part, they've been solid. I know it's a tough business and I know you can't make everyone happy, but my impression of the Steelers front office is they are pretty up front with what they think of you. I hear different things about Tomlin on that issue, but he's better than Marvin Lewis.

Not saying I disagree with anything you've said. Really, the clip was in reference to Tomlin just being "one of the guys," since that's what Deebo had to say about him.

I know it runs late in PA. My old man hails from Tarentum, and we try to make it out there on a fairly regular basis. However, it's still been a ****** up two weeks for the Steelers. Players, coaches, and everyone alike. At the end of the high school season, the Steelers were in the middle of a four game swoon.

With the Rooney family connection to the Catholic community, Archdiocese of Pittsburgh and the Catholic educational institutions I find it fascinating Steigerwalds observations have gone no further than the Indiana publication.
Dan Rooney was a standout QB at North Catholic and graduated from Duquesne. Where is the outrage?

Not quite sure what you mean by the Newport News quote but thought a little better of you. I grew up about 20 mi. from Pitts. and retired to about 50 mi from the Norfolk area 20 yrs ago. Proud of my roots but find Norfolk to be a very diverse with a heavy active and retired military population. Can tell you Tomlin is highly respected from what I have seen and maintains contacts with youth groups. When you are questioning a persons character might be better not to guess.
