Steelers vs. Ravens: With Coates out of practice, Ayers is in

PITTSBURGH -- Sammie Coates' hamstring injury has ensured that Demarcus Ayers is set for his debut in the Pittsburgh Steelers' Christmas Day clash with the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, Ayers said.

He took Coates' reps as the "Z" receiver in Pittsburgh's offense and has his own packages in the team's game plan for the 4:30 p.m. potential AFC North decider, he said.

Ayers was signed to the practice squad after failing to make the 53-man roster out of training camp and promoted to the active roster on Dec. 12.

Prior to the injury he said he had a chance to play on special teams, but Coates hurting his hamstring early in Thursday's practice sealed the rookie playing his first NFL regular season game. Coates did not practice Friday, Ayers said.

Ayers was selected in the seventh round of this year's Draft, 229th overall out of Houston, and took punt returns in addition to playing primarily in the slot during training camp.

Darrius Heyward-Bey has played the position for the Steelers. He returned to practice from a mid-foot injury this week yet only worked on special teams and scout team offense, Ayers said.

When Ayers moved outside in Thursday's practice, he said, it was the first time he played wideout since training camp. And if Antonio Brown or Eli Rogers need a rest, he can also fill in their spots, he said -- but he's able to play all the receiver positions.

On Sunday, with a playoff berth on the line, he will play at least one.

And I, for one, would be happy to see you get your wish!!

Edit: As long as it came with a Steelers' win. Ayers gets a TD, but the Steelers lose is a no go for me .. lol

that is why I said a TD in a Steelers win....would much rather Ayers under perform in a win than Ayers shock the world and the Steelers lose....

Man, I sure didn't see the part about "a Steelers victory". Must be the Knob Creek. (Which, I've found tonight, is a very smooth "sipping" bourbon ... maybe too smooth. lol)

Merry Christmas to All, and for the ratbirds an ending season goodnight.

The article wasn't totally clear on it, but Ayers was inactive for the Bengals game. Obviously that changes on Sunday.

He'll be No. 15.

I can not recall the last Steeler to wear 15 in a game.

bullshit

you don't sip bourbon, down the hatches and all that !

Assuming he gets a hat, will he be returning kickoffs?

Surely he couldn't be worse than "Fitzy" and whoever else has been back there this year.

But his strength is punt returns. Would seem like a strange time to replace Brown, though. We'll have to see.

Me neither.....hopefully we can all remember number 15 from now on. Ayers and the rest of the team need to step up. We have injuries in key positions everyone needs to step up.

Doing shots of Jack with my son before the game to make up for this grievous error on my part! lol

congrats Coolie yinz boy came thru and helped us ........

I got the feeling that Tomlin gamed confidence in him as the game went on. He played quite a bit in the fourth quarter.

I wouldn't be surprised if he gets some touches as a punt returner next week.

If he breaks one, which he's very capable of doing, the Steelers will have that spot filled and won't have to risk Brown back there anymore.

I saw that on a Facebook group page devoted to University of Houston sports (primarily football).

Some guys just look like football players. He does. He's no Dri Archer or Chris Rainey. He'll line up wide, he'll run routes over the middle, he'll block. He'll do whatever is asked of him.

He'll be in th league a long time.

Congrats on your boy, Coolie! He came through when we needed him.

That boy is fast.... he doesn't even have to catch passes to take the top off a Defense and open up room for Brown.

His ceiling is high.

He played a big role in the 4th quarter. First, he was on the field so the Stillers brass trusted him enough for that.

Second, he was open on the PI bomb, and the defender grabbed him because he had been cooked.

Third, he shoves the defender away like a ***** after his catch-and-run out of bounds, saving a timeout. Yeah, how big was that??
