Contracts that expire on defense for 2017

I hear you Ark. $14M was a number Coach used, and I'd pay that if it's the Franchise value for RBs, but it will probably be closer to $12M. I pay that in a heartbeat to retain Bell for a year. If it's long term, I agree it should be closer to $10-11M per season. bonuses could take it higher, and I'd be fine with that as well. A 4-5 year contract is all Ben has left. Brown's contract should reflect that timing as well.

couldn't agree more

Cope.

Re-signing Bell is risky business. Two knee injuries, and two suspensions in his career.

Bell hasn't been as good this year. He has fumbled more ( 4 times, he leads the NFL ) and only scored 4 times.

Bell is a chain mover type with limited big play ability. While he catches the ball well, his 8.0 yards per catch is middle of the pack among RB's. 12 other Running back players have a higher YPC average at running back.

The reason he's catching it often this year is because Bryant, Wheaton, and Bey are out, and Coates who if iffy on catching has injured fingers. And James is average at best at TE.

Bell's 4.5 yards per rush is decent, but 12 other running backs have better.

So he's 12th in yards per rush and 13th yard per catch. Yeah, yeah yeah, be is flexible in deployment, but I'm not seeing elite level franchise type of numbers, are you?

All this with Ben and a good OL.

Is Bell worth 12-15 million a year to you? Not for me. I'm okay letting him go as long as we can sign the best free agent pass rusher or DB. Or I'm okay keeping him for 8 million a year for 3 years with contract clauses on suspensions. Let's not get caught with another Woodley!

in fact Bell is 9th in yards per carry, (at least 99 carries) . Source http://www.nfl.com/stats/categorystats?seasonType=REG&d-447263-n=1&d-447263-o=2&d-447263-p=1&statisticPositionCategory=RUNNING_BACK&d-447263-s=RUSHING_AVERAGE_YARDS&tabSeq=1&season=2016&Submit=Go&experience=&archive=false&conference=null&qualified=true

for yards per catch I counted only about 5 who are above his 8.0 average that have more than 40 catches, Bell has 63 (missing 4 games)

but the sum of both stats plus the workload he can carry shows you he is top 3 in the business. There's no denying this

Sorry Coach you sign Bell. If you want to put some weed stipulations in the contract maybe do that.

But players who top level produce you keep, unless they are too problematic.Bell isn't to that point.

The goal is to strengthen weaker positions not weaken positions of strength.

I am a little worried about what Bell is going to ask for.
However, I would like to come out of the FA period with AB, LB and a mid-tier OLB signed.
A guy like Jabal Sheard would be ideal IMO.

We could use money that doesn't apply to the Salary Cap to hire some people to follow Martavis around, 24/7, with a cattle prod. Buzz him every time he is about to do something stupid.

What batteries do you propose the Steelers use?

But seriously I think Bryant is the most talented player in terms of raw ability and his production when he plays means an extra 6.5 points on average to the team.

Is 9th in the NFL out of 32 starting backs with 99 carries is worth 12-15 million a year?

Liked I said he's fumble prone this year, and hits few big plays. And he has not scored many touchdowns.

Bell is great chain mover type, but one with off the field and past injury issues.

I do not think he be as productive on average NFL team. Our line, Ben, and AB open things up for Bell.

You have to hedge on this risk and remember how very replaceable the RB position is. He might ask for 12-15 million a year, I say nice to know you and will use the money elsewhere.

But if he signs for 8 million a year with come incentives and off the field clauses, welcome back. We don't want another Lamar Woodley, a very good player who took his money they got lazy.

Cockrell need resigned but NOT for to big of a deal. Kind of designers to in years 3 & 4 the steelers can cut without to much comittment. Timmons, a 2 year deal but friendly is a must. DEBO I want back another year but it looks like retirement it's in his mind. Pay him what it takes for a 1 yr deal. Uncle Jarvis needs to pursue his life's work, just NOT here. AS said, our "D" needs offseason attention and MORE that just through the draft.

Salute the nation

**** has become a solid corner and still growing. **** doesn't always play soft. He is often hard and fits nicely with Gay. ****, Burns, Gay is a nice trio.

Yes, 12 to 15 is a hell of a lot but 8M won't do it either as he knows he'd make that withe fmthe franchise tag. So we offer him a long term 10M avg and if he doesn't like it then tag his ***

For the first part, I think you can ignore they yards per rush and, instead, look at yards per touch and/or ypg. I think ypg is less instructive as it might be skewed by him taking more touches than other players.

If anyone cares, this has yards from scrimmage per game and per rush/pass. Bell is first is ypg. Doesn't show yards per touch, though or the number of touches.

As for fumbles, Bell isn't even in the top 25. unsurprisingly, the most fumbles come from QB's. Elliot has 4 fumbles, too, btw.

Looking at those above Bell in the ypc stat, the ypt is, pretty comparable. Withing .4 yards.

That $15m drop of Timmons cap hit is nice to see. I hope he resigns for a reasonable deal. I like Williams, but IMO, he still isn't as good as LT.

Yes a Ramon Foster kind of deal would be great. Vet presence that wants to retire a Steeler

I'm going to be tremendously simplistic here about your numbers, you already have enough threads about using data to fit your opinion.

Bell is 9th on this list. His numbers posted elsewhere indicated he is leading in yards from scrimmage ( a product of TPG). These achievements versus the other 31 starting RBs, but while missing the first 4 games. Most evaluators say he is 1 or 2 RB in the league due to his all purpose ability (run/catch/block). The last player like that in our era, Marshall Faulk, a HOF. Yeah I would hold on to Bell. How much does it cost? His market value. Rooneys will pay market value on players. Ben, Bettis, Ward, Polamalu, Porter, Faneca, to name a few.

If you say he's a great chain mover, I'll take a chain mover every time over a 1 in 5 or 1 in 10 splash playmaker. Chain movers kills the clock, score points, keeps the defense off the field.

You want to say he has off the field issues. He has the same amount as James Harrison (domestic battery) which occurred several years ago.

Injury history? Yes he's had 2 knee injuries, cause by fluke circumstances, but as Cope explained, they were not structurally severe and he has recovered nicely.

You think he wouldn't be productive on another team? It's possible, but considering he's part of this team's primary game plan, I doubt it. Elliott wouldn't be nearly as successful as he is behind SF O-line.

He's worth the tag amount and more. The circumstances about his suspension can be worked out contractually. They always are. NE isn't paying Hernandez anything, and I don't believe Gregory is getting paid while on the exempt list.

Something will get done to keep both AB and Bell and possibly make a splash for a pass rusher FA in the off season. He won't be a super star, but he will be like a Farrior or Greene.

Another point about Leveon Bell ... he is a superb blocker. Yes, he missed Vernon on one block last week, but that is notable only because it happens so rarely.

Dude flat-out stones blitzing LB'ers several times per game. He is fun to watch blocking for Ben, as his blocks involve him smashing into the rusher and not trying to cut him and hope for the best.

Coach, reposting your points without acknowledging the counterpoints, does not create a stronger argument.

Somehow I think other RB's have better yards from scrimmage averages. Where is this source? Also, Bell leads Running Backs on fumbles, we are not takling about QB's

STOP. Rooney pays value to proven players who aren't suspended 2x and have been on IR for 2 seasons.

If you say he's a great chain mover, I'll take a chain mover every time over a 1 in 5 or 1 in 10 splash playmaker. Chain movers kills the clock, score points, keeps the defense off the field.

We've got some chain movers on this team. What we need is more explosiveness. With the emergence of Green, and the WR's hopefully getting healthy Bell's safety valve catches will diminish I think.

You want to say he has off the field issues. He has the same amount as James Harrison (domestic battery) which occurred several years ago.

Harrison has been in the league a lot longer and is at odds with Goodell.

i njury history? Yes he's had 2 knee injuries, cause by fluke circumstances, but as Cope explained, they were not structurally severe and he has recovered nicely.

2 knee injuries for a RB is not good. He has recovered nicely, but it will surprise no one if he gets hurt again.

You think he wouldn't be productive on another team? It's possible, but considering he's part of this team's primary game plan, I doubt it. Elliott wouldn't be nearly as successful as he is behind SF O-line.

Forget possible, its likley he would nto be as good on another team.

He's worth the tag amount and more. The circumstances about his suspension can be worked out contractually.

He's worth more than the tag. BS. The tag amount is too high when you weight in the risks. We all saw last year how easily he was replaced, did we not?

Something will get done to keep both AB and Bell and possibly make a splash for a pass rusher FA in the off season. He won't be a super star, but he will be like a Farrior or Greene.

If we give Bell tag money, or as you suggest more than that we won;t be able to make a splash to fix the defense. 8 million a year with clauses is about a high as I hope the Steelers go. 12-15 Million...way too risky and IMO he's not that good.

Go to NFL.com find the #rushes and rushing yards. Find # receptions and reception yards. Add them together and get the average. I tried to copy and paste to a spreadsheet to get the averages, but might have made a mistake somewhere. I only looked at those people with more ypr greater than Bell thinking those are the most likely to have better receiving ypc, too.

I did not see an avg stat anywhere. might be one at pro-football-reference or easier way to get the average, but, for some reason, that site is acting up for me.

Here ya go: RB with #touches and ypt. Top 12. Started with top 50 RB's. 8 of them had less than 6 receptions and are excluded. Using lookups to get # catches and ypc. Bell is 12th. Take out two with less than 50 touches, puts him at 10th. Probably less than 6 or 7 touches per game ought to be excluded, too.

BTW, NFL .com has Bell with 3 fumbles, I think it is 4 though. If four, he does, indeed lead RB's in fumbles. Oh, wait, he is tied with Elliot and Ivory with 4. Murray, McCoy and Johnson, Ware all have 3.

Notice anything else those RB's have in common? It's what happens when you focus on a stat, i.e. NUMBER of fumbles, without thinking it through. Looks to be around 6th in fumbles per rush at 1.67% (didn't add the receptions back in since already closed that spreadsheet without saving). Difference between 6th and 3rd is .3%. Difference beteween 6th and 15th is about .5%.

We still have 4 regular season games to play. Evaluate Bell's season when it's complete. Our 1 WR offense is
making him look rather valuable right now.

Here ya go: RB with #touches and ypt. Top 12. Started with top 50 RB's. 8 of them had less than 6 receptions and are excluded. Using lookups to get # catches and ypc. Bell is 12th. This list isn't complete. Sproles has 73 rushes and 45 catches at 4.6 per rush and 8.6 per catch ( both are higher than Bell ). With Sproles Bell's 13th in the NFL. My hunch is there are other non-starters that you can add to the list besdies Sproles.

13th in the NFL does not equal franchise tag money. Other points, Bell hasn't scored much, and he's a fumble leader among RB's. And like I said before Bell plays on an easy team to shine on, with Ben and a fine OL.

The power struggle that git Donahue fired was between him and Cowher, why would they fire a GM because Cowher wanted more control, then bring in another GM and give the new GM more control? No way, the Coach has had the edge since then, unless the Rooney steps in.

He took Troy ******* Edwards over Kearse. I'm sorry, but I don't give a **** who you are, you **** up like that, and the coach goes to management, you're ******* gone. If he had made an awesome pick, it might be a different story, but he straight up undermined Cower on that, and he got what was coming to him. Look at the dynasty he built in buffaho.

Dude, you're out of your ******* gord. Bell is THE best all around back in the league right now. You've got a hard on for the guy for some reason, maybe his head is too ******* big, but there is no way that dude isn't worth whatever we can pay him as long as he stays away from the pipe.
